New Duels Of The Planeswalkers Game Announced

Get those mana tapping thumbs ready.

Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers was a great CCG that experienced a decent amount of success over Xbox Live Arcade. So, it’s only natural that Wizards of the Coast followed it up with an expanded offering, right? Right. The publisher has plans to show off Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 at PAX East, a new game in the fledgling series that's set to hit XBLA, PSN, and PC via Steam on an unspecified date.

According to a Joystiq post, Duels 2012 will feature "new game modes, Planeswalker opponents, decks, and puzzle challenges." It’ll also feature another tutorial mode to teach people how to play Magic: The Gathering, which is a lot harder to do than you think.

This is from the original game, but I'd imagine elephants will be in the next one, too.

No word on price or specifically if the dudes behind the title will let you build your own decks of cards this time around, but I’d imagine we’ll learn all of this rather soon.

Even after playing the game for over 10 years, or maybe because of it, I have no interest in relearning the rules again.

I just wrapped up my S-Rank in this the night Dragon Age came out.  I'd buy this at launch, I got the original during a Deal of the Week, and it gave 15 dollars of value for sure.

I like how they didn't do the obvious, more mercenary path of having microtransactions for randomized boosters.  I don't find building decks in Magic very fun, I find playing the games themselves fun.  I'd rather play a game where the game designers work to balance the multiplayer than a game where whoever pays more has a competitive advantage.  Give me a FPS with balanced guns that everyone has access to over one where you buy unbalanced better guns from XBLA.

If I was going to give them a hint at making the game their own, make all the decks standard, and instead of handing out new cards for wins, hand out experience for every killing creatures, winning games, dealing damage... and then apply it to a kind of perk system that allows you to 'upgrade' cards in your deck, or maybe your starting hand size, or your starting life total.

... In response, I Bolt you for 3 damage.

Magic is alright, but I didn't bother with Duels of the Planeswalkers so I probably won't get around to this either unless it does something amazing.

Duels of the Planeswalkers was a pleasant surprise when it came out on XBLA. It was a pretty flushed out game, though the obvious addition of customizable decks would have been amazing, and actually got my friends and I back into playing Magic again for the first time in a long long time.

So basically, This is a day one buy for me.

Really happy with this news.  Playing the first Duel of the Planeswalkers on XBLA got me back into Magic (via Magic Online) after a ten year break.

I'm never jumping back into the physical game again. I got out just before they introduced Planeswalkers, and I can't say I'm too disappointed. I don't really like the mechanics of them.

Plus, I'm willing to bet that 99% of my cards are no longer legal in Standard tournaments, which means I have absolutely no will to buy again.

Although I do kind of want to see what that new Mirrodin set is about, because that was probably my favorite block (Scourge was definitely my favorite set).

Great news, I love the first one and there is alot of room for improvement.
Crashes, imbalance and a lack in personal control over your deck where minus points they can easily improve on.

This title really depends on the inclusion of a deck editor. It'll make or break this purchase.

I will buy this on steam if, and only if, they add a more customizable nature to the game. If they make it come with a booster set or two that you unlock packs of by playing, along with a a few basic decks (and perhaps new booster sets in dlc), then I will buy this day 1. Even if they just give you a certain amount of cards that you can mix and match yourself, I will probably buy it. Same restrictive game as the first comes out, and I will see no reason to purchase it at all.

I loved this game, and eagerly picked up all the expansions. But like others have said, the next game really needs an option to edit your decks.

Why not just make an expansion that adds all of the new features? I don't know if I'll be buying again. Its the difference between an iPad 1 and 2 if you ask me. Deck editor and I'm in! (unfortunately).

@Fattony12000: Isn't that set out of Standard now? I'm pretty sure they're only going to want the most recent couple blocks in the game.

I really want them to let you build your own decks. I would play Magic Online still if it just had an interface like Duels of the Planeswalkers. An iPad version could be great too.

I had a lot of fun playing with friends, but if they don't figure out how to have a deck editor in there I won't even bother with the sequel.

Seriously if I'm not going to have a say in trying to keep my deck at 60 or taking out cards I don't want from the beginning then this thing is probably going to get ignored.

And please for the love of god let me tap my own fucking land...

Cool.  Hopefully they'll have at least a greater level of deck customization this time around, if not a full-on deck builder.

I wonder if they'll have an announcement for expansion 4 soon to coincide with this sequel announcement.

@Fattony12000: I think they'll probably stick to standard, if not just because 2010, 2011, and 2012 has a lot of the stuff you'd want from older blocks, and is more available. Especially for the new player who goes, "but I like this card!".

I really wanted to enjoy Duels of the Plainswalkers, but too much of the fun of Magic is missing by not being able to construct your own decks.  I'd pay $60 for a modern day remake of the old Micropose Magic: The Gathering games.  Just give me all the cards and let me play the computer.

I'm pretty stoked for this. While I would like to build my own deck, I'd be happy with premade decks and just a bit more customization over the XBLA DotP. Even if it's the same format, though, I'll be picking this up. I'd rather have a decent, balanced game of Magic with premade decks than some of the slaughters I've seen during my younger tournament days.

The original was fine for what it was, but if I can't recreate my decks and stress-test them against hundreds of players online, then I'm not sure if I really want to pony up the cash again.

I wouldn't expect them to let you completely create your own decks ever. That's not what this product is being made for.

Hell, they said in an interview (I think I read it on G4's site) that they're adding the new arch enemy mode   but when asked if a player could play as the arch enemy, their response was to the effect of "players aren't good enough to be the arch enemy" (for those unfamiliar, Archenemy is basically one player is the Archenemy and has an extra deck that does some crazy stuff, and is playing vs up to 3 people generally. Really it seems like they just looked at the wow tcg raid decks and decided to do that but the boss player plays any deck they want with this extra side deck, where as in WoW the raid boss has their own specific deck to play. For the physical game you would buy the Archenemy deck separate from other cards) but when asked if a player could play as the arch enemy, their response was to the effect of "players aren't good enough to be the arch enemy".

I find it interesting that they would throw the Archenemy mode into it but it sounds like they still aren't going to be adding the planeswalker card type that was introduced a year or two ago.

While I don't see them letting you play with decks completely of your own creation it would be nice if you could take cards out of the core deck so you can stick with a 60 card deck. Playing with like 95 card deck is just dumb. It would also be nice if you could tap your own mana. There are definitely situations where the auto tapping screws things up because it taps something that you need to be able to cast another card in your hand.

Another thing that kinda annoys me about this game is in that interview I mentioned above, the guy said basically that they understand that their player base is a mix of new players and guys (like me) that have been playing the game for almost 20 years, which even if they do realize it, this game is not really made with that older player in mind at all.

Really when it comes down to it, they want this to be a gateway drug to Magic Online which is going to always hinder the depth that's allowed for this game. Realistically I'm guessing a lot of it comes from Wizards of the Coast and not the developer itself.

All that said, given it's price, I still feel it's worth it for what you get a nice distraction. Not necessarily the best representation of magic, but still not bad overall. I'm interested to see what they do with the next iteration.

One thing that sucks though is that the new version of the game is not going to be compatible with the old version, however they are looking at what they can do to reward owners of the original game. However it's basically the same game (with the same problems), just with the new multiplayer mode (Archenemy) and a few new decks, then I'll be passing.

My most played game of this last year might have a challenger then! I still don't have the 100% achievement though so I've got more games to play as we wait for the sequel.
