Netflix Streaming Coming To PS3 This Year

Netflix starts taking reservations for free disc-based streaming solution for PS3.

This lady is looking at discs.
This lady is looking at discs.
Sony and Netflix have announced plans to deliver Netflix's instant streaming service, which allows users to watch a gang of TV and movies over the Internet, to the PlayStation 3. The PS3 will gain support for the feature later this year, and in addition to a Netflix subscription, it will also require the use of disc-based software, which will launch the Netflix interface. Or, at least, it will "initially" require use of a disc, according to the released information, which makes it sound like the feature could be integrated directly into the PlayStation 3 at a later date.

Netflix is making the discs available for free to its members, and those wishing to get on the list for a disc as soon as they're available can do so now at www.netflix.com/ps3.

This levels the playing field a bit more between the PS3 and the Xbox 360, which has had built-in support for Netflix subscribers for quite awhile now. Of course, the key difference is that on the 360, you need a paid Xbox Live Gold account on top of your Netflix subscription, whereas it will be freely available on the PS3 to anyone with a PSN account and, you know, Internet access.

It sort of makes you wonder if Microsoft will blink and decide to move Netflix to the Silver side of the wall. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say naaah. Unless the PS3 absolutely catches fire and continues outselling the 360 month after month, Microsoft probably feels like it's in a fairly safe position. OK, that last sentence makes me feel like some sort of analyst-type guy. Like I'm wearing a suit. I've got to get out of these clothes before I turn into a computer!

Oh, and in a related story, I've spent the last several hours playing Uncharted 2 and DAMNTHATGAMEISGOOD.

I wonder how well netflix will stream via wi-fi. My PS3 wi-fi is super slow compared to the 360.

" I signed up for PS3 disc notification, even though I'll probably stick with the 360 for my Netflix needs until they properly integrate the service into the PS3 software.  I hope they have all the access that the 360 has, too.  I don't want to have to go to me PC to set up my streaming queue again.    Now how about some Hulu on either of these systems (and I don't mean the paid "PlayOn")? "

Netflix Press Release said:

" These titles are conveniently organized into a variety of categories based on members’ personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues."

Hope that addresses your access concern.

Regarding Hulu, PS3 had that for a long time until Hulu started blocking them (I believe there is a workaround). It would be nice if some partnership were formed, but it seems like Hulu wants to do their own thing for now.

Hmm I bet MS knew about this early on but didn't say anything so that's why they're pushing their own instant streaming service which I must admit the quality is much better than netflix's IMO, but it's way too pricey. At least now I can use netflix on both my Xbox ans PS3 so win win I guess.

@Kamasama:   The only workarounds that I know of are to pay for the PlayOn or premium TVersity programs.  Since Hulu is free on my PC, I don't understand why I have to pay for a program to stream it to my PS3.  It's not as if the take out the ads for those who do pay.  With Facebook, Last.fm and Twitter now on the 360, I hope somebody at either Microsoft or Sony talks to Hulu and reopens the service for streaming to consoles.

Sounds cool, although the whole disc based thing does not make any sense.  Also later this year? so November or December?

This...and Blu-ray on the Xbox...it's all leading to a New World Order! The world government will issue consoles produced by the amalgamation created when MicroSony became one via a giant merger. We'll all wait in 10-day-long lines to play the PlayStation 360. Scary times ahead! Paranoia! o_0

Hopefully this will be available in Canada as well. I saw you playing Uncharted 2 so much yesterday Jeff, I think you need to take more breaks. lol. (Though I beat Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 in one sitting yesterday so I shouldn't be saying anything)

Hopefully the increased userbase will help get a bigger selection of streamable movies. The current selection still sucks.

Oddly enough, earlier in the day prior to hearing this, John and I had just been talking about how we probably weren't interested in upgrading to a gold account for the 360 pretty much exclusively for the streaming Netflix ability. Now we'll get the ability without the upgrade-- already reserved our disc.

The gap between Sony and MS is almost at a close...what's going to win this console war is personal taste and exclusives...the features they both offer is almost on a level playing field.

Maybe I would give 2 shits, if there was any chance of this coming to Poland, or actually any chance of having any movies in the PSN or something...
Then again, the 360 doesn't even have Internet in Poland so...

@PenguinDust: This is the workaround I was referring to. Those other services you mentioned have open APIs, so I'm not even sure Microsoft had to talk to those companies. Hulu is certainly more closed with its content, and therefore not very comparable.

