Nintendo Dates And Prices The Nintendo 3DS

At its New York-based press event, Nintendo busts out all sorts of news for the new-fangled device.

The Nintendo 3DS will launch in North America on March 27, 2011 at a suggested retail price of $249.99, Nintendo announced at its New York-based press conference this morning. The handheld will debut in two colors: Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black, and will hit with several bits of pre-loaded software, including built-in augmented-reality games and an Internet browser.

Other than those key bits of news, Nintendo didn’t have too much to say about the device that we didn’t already learn in September. It’s still a handheld that can deliver glasses-less 3D. And it’s still a handheld with a DS-style set of controls, the biggest new feature of which being the 3D slider which will allow you to turn off 3D effects whenever you want. But a few interesting tidbits did sneak out!

== TEASER ==One Friends Code Rules Them All -- According to Nintendo, the 3DS will support the Friends Code system; however, codes are no longer software-dependent. That means you only have to enter your pals’ codes once to see them online across every game. Sure, it's not the best solution, but this is a step in the right direction.

How About That Launch Line-Up? -- Nintendo believes it’ll have 30 games on the shelves between launch and early June. This launch list includes PilotWings Resort, Nintendogs + Cats, Steel Diver, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, Madden NFL Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Ridge Racer 3D Resident Evil: The Mercenaries, Star Fox 64 3DThe Sims 3, LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Dual Pen Sports, Super Monkey Ball 3D, Thor: God of Thunder, Crush 3D, Samurai Warriors: Chronicles, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D, Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D (!), Rayman 3D, and Rabbids: Travel in Time

UPDATE: Looks like we might not see the following at launch, as we first reported. Nintendo is listing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeKid Icarus Uprising Mario Kart 3DS Animal Crossing 3DS, and  Paper Mario 3DS as "in the works," suggesting that they won't make the loose launch timeframe.

Built-In Software
-- The 3DS will ship with a built-in pedometer, and an overall games activity tracker that will, according to Nintendo, award you with Mario coins that can be used in select games. Also, look forward to the Mii Maker and the device’s built-in AR games functionality, which uses cards (six come with the device) to render games based off what the 3DS’ cameras see in your environment. An Internet browser and video player were confirmed as well at today’s event.

StreetPass vs. SpotPass -- All 3DS units will be able to detect each other by something called “StreetPass.” Most commonly, this’ll be used to “instantly exchange common game data,” according to Nintendo of America's official Twitter account. The 3DS will also be able to detect 3DS specific hotspots and receive “3D videos, downloadable games, add-on content, and locations-specific special offers” via SpotPass, a built-in Internet connection seeker.

No Caption Provided

Game Demos -- If you want to get your hands on a 3DS before launch, you’ll get your chance. Nintendo plans to put over 5000 units at retail and street locations.

Backwards Compatibility -- Just in case you missed this one, the 3DS can play Nintendo DS games with their original 2D visuals. Also, as we previously reported, you'll be able to transfer your DSi and DSi XL DS Shop games to your 3DS using a service that will be provided by Nintendo after hardware launch.

Hey, that's a lot stuff! Normally, I would consider this information overload, but you’ve had a few months to mull over a 3DS purchase. With official pricing and date out now, are you still down with getting a 3DS or will you be sitting on it for a while?

A title that is not available when the hardware launches has no business being called a "launch title".

After reading the launch line up I was all set to go pick up DOA and Street fighter 4 3D along with the 3DS. But after seeing what will be coming out soon after I think I'll skip DOA for now.

Pre-ordered mine today, doesn't take a lot to convince me it will be worth the purchase in the long run, hell I'm trilled with my DSi XL (though I skipped the DSi). Crush 3D is a nice surprise announcement, loved that game on PSP.

I will skip this , I rather save that cash for something better ,  the games lineup seems lackluster and a bunch of rehash titles  , not worthy  it IMO , but props to the people who will buy it just tell us if it was worthy

I was just waiting to see how the price would be at launch. Since it's $249 and not $300, I'm definitely going for it =)

Can't wait to try out the new Kid Icarus, Resident Evil, Pilotwings, Paper Mario... That list could go on forever =) Looks like a great lineup either way <3

In the aerial stages, yes.  The on-foot sections are action with full player-controlled movement.

Mmmm, maybe I'll wait for the next version.... Not that I have $250+ right now, this year is going to be too loaded with great games to drop that much on hardware.

Meh I'm gonna buy a DSi instead. That battery is too much hassle and I'll only be playing a DS on the bus/train/plane where I doubt I can keep it steady enough for the 3D effect to work well...

Paper Mario and Pit are the two titles which interest me for the system, though if they put out a Donkey Kong Land Returns I would have to get one solely for that.

It's about $50 too much for my personal tastes.  I want one, and I'll get one but not until there is a price reduction.  I don't need one immediately anyway since I play primarily JRPGs on my current DS and my past GBA.  I'll wait a year or two and by then it will be better priced and will have a good selection of RPGs to choose from.

Wait a minute... They are remaking Crush in 3D... that is the only game on that list that excites me. Crush was really cool, and 3D could make the game easier to play.

They're going to need to massively reduce production costs... $250 is way too much... If they're choosing to run it that high while still making a profit on the console, then Nintendo is run by mean, mean people.

A lot of those "launch widow" games are going to be pushed back. There's no way Nintendo is dumb enough to release 7-ish first part games within the first few months.

I always think about how wise I looked when I took the "wait and see" approach with the DS Phat.

I'm getting those same kind of vibes with this one too. Battery life alone has me thinking I'd be better off waiting on a hardware iteration. Let the soccer moms pay for Nintendo's production cost.

I don't even use my NDS or PSP anymore because of iPod Touch and my netbook. Doubt I'll buy this. A stand alone portable console just doesn't cut it in the world of portable all-in-one solutions like the iPhone.

The tech behind it sounds amazingly crazy and totally something I could get behind.

The launch lineup isn't selling me, and the price point is just this side of "I could buy a PS3" for me to really get in on the ground floor.

Anyways, I'm content with that Anniversary DSi XL I got for Xmas. I'll be using that as a metric to see if the system has staying power with me.

Except if you want to play quality games*.

* I understant that quality games are released for the Iphone, but on a much smaller scale when compared to the PSP or DS**.

When it gets a longer battery life and the price drop about $80, then I'll get one. It also doesn't influence my decision any more favourably by not putting out any original games at launch.

I like how everyone's screaming that $249 is a lot of money for a handheld when in Australia it's pretty cheap. Seriously guys, over here this thing's going to be priced at $350 or more!

As always, here's a bunch of people going "I WON'T BUY IT" who then get the slightest wiff of a good game or something neat about the system and run out of their house to buy one.
