NFL Sunday Ticket's Sloppy, Frustrating Debut on PlayStation 3

The experience only underscored the problem of media partnerships and the confusing blame game.

This should have been what my TV looked like on Sunday morning. Instead, it was an error screen.
This should have been what my TV looked like on Sunday morning. Instead, it was an error screen.

Let's get the opening arguments out of the way regarding NFL Sunday Ticket. Yep, it's $340. While technically it's $85 a month paid out over four months, you're tied to a contract, so it's still $340. If you're a football fan cheering for an out-of-state team, there's no way to watch all of the games. If you're a good team, maybe a handful will be broadcast during the day or featured in the primetime Sunday and Monday time slots. Maybe. Your alternative is heading to a bar that's showing everything.

That's me and the Chicago Bears. Walking to a bar most Sundays and racking up a food 'n drink tab with my fiancee will add up quick, well more than $85 per month. So while this whole thing is basically a racket, it's a racket I have to participate in one way or the other, so I'll happily go the route that allows me to pick up the necessary football materials at Costco.

When NFL Sunday Ticket works, it's brilliant, letting you quickly tab between different games.
When NFL Sunday Ticket works, it's brilliant, letting you quickly tab between different games.

I pulled the trigger on Saturday afternoon. Knowing Brian Urlacher would be on my TV the next morning felt damn good. There was no anxiety over getting a viewable seat next to the TV or bargaining with the people around you to get the TVs switched around. Beer, coffee, football, couch.

It all went downhill in the morning. Bears were scheduled to play the Falcons at 10:00 a.m. PST, with Sunday Ticket recommending turning on the feed about 15 minutes before game. The moment the application opens, however, it's clear things have gone wrong. An advertisement keeps looping, then freezing, then crashing. The stream tries to connect again--and fails. Switching over to any stream doesn't fix the issue. Wondering if it's just me, I turn to Twitter to see a shit storm brewing.

"Our team is aware of this issue and working to resolve as soon as possible," said DirecTV's customer service account. A variation on that statement had been posted dozens and dozens of time, with no ETA on a solution in sight.

First field goal comes up. Good as Gould! First Beardown! First quarter winds down. First half finishes. Second half starts. Fumbles happen. There are, of course, more touchdowns--even one by Urlacher! Stream still broken. And then it's game over.

Functional service didn't come online until the second set of games, but at that point, the primary reason I'd purchased NFL Sunday Ticket had disappeared. Further complicating matters, it wasn't clear who we (as in paying customers) should be directing questions to. The incident exposed the delicate dance platform holders must play when partnering with media companies where it holds little sway over the service and cannot do anything when stuff goes horribly wrong.

Putting this here because I can't imagine another time when I'd have an excuse to post this.
Putting this here because I can't imagine another time when I'd have an excuse to post this.

Brad Nicholson, who previously wrote in this very section of Giant Bomb, kept asking for help over Twitter, and was told by DirecTV that he should be talking to Sony, even though NFL Sunday Ticket is a DirecTV service.

"Brad, if you bought the service through PSN and are not a DIRECTV customer, please contact Sony cc: @PlayStation."

Anyone who purchased NFL Sunday Ticket through PlayStation Network are being offered a $25 PSN voucher. You're not getting your money back, but you have money to spend on Sony services! Sony told me today it expects that voucher to be in people's accounts "in the next day or so."

When I asked for comment about the incident itself, Sony pointed me towards DirecTV.

So far, DirecTV has not responded to my request for comment.

The service ended up working perfectly the rest of the day, giving me exactly what I'd paid for--but after the Bears game was over and won. As grumpy as the whole ordeal made me, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. It's not like there are many options for me here. Hopefully, it was just a hiccup. If there's problems during Bears vs. Packers, there's hell to pay.

Not entirely surprised it didn't launch flawlessly. Except it should have, considering how much prospective users are expected to front. My Red Zone through Comcast was choppy for all the morning games and some afternoon ones. I'm willing to bed there was giant pent up demand for some football.

I figured Brian Urlacher would want to decapitate Jay Cutler for his piss poor quarterback play. Rodgers is just doing his job, and he's doing it very well...

That was directv that dropped the ball. I guarantee it. They screwed me out of $700 over two years with a bait and switch campaign. They had the nerve to call me and ask me to renew. I was livid to say the least.

Isn't an actual DirectTV subscription cheaper than that?

Nope. I have DirectTV and my package was around $60 per month for the first year and has been $114 per month for the second year. I get 250 channels with the HD option. A two year contract is required. This is all before the Sunday Ticket package is added in for I think around $175. Now there is a deal currently where if you're a first time customer, you can get Sunday Ticket for free this season but you (a) still need to subscribe to DirectTV for 2 years and (b) next year you will automatically be billed for Sunday Ticket at full price.

