Nintendo to Stream Big Wii U Event Tomorrow [UPDATED]

Wii U has no games? Uh, maybe you guys are forgetting Arkham City?

I don't understand why people are so actively vehement and bitter toward Nintendo. Reading through the comments thus far it's easy to see that a lot of people are either very misinformed or jumping to conclusions. Yes, Nintendo's aims and goals as a game company do not wholly align with the particular tastes that probably dominate the Giantbomb community, they carry their own idiosyncratic agenda. There not trying to take part in a technology arm's race, and I don't think they are, as Pachter put it, arrogant, in the sense that they are so confident after the success of the Wii that they'll hit success again. No, taking risks does not mean their arrogant, it just mean's that they are willing to take risks, which the Wii U is, in many ways. For as much as people feel Nintendo get's it wrong, or lags behind, I still think at their core they coming from an admirable place and should be given the benefit of a doubt, at least until you are able to experience hands on what they are offering.

This is why most people are "cynical". I LOVE Nintendo, but by all accounts they have an underpowered machine with MAYBE one game that interests me (ZombiU) announced, and the system is out in 2 months.

When Zelda, Mario, or Metroid come out, I'll pick one up, but I'm not even a little bit excited, and I think the screen in the controller is a good idea. If I'm not excited, as a professed Nintendo fanboy, I fear for this system's potential.

Isn't an underpowered machine and the potential for innovative games what Nintendo has always done and they've always sold gangbusters.

It is underpowered compared to the systems it will be competing against in one year (and a lot of the games shown so far look like Wii games), and I said that I look forward to Nintendo's innovative games (none of which we've seen yet, which explains the cynicism). Wii Sports was indicative of the potential of the Wii. Zelda showed how the Wii could be used with a mainstream game. All we have right now is NintendoLand which looks so underwhelming, and Pikmin, which looks like Pikmin 2 but with PC-style controls. I don't think this system will doom Nintendo, but this is the lowest level excitement I can remember for a major console release in a long time.

Video game website users are worthless scum with a stupidly ridiculous sense of entitlement. I've grown less and less interested in what users have to say because everything they say is pessimistic and annoying.

I wouldn't go that strongly, and I also wouldn't limit it to just videogame enthusiast sites. Large swaths of the internet, it seems, are dedicated to this bizarre race to the bottom of a massive affectation of passionless jadedness.

For the most part, I agree with you, but what gets me about Nintendo is that, for all the risks they supposedly take with hardware, they're so conservative when it comes to software. Personally, I don't plan to get the Wii U, but it's not because some deep-seated hatred for the company. It's just because I didn't enjoy the Wii.

However, Nintendo did show quite a bit of arrogance this generation toward people who were dissatisfied with the Wii, simply pointing to hardware sales as if that were the sole metric of consumer enjoyment. Nintendo actively dislikes people who don't agree with them and are very dismissive of differing opinions, and they deserve criticism for that.

That, and we all know the online is going to suck balls on this thing.

I just hope they made enough of them to not have a repeat of the Wii launch.

Something tells me they're planning a repeat of the Wii's launch. Why not? It proved successful in the long run.

I keep reminding myself that if I stick to the core games of the Nintendo library I'll be a satisfied customer. I disliked most of the Wii generation but I'm willing to take a chance with the Wii U.

as a recently new owner of a 3DS XL, i suppose i still have some investment in Ninty. however, they have to pull out something really interesting for me to be onboard with the Wii U at this point. the only thing that really tickles me right now is new Pikmin. i have little doubt that at least on the 1st party side the system will eventually have quite a lot to offer, especially with the eventual Super Smash Bros, but their marketing and approach is all wrong it looks like, and i'm doubtful they'll be able to make a big splash with it. if they really were dedicated to reclaiming 3rd party support and a core gamer audience i think they would've waited a year, improved the hardware of the system, and maybe sold it at a loss in 2013 to compete with MS and Sony. as it is i see it having that Nintendo properties draw but it doesn't look like it has enough innovation or direction.

but then again, many of the same things were said about the DS and, to a lesser degree, the Wii.

No you do not

Most of you saying 'show us some damn games' wouldn't buy this console regardless. There's no reason to front. I get it: everyone has limited funds and limited time, not to mention pre-existing friends lists and account data, but the even the Wii had FAR more quality games than most people know or give it credit for, and that didn't end up swaying the average avid gamer.

Anyway, Nintendo do have an uphill battle on their hands. A repeat of Wii's success is just not going to happen in today's market and they don't exactly have a Wii Sports to offer (I do contend that Nintendoland is ore fun than most of you might think). They need to stress that people can use all of their old Wii stuff and play all of those games on it; show a strong value proposition. Then possibly also shows the general public that it can become a very sleek and versatile universal remote. It's going to be interesting

i sold my wii a couple years back for like $150. twas a mistake, but hey i'll keep making them until there are no more to make. :(

Math checks out. It's never a 1:1 conversion of Japanese Yen to United States Dollar with consoles (or gaming as whole). I'd expect it to be 350 USD for the Premium model and 275 USD for Basic on our shores.

What are they smoking over at Nintendo? An Xbox 360, which has a million titles and a 250GB HDD is $200. The Wii U is possibly slightly better graphically speaking and will launch at these prices? I don't get it...

The Wii was 250 USD at launch, so I'm already changing my guess to 250 USD for basic and 300-325 for Premium model.

I see your angle, but disagree. Xbox 360 did not carry such a friendly price tag at launch (300 USD, right?). Plus the Wii U is new. New things grab attention. Disregard whatever issues most people have with the specifications of the hardware; the Wii U is a new platform that will be bustling with fresh titles (hopefully).

Mario looked a little stoned walking away in that video. Must be on the mushrooms again.

I really wanted Mario to trip on his way out.

Weirdly excited about this. Even though I was not a super fan of the Wii, there were still games out there that I liked, and still a Nintendo fan.
