New Gran Turismo 5 Patch Adds Car Damage To Online Mode

They add because they care.

Now you can wreck your car like a pro in Gran Turismo 5's online races. The game's third patch was released last night, adding in support for mechanical damage when you're racing against other humans.

After you grab the 149MB patch, you'll be able to pick from three tiers of possible destruction, ranging from low to high. According to Ars, this heaviest damage setting still isn't as nasty as you might think it could be. Vicious wrecks into walls at high speeds won't crumple an engine or throw a wheel spinning into the air, but this damage modeling still does a good job of confirming that, yes, when you hit solid things in a car, stuff will break.

This car is just asking for it.
This car is just asking for it.

The catch here is that this patch adds damage exclusively to online play. It does not add a damage toggle to Arcade or GT Life modes. But yeah, here's your damage modeling you've been asking for. Try to play nice!

@rm082e: Most corporations don't get sued by the U.S. DoJ and 20 state governments, along with the EU. Microsoft was.

Fuck that. Gte it used at any Gamestop for $17.99.
Wouldn't taxes bring that above 20? "
Not if you have one of their club cards dealios. Then it's 10% off. Basically no tax.
I think $2 extra is worth not having to leave your house, spending time driving there, wasting fossil fuels, and then having to give money to Gamestop. "
So...you'd rather give $2 to microsoft instead? You're really going to paint Gamestop as the big, evil corporation when Microsoft has been convicted of violating anti-trust regulations, numerous times? Gamestop just makes extra money by circumventing developer fees. Last time I checked, that wasn't breaking both federal and international regulations in order to force other companies out of business.  Plus, downloading generally takes longer, and uses up bandwidth. And, you just have to sit there and wait while it downloads. At least with Gamestop you're doing something in between playing (i.e. driving fo realz). "
So you'd rather drive for 30 minutes, give a different corporate entity your money, deal with dumb-ass employees that seem to be the gold standard of GS, and all the while cut the developer out of the money for the game you're playing, that they put the hard work into, and give it to Gamestop instead?  Don't act all holier than thou just because you shop at a GS.  Both methods are certainly viable.  TL:DR:  Stop being a dick "
Sorry you didn't read my post correctly. I said nowhere in my post that GameStop was either more or less valid than Games On Demand. I was simply saying that Microsoft is at least as shady as GameStop, if not more so, thus invalidating the idea that buying things from GameStop is somehow less moral than using Games On Demand.

My point is that GameStop is no less viable than Games On Demand. I fail to see how that's being a dick.

I've also had nothing but pleasant experiences with the employees at GameStop. Everyone I've met is quite competent, and I've enjoyed every recommendation I've gotten from them. Maybe it's just where you live.

Oh not this again. Well, I'm not exactly driving 30 minutes. More like 5 minutes. I don't even deal with the employees. I just simply say no to their pre-order suggestions.

And I don't know how many times I have to mention that the developer already got their money for that game that I'm buying used. You guys swear that people are getting ripped off here (well besides the person that sold it, but that's their loss).  The used game market has been going on since video games came out. Now that the developers are complaining that there's people out there that have the patience to save a few bucks instead of buying it day one, everyone else jumps on the band wagon. No one is losing money. There are no developers and publishers literally closing down shop because of the used game market.

I understand that Gamestop is a corporate giant that everyone loves to hate because they make $3 billion a year off of dumb asses that don't know anything about craigslist or eBay. However, I don't give a damn. I feed off of those dumb asses.

Gamestop has taxes applied to it, though, so I'd rather pay less than 2 dollars to not have to put the disc in.

MS isn't any more evil than any other company. They're just more successful and therefore more publicized. All major corporations are beholden to their bottom lines and they all get sued.

Games On Demand does not take longer unless you live next door to a GameStop. With a decent connection you can get a game in 30 minutes. I just bought Gears of War from the store last week and it took around 20. And with the 360, you don't just have to sit there and stare at a progress bar, you can go do other stuff while your game downloads. If you jump into a game it will just pause your download and pick it back up later without any command from the user. It is far more convenient than driving to a GameStop.

You also never have to worry about buying a scratched game that may or may not play, in a box that's covered in yellow price-tags that are a total bitch to peel off.

I agree with that. Let's look at it this way. Would you rather have the download that is stuck to that hard drive or would you rather have a boxed copy that you can use on any console? I know you can transfer the games over, but apparently that costs money and you would have to wait for the game to transfer over. It's pretty much not worth it.

Wait, so...people are going to play with collision/damage in mp races?

If so I may have to drop money on a console and this game.  Any race game I've ever played people always turn collision off altogether making it essentially a real time exchange of time trial scores (pointless).

Unfortunately this doesn't stop the Jerk racers they just think its more fun now they are damaging your car and wrecking your chance of ever winning, same in every car game ever unfortunately.
I'm pretty pumped about trying it out though, my buddy has it and playing it totally got me back into Forza.

Moral of the story is dont buy second hand consoles that yellow light months later, that way you could buy the games you want whenever you want

Just read the ars thing.  For those who want a real driving experience, the fact that you cant fuck up your transmission when downshifting from redlining is seriously dumb, I don't know how they just forget to include this.
