New Grand Theft Auto in 2009?

Rumors start flying about a new GTA by the end of the year. I vote for Neo-Tokyo.

Yes. Sold. LA looks exactly like Tokyo in the future.
Yes. Sold. LA looks exactly like Tokyo in the future.
** Update**: Be sure to check out the newest Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, coming exclusively to the Xbox 360 October 29, 2009. It'll include both The Lost & Damned as well as the newer Ballad of Gay Tony.

There's plenty of of Grand Theft Auto content on the horizon with The Lost and Damned and China Town Wars, but how about a whole new game and location for the series? Rumors are flying about the next big installment in the series coming as early as the end of 2009. The newest issue of Game Informer apparently contains the following vague snippet between its pages:

We're not talking about new DLC or a collection of previously available DLC, we're talking about a full retail game. We expect this title to follow the suit of previous GTAs and use a subtitle such as GTA: San Andreas, etc. Tokyo might be a possible setting for the game, but details are non-existent at this time.

I personally haven't seen the issue, so I can't vouch for its validity or put it into more context, but if they're talking about a new GTA IV-style game, color me excited. Tokyo would be a great choice, though I wonder what time period would be best. Maybe it's time for Grand Theft Auto to head into the future so we can start having sex with prostitute replicants and throw them out of our hovercars to get our creds back.

Thanks to PSU for the tip.

End of this year seems waaaay too soon. But I'd be excited if it were Tokyo.

That said, they should just concentrate on finishing LA Noire.

Tokyo is meh, but i wouldn't mind. I'd rather have something like Chicago in the 20's and 30's with Al Capone having a small hand in the plot or London in the 60's like one of the older GTA's. But Blade Runner tokyo would be a bit ridiculous, regular tokyo i think would be more likely a pick for Rockstar

I wasn't very satisfied by GTA IV, and the downloadable content doesn't look worth any price.  The game was fun, and I certainly enjoying playing through to the end.  The multiplayer modes were boring, dare I say.  Amidst all the impressive graphics and realism, the game lost something that previous installments had.  GTA III was called a "Mafioso Masterpiece" -- it was truly epic and didn't take itself too seriously.  Successive games added to and, in some aspects, improved upon that.

GTA IV does not have a "spirit" I'd like to see added to.  I would rather wait two more years for Rockstar to rethink what makes a Grand Theft Auto game fun (hint: it doesn't involve slippery vehicle controls) than see an oversaturation of the franchise to appease the "gamers" who list their favorite games as "Halo, Madden, Guitar Hero..."

The thing that really irks me about GTA 4 is that there are VERY specific ways the developers want you to do certain things, which is often detrimental to the user experience, or I should say, detrimental to the sandbox style of gameplay I've come to enjoy from GTA games.

For example, in one of the earlier missions you have to run into a store, chase some dude through the back exit, and then complete a scripted car chase. I failed the first time, and upon going back and trying again, I figured I'd tamper with his vechile before entering the store. This is GTA right? Do things any way you want, right? I shot out his tires, and failed the mission instantly because the guy "got scared". Right.

So I go back and take about 5 cars, park them all in front of the guy's car, and try again. As we exit the building, all of the cars I blocked him in with have mysteriously vanished. This is a technique that worked in GTA3, which in subsequent games has been removed in favour of a more defined, scripted experience. In GTA3, it really felt like you could do anything you could come up with, and made you feel as though you were outsmarting the game. GTA4's insistance on giving you a scripted experience totaly ruins those moments of player ingenuity and experimentation.

I'd like to see a new GTA game set in either Tokyo, London, Chicago or maybe Las Vegas. Also, I didn't like GTA4 too much because I thought it strayed away from the sandbox style that made GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas so good, the story was a bit of an improvement in GTA4 but it felt like much was missing from the other GTA games, like bicycles, skill training, planes and other things too.

They released vice city exactly one year after GTA3, and i thougt that one was much better.  But then again they really just changed a lot of technical stuff and made the game more playable.  If this is true, I really want to see how it turns out.

"I've been saying that for years. GTA: Blade Runner would be the greatest game ever made."

Agreed, funny, I just watched Blade Runner again a day or so ago. GTA Blade Runner would fill my gaming needs for a long ass time. If only.

I'd love to see GTA going back to San Andreas and throwing all that wackyness back in though. SRSBUSINESS in 4 left me unfulfilled, and Saint's Row 2 just isn't the same.