Uncharted 2 is great. Also, I would definitely use this service on the PS3 over the 360 considering Microsoft thinks we have to have a paid Gold Subscription on top of the Netflix subscription.

People keep saying that Sony has been leveling the playing field, but it seems to me that since the price drop anything that Sony does is absolutely tilting it in their favor.  The 360 is now so much more expensive to match feature-wise to the PS3, the only advantages it still has are certain games, if you like them, and some people feel the Live experience is still better, which I don't really, especially for $50 a year.

Paying for Gold was a necessary evil for years, while the $50 hurt every year, you felt that you got what you paid for considering the offerings on the other consoles.  While the Wii is still ridiculously weak in the area of online features, the PSN has come a long way since the initial launch, and is now arguably just as good as XBL.  Netflix has been mentioned a few times as the one thing XBL had that set it apart, but that is now going to be on both, making the difference between the two that much smaller.

MS is going to have to address this sooner or later, especially when times are tough, paying $50 to play online on top of buying the games isn't very attractive.  Either by making Gold cheaper or adding a sizeable amount of MS points to a Gold subscription as incentive.  The fact that the 360 is the only console without a web browser is baffling, a 360 version of IE is something I'd have expected at launch, but it's something that seems to never be discussed.

Also I DO hope Netflix capability becomes available for silver Live members because of this. My older 360 with the busted disc drive sits in the living room as a Netflix and arcade device, while my primary 360 remains in my room; and it's annoying having to make sure my profile is on the one in the living room and that I'm not logged-in in my room when somebody wants to watch Netflix. I'm certainly not going to get another gold account for that functionality.

Looking around here and on other sites (Kotaku, Joystiq) PS3 owners are singing the praises of this move.  It's definitely good for them. One of the most useful things on my 360 is streaming from Netflix for a very reasonable $9/mnth.  What gets me is that most of those PS3 fans previosuly discounted this same feature when it was a 360 exclusive, but now they're saying it's an absolutely fantastic feature and hailing it as the end of the console war and the true path to PS3 dominance.  I like it because more feature parity between the services will drive more innovation on the part of both MS and Sony to set themselves apart.  It's a win for everyone!

That's a really good feature for the PS3.  I really hope that it comes with a fully-functional interface for searching movies.  I'm thinking about getting a PS3 anyway, so I'd love to have the choice of the machine to watch it on.

I still think xbox live is still better and more user friendly than the PSN. So far Uncharted 2 is the only game that managed to streamline a lot of multiplayer problems and made it easier to play with friends, but I'm just used to pressing the guide button and sending a game invite or party invite on xbox live. Even though you can send invites through PSN, it's still not automatic, you have to join manually and ya I'm lazy so just blame MS for making a better streamlined service. At least PSN is adding features at a fast rate now.

I'm a PS3 fan that said that it was an unnecessary feature when it was an 360 exclusive, and i continue to say it's an unnecessary feature now that it's coming to the PS3. Convenient? Yes. Will i use it? Probably, but that still doesn't make it some awesome, must have feature. I currently say the same thing about Facebook and Twitter being integrated into the 360. Xbox owners try to tout these features as what makes the 360 "greater" then the PS3. I just laugh and roll my eyes at that. Especially considering that those features will show up on the PS3 eventually anyway.

It's funny, i have access to almost every game in existence, and all the above mentioned features, just by owning a PS3 and a PC. Most 360 exclusives come to the PC (for example, Peter Molyneux confirmed not long after release that Fable 2 will be coming to PC eventually). You'll never see Uncharted 2, or Killzone 2 on the PC, but you sure as hell can play Gears of War and Halo on the PC. I can also access Netflix, Facebook, and Twitter on my PC. The latter two i can access on my phone as well. I have access to more content with a PS3 and PC then i would if i had a 360 and a PC. Plus i don't have to worry about my PS3 or PC failing 50% of the time...

Great news for people who only have a PS3, but I'll stick to streaming it on my 360 so I don't need to use a disc.

Maybe if we keep hoping and praying, some day the PS3 will actually do something better than the 360, rather than something basically-as-good-if-you-don't-think-about-it-too-hard.

I agree with Jeff.  Uncharted 2 is a fucking good game.

Anyway, i don't know how much of a boon this will be.  I am sure that being a blu ray player is enough for people, and since there are blu ray players coming out with Netflix support, this just brings it up to par with everyone.  I think MS should make Netflix available to silver members, it would be a good move.  However, as many of us know, the PSN speed is much slower so how good the service will be is yet to be seen.  And with Microsoft showing off instant 1080p streaming, they already have a few ups on the PSN.
