Nintendo DSi: April 5, $169.99

That headline pretty much tells you everything you need to know, but hey, click through anyway!

No Caption Provided

OK, if you're looking forward to the impending North American launch of the Nintendo DSi and you somehow made it past this story's headline and that big image there without absorbing the release facts Nintendo announced today, I've further rendered them in the following haiku.

Out on April 5,
One-hundred sixty-nine bucks.
Black and blue; where's white?

Indeed, there appears to be no white DSi launching in April. Instead we've got that new electric blue version on the way, along with the standard black one. (I'll go for black.) Amazon is taking preorders as we speak, while Destructoid reports that GameStop will begin accepting your delicious, interest-generating early money tomorrow.

I was a little ho-hum about getting a DSi, because the cameras don't really excite me and the merit of the downloadable games service will only be proven after the system comes out and we see what kind of software gets developed. But I'm suddenly really excited about the DSi's support for WPA wireless security, as opposed to the DS Lite's relatively limited support only for the utterly worthless, outdated WEP standard. A couple weeks ago, I dropped my wi-fi router into WEP mode to connect my DS Lite to it, and within 30 minutes some delightful soul in my neighborhood had cracked the WEP key and started leaching my bandwidth. So if you're way into playing the DS online, and you care about keeping unauthorized heathens off your network, the DSi almost seems like a no-brainer purchase.

Finally I can play some more MarioKart online.... I haven't since I switched my wireless to WPA.

Always Be Driftin'.

Not that I'm getting one. I haven't been playing any MarioKart or anything else on the DS since the Q4 games started hitting for Xbox and PS3.

No, not $200. $169.99. That number isn't nearly close enough to round up. Although that number still isn't reassuring. There's no way Nintendo will be able to convince me to upgrade from my perfectly fine DS lite. The Wifi upgrade *would* perhaps be a good enough reason for me (I know, sad, isn't it?), but I read elsewhere that Wifi support will not be backwards compatible for older games, and newer games will have to be built to support it.

Hmmm, besides a camera, and new WiFi features is anything different? Like, better screen or quality of games?
sounds like a trap.

All of my outfits match white, I won't be pulling a blue DS out of my pocket anytime soon. Also it depends a lot on homebrew apps being compatible. And will I still be able to go online with my opera cart?

I would only be interested in buying a DS again if the DLC was virtual console or something. Whether that be NES and SNES games, or just old GB games. Either would be neat to have. Otherwise I think I'll pass.

So I can play Petz and Brain training?  No thanks.  I already have my Wii unplugged and covered in dust.  I don't need another "family friendly" product sitting next to it in a separate layer of dust.

Count me out.

I sold my GBA for an SP, then my SP for a DS, then my DS for a DS lite. I think i'll end the cycle and enjoy the same tning, minus a camera.

I still need more info before I make any kind of decision.  I definitely won't be picking it up at launch, maybe not until the first price cut.

Still have my "phat" and that's what I prefer, really.

This just in DSi will have retail games that cannot be played on any thing but the DSi, and this is to be expected but with more ram, high processor...ect expect to see games that do not take advantage of any of the DSi's other options but soley can only be played on it because of its ram...ect

"
You should have totally reported or attacked him.

Anyways, I don't want a DSi, I'm happy with my DS Lite that can use a flashcart. (I use it for homebrew, more than I play games on my DS lol)

I have an original DS and I have Mario 64 and Resident Evil for it.  I am pretty much disgusted with how much milking Nintendo likes to do of the DS.

Yeah, uhm, no...I don't think so. I have a Gameboy Advance and then the SP came around, that was a nice upgrade and I had no issue plunking down more cash for a better screen and form factor. Sorry Nintendo, this time around it's not worth $170 more dollars. Not even close.

Edit: Yeah, I do have a Lite, and a fatty also.

I'm getting a DS Lite for my birthday in March, and there's really nothing in the DSi's featureset that makes me want to wait for it instead. That extra $40 saved can go toward an actual game, like Final Fantasy IV.

This is the one that doesn't have the GBA port, right?  I hope the ones with GBA ports will still be on sale, if this will be the last way to be able to play my old games without buying a new Gameboy Player and Gamecube...

The DSi is retailing in Europe on the 3rd of April for £150 in black and white. That's £50 more than what the RRP of the DS Lite is. I might consider it if I can sell my DS Lite for a good price, but until then, no thanks Nintendo!