I'm hoping for more games to be announced and released pretty close to each other this year. In my opinion it is a nice way of doing things.

I think they should set the next one in like Texas or Utah.

I'm serious. Basically make it like Full Throttle. Mixed with the movie Tremors (without the worms)

MAN, I JUST CAME UP WITH THAT. IS THAT AN AWESOME SETTING FOR A GAME OR WHAT? ROCKSTAR PM ME FOR DETAILS

A) If this were to happen, I am sure it would be delayed until at least early next year. At least they've got the groundwork for the game laid out in full, but I still find it hard to believe they would be able to toss out a meaty expansion this quickly.

B) I feel conflicted, because while I'd love to see a new, full game come out that quickly, I'd also like to see the DLC they've been hyping up since pre-release of GTA IV. I hope they don't plan on half-assing it; and while I believe they probably had the first, Xbox360 exclusive "episode" done or at least well into development some time ago, that one piece wasn't the only DLC promised, so I'd imagine they would have to devote at least a portion of their team to that sector.

Though I suppose that makes sense. What is essentially an expansion pack wouldn't take the whole team to develop; nor would a whole new game, were it to use their existing engine. And of course, it would.

Honestly, there's a whole laundry list of places it could be set or resemble. Although, I would seriously hope it isn't a GTA IV spin-off or sequel. Considering how oft-delayed IV was, the turnaround time to produce another retail game sometime this year seems improbable.

Of course, the printed statement pretty much contradicts itself, so this could all just be moot.

Develop a whole new GTA game within one year? Seems unlikely. Guess we'll see. Tokyo would be pretty cool, although I wouldn't mind another Vice City or San Andreas either. Or Blade Runner.

I think the only places they can go are either Tokyo, Chicago, or some futuristic Blade Runner-esque city.  Rome or Paris would be fun to explore, but would there be much to do there story wise?? Either way, as I'll buy any future GTA game so long as it is as awesome as 4 is.

I'd rather have London first... driving with GTA4 vehicle physics would be pretty sick in Tokyo though if the roads in the PGR games are any evidence.

They're definitely going to visit the US south again, probably on a larger scale than in San Andreas, and also not as west-coasty. Expect to see Houston and Atlanta variants. Probably not next, but it'll happen eventually. I just hope the Housers actually visit the south and put a little more variety in the characters instead of strictly rednecks again.

Also, GTA isn't likely ever going to leave the United States. It happened in the expansion for GTA1 back before the Housers got a hold of it. They're very much into satirizing the USA.

And it is completely possible to build a "new" GTA in a year. The reason there was such a long gap between San Andreas and GTA4 was because they started over from mostly scratch designing and instancing the engine and fundamentals of the game. Vice City came out a year after GTA3 because it was built on GTA3, where all the real time was spent. You think world artist Aaron Garbut is actually working on Chinatown Wars or the GTA4 episodes?

EDIT: I agree with Elwinster 100 percent. Where's the sandbox aspect?

I really beat GTA4 last year but now since trophies are available its made me go back to GTA4 again. I doubt a new GTA game is coming out in 2009 maybe announced but not coming out until 2010. If its just using the GTA4 engine then count me out of getting the next GTA game unless its based on a city thats fun. I could see Rockstar maybe redoing Vice City like they did with GTA4 basicing it off real life New York City. I would love to see San Andreas redone if thats a possibility. I have a feeling that the next GTA game will be based off Washing, D.C.

I motion for Western Europe, condensed in the GTA fashion. Imagine having all of those historical sites to cap at people in and out of, Colliseum, Parthenon, the Acropolis, Tower of London, Big Ben, I can go on but it would be quite the list. Instead of a bunch of meaningless buildings, there could be dozens of significant sights. That would be sick!

I hate to point this out Mate. But GTA is Made by a UK studio....  you're playing with British humor already.

Dismissing another country because you think that the GTA1 expansion was bad aint exactly logical. However I can see an argument for them to return to Vice city, Washington DC doesn't make so much sense, or Atlanta. So far the GTA series has stuck with common stereotypes of the US from a British perspective those cities aren't as well known over here for much. Sanfansisco however is a different story. That could be pretty awesome.

I'm not too hopeful for the Future Tokyo scenario, it doesn't seem to fit with the darker more serious tone they seem to be taking.