Sometimes satellite television can be as consumer-unfriendly as cell phone billing. Still, I am happy with my service and it's a damn sight better than what Dish Network gave me.

I'd be moderately curious about trying this, but it's expensive and since most american football games come on around 3 AM here, not too practically feasible.

I went to a three different bars to watch the morning games, and all three had problems with their Sunday Ticket feeds. It was definitely a Directv problem. If you think $340 is bad, how about those bars that pays thousands to Directv to get the games, only to have patrons walk out when the TVs don't work!

Welcome Xbox Live Sports Fans:

not related to the NFL sunday ticket thing, but this has been the text that greets me when I try to figure out if I can use ESPN on Xbox Live for the past year... I think they're lying about working on a fix for this.

So I guess Sony's pulling a makegood on this the way Valve did with From Dust, as in the problem has nothing to do with them but they gotta please people somehow.

Also, I only care about three NFL teams, the rest can go straight to hell, but watching that team in high-ass-definition would be great if I could do it. I even have Sundays off work, so it would be so great to buy an a la carte team package. Sadly, that actually makes sense, which means it won't happen.

If there are problems for you during Bears vs. Packers, they will likely be related to Aaron Rodgers being the best QB in the league and Cutler throwing 90 interceptions.

So at some point earlier in August, DirectTV originally stated that everyone was getting NFL Sunday Ticket for free. Then it was maybe new subscribers. Then it was $340 again all of a sudden. I've tuned out, I don't know, don't care. But it seems like Directtv has handled this whole thing terribly from a marketing standpoint. So this is just one more thing. It makes me sad, but in the end I'm really only interested in the market games anyway. I don't have that much time to watch football and I usually work Sunday.

Oh shit, that's not good. Jeff, I'm in pretty much the same boat as you except with hockey and $180 instead of $340. NHL GameCenter Live is pretty much the same service as the NFL Sunday Ticket and if one doesn't work, that doesn't bode very well for the other.

I just got a new Xbox and was really excited to see that ESPN3 came free with the Xbox Live service. That's great for college football (WAR EAGLE!), but unfortunately neither the NHL nor the NFL are signed on with the service, so instead I have to resort to paying exorbitant fees just to watch my games. I'd get the NFL Sunday Ticket as well, but first of all I couldn't afford the both of them and second of all I'm not nearly as invested in pro football as I am hockey.

...I don't really know where I was going with all that. I guess all I have to say is that I hope Sony gets their shit together before the hockey season starts.

The funny thing about this to me is that I've bought the Ticket for the past five years, but this year as tight as moneys been I called Direct TV and canceled it this year on Sunday morning but still had the ticket when I got home. I hate it for those who didn't see games but I liked getting the games for free especial since I already spend about two grand in premium service and UFC fights a year with Direct TV. I did hear that some bars lost their Direct TV feeds yesterday too, I don't know if there's any link. To answer one more thing, NFL Ticket on Direct TV is $340 or $56 a month for 6 months, but if you cry hardship and threaten to cancel, they'll knock it down to something like $230

$340 seems steep as hell.

Not really if you you are a big football fan. That's literally hundreds of hours of games to watch over the season, live in HD.

Apart from the hiccups, it looks better than my actual DirecTV presentation. The only other place you're going to get that is in a sports bar, so honestly if you want to watch the games, you're going to save money watching them at home.

Gettin' angry 'bout sports.

I can be just as big a football fan and watch 4-5 games a week for free, or I can pick which teams I want to watch play in two of those 4-5, and I can pay $85 a month for it.

I have quite a few friends that are NFL fans, and I also have a few friends that hate sports in general. Much like the fellow a page back, I don't understand where that fiery passion for their disdain of sports comes from. They show more enthusiasm in their hate than some of the most passionate sports fans do showing their love.

I'm not a fan of football but I can sympathize with the passion behind it. I'm a baseball man myself, the only reason I don't have MLB.TV is that I have a bandwidth cap that I don't want to exceed streaming all these non-home games. That's like 180 bucks, a bit pricey but no other way to see all the games...since you know, your local sports station will only show home team games of whatever sport it is you fancy. People pay 60 bucks for Xbox Live and however much on video games in general all year long, I'd say that passion is no different.

I lucked out. I bought it to watch the Redskins play and it started working about 3 minutes before kickoff. I was panicking and raging on twitter all morning like everyone else but it's amazing how easily I could forgive them once I was able to watch Sexy Rexy unleash the Rex Cannon all over the Giants. I will happily take their $25 credit and say all is good, but only if this never happens again.
