Nintendo 3DS Due In Japan By March 2011

New handheld to offer glasses-free 3D, backwards compatibility.

Nintendo of Japan has issued a brief press release confirming that it's working on its next handheld platform. Going by the working title of "Nintendo 3DS," the platform is scheduled to ship in Japan before March 2011.

Details on the platform are slim, as the release only states that it will offer 3D effects without the use of any sort of glasses and that it will be backwards compatible with existing DS software. More details will hit at this year's E3 in June.

It's nice to have the rumors get cleared up a little bit, but doesn't it seem strange to announce this before the DSi XL hits every territory? I mean, who's going to run out and buy an XL now that they know it'll be obsolete in around a year?

" I already passed over a DSi in anticipation of the XL.  I have no intention of skipping another year.  By the time this 3DS comes out, they'll just make a press release teasing a 3DS Lite.  Do you guys really want to buy a 3DS fat? "

Exactly, it makes no sense to wait another year, buy an XL now, and get a 3DS once it launches officially at Christmas next year - calling it.

Nintendo will always look to make their handhelds as small and ergonomic as possible from now on - the DS only became successful once they did.

You'll be waiting a very long time. Nintendo announcing a new handheld for Japan by March 2011, doesn't equate to it being released in the West in the same time frame, resulting in a loss of sales and a drop in price in all regions. The New 3DS handheld could arrive in the West in Q4 2011 - 2 years away....

Pick one up now.

" Yeah don't think anyone will be getting the XL anymore. Maybe old people. "

I really don't understand the idea some people have that the XL is only for old people.  I recently bought a bigger TV, and that had nothing to do with my vision.

The same as why I just bought a DS XL, I like to have bigger screens.  I'm not someone who plays it portably, so I don't need a smaller device to carry around and I'd argue that even younger gamers would probably like the XL more than the regular DSi, as it makes it much easier to watch what's happening on a friends screen.  You never tried to look over your friends shoulder while playing Pokemon on the Gameboy back in the day?

It is odd to see an announcement about this so soon, but it only cements the fact that the next Pokemon game will still be on the regular DS, so I'm happy enough to not bother upgrading to the new one for a while.  I'll probably wait for a year or two and a price drop or an inevitable redesign on that.

Goddamit. I sold my Lite in anticipation for an XL. I have been expecting a new DS announcement for a while, though. So I could wait over a year before playing any awesome DS games, or I could just get an XL now and whatever the new system is called later. Yeah, I think I will do that.

This doesn't make much sense either..  This isn't another revision to the DS, it's the successor, and will presumably have a lot more functions and new featuers that what they've briefly mentioned here.

You may as well be asking why anybody would buy ANOTHER playstation, when the PS4 is announced.  That's up to four!  And each one has been redesigned once..  Not counting the four versions of the PSP.

I've never had any real interest in the DS, although not being able to play the new pokemons disheartened me a little, but this does interest me. Let's see what the graphics are like though.

As far as backwards compability goes, the option to play games one generation back is the 1 thing I absolutely demand out of every new generation, at least for the first iteration of the hardware. That way you can still use your new system even for som older games, also useful if there are still coming out new good games for the older system.

But most important of all it will allow me to transfer my pokemon to newer games indefinetly.

If this is playable for me (i.e not causing the normal headaches and nosebleeds that I got from Avatar 3D), then I may upgrade to this. I'm still rocking my 'phat' DS from release day, which is fine in function, if now starting to fall apart. But it's been dropped a lot.

@Linkyshinks: 'fraid I've no clue as to what Shantae is, but anything for download would be neat.

And SoulSilver is doing plenty to keep my DSi mad-active. Just wish the camera would see some use. Christ, there's photographers in HG/SS that take pictures of you. You'd think they'd implement the camera into that...

Yet another Nintendo DS, Nintendo sure do love ripping their customers off. You'd think folks had learnt their lesson after the DSi.

It will be dude, the carts are said to be of the same size as current DS carts, according to developer leaks over the last couple of months. Nintendo will always see BC as a big deal to it's customers.

Could this be the awesome innovation of holding a DS 2 inches from your face, book style with a cardboard divider in the middle ? That would make things look 3D right ?

If this works even just a little, people playing this on the bus will never see the muggers coming...

Oh joy... Hopefully this 3D technology doesn't rely on being usable if you have two good eyes. I was born almost blind in my right eye so as of now no 3D technology works for me. Not to mention the last thing i want is dam 3D to take over my video games. I can live with missing out on a bunch of stupid action movies, but when i have to start skipping on games because of this stupid fad i get angry.

On a side note, has anyone figured out a good way in writing to differentiate between 3D that you see with glasses and polygonal 3D?

You realize there is perfectly functional technology for a three-dimensional image without the use of glasses? This is probably what Nintendo employs. It is not very popular as TV technology since it only works from 1-3 preset viewing angles, but for a handheld it should work just fine.

You're almost surely out of luck on the 3D thing, as it has and probably always will require a pair of eyes. That said, I would be flat-out shocked if the 3d can't be turned off. 3d causes motion sickness for quite a few people, and I bet glasses-less 3d doesn't necessarily solve that issue.

Due to the insane cost and immaturity of actual glasses-less 3D (TVs aren't even for sale yet, do you really think Nintendo will have this cheap and hand-held size within a year?), Kotaku has made the interesting observation that they might use the same tech as this DSi game. Essentially the screen is a standard LCD but a camera tracks your face and adjusts the in-game perspective to compensate. Very simple, low cost and quite effective - perfect for Nintendo.

@crusader8463: This tech would work fine with your condition as it's all perspective trickery.

Isn't the DSi XL, in a way, obsolete already? I don't think the new hardware will satisfy the same needs as the XL does. Whatever that is.

I'm not confident in nintendo's ability to make me want a handheld, I have been completely uninterested in the last 2 iterations of the DS they released, and It looks like i will be disappointed again because I DON'T CARE ABOUT 3D.

The DS XL will sell to it's intended market, and to those gamers who want to take advantage of the bigger screens. I doubt this new machine will see the slow demise of DS software. I'm confident this new machine will be be able to play conventional DS games also, in the same way the original DS was able to play GBA games.

Cool. Probably using multiple layer LCD screens. Buy PureDepth stock folks (or maybe not, there are those auto-stereoscopic 3D televisions, but no idea who invented those). They're kinda showing it way too early though, Sony could easily rush and implement a similar tech in their own handheld now, if they weren't going to do that already of course. This is so cool, it's a shame they can't offer you a new TV with their next home system, heh.

The idea of 3D on a portable with no glasses excites me, and assuming the DSi store is going to carry over, with it's current trend of 1 good game every couple months, I'd have a pretty nice selection to look through when this thing releases stateside.

Dude that's just a straight up lie. Current 3D technology in theatres relies on polarised lenses allowing each eye to see a different image. When you close one eye you only see one image hence no 3D...

I bet the new PSP2 will also have 3D.  Nintendo probably wants to announce their system first so it seems Sony is copying them again.  That's probably why they announce this on such a weird date.
