I don't think I have ever thought a Mario game was beautiful....Looks like I am getting a WiiU this Christmas.

Posted by oldenglishC

I can't imagine any situation where showing a Wii game on the second screen while still controlling it with a Wiimote would be useful. Just let me use the gamepad as a pro controller for Wii games, Nintendo.

3D World looks so fucking good.

Posted by KDR_11k

Gotta say I never cared for the DKC games so the delay leaves me cold.

I'm not a big time Zelda fan, so maybe I don't get it, but is "you can pick which dungeon to do next" really that big of a deal?

3D World actually looks like the breath of fresh air people have wanted from a Mario game since the original Galaxy. Even though I enjoyed 3D Land I was skeptical, but the new trailer put those worries at ease. Looks beautiful.

Posted by King9999

3D Wold's looking much better than when I first saw it!

Posted by TheMasterDS

Shame about Tropical Freeze. Was really hoping to be able to compare it to Brothers come GOTYs 2013 by saying it was better than Brothers. Now that'd be terribly silly because Brothers won't come out again in 2014.

None of this interests me, and it makes me a little sad.

I still think Patrick is completely insane for thinking 3D Land is the best 3D Mario game (you can't beat Galaxy or Galaxy 2, don't be crazy) but 3D World is looking completely bonkers and fun in a way I can really get behind.

Also, this. The freedom allowed in something like the Dolphin emulator really puts a damper on any pointless new Wii feature on the Wii U. Just let me map buttons/waggle to the gamepad and play them there, please. I'd be alright with playing Punch-Out or Rhythm Heaven or something on there but having to use a Wii Remote totally ruins the point.

Of course, this is all in the context of those three games being some of my absolute favorites ever. It's picking your favorite children.

I mean, the original Mario Galaxy transports me to a Disneyland-esque happy place even just by hearing the music. I ended up writing a long-form blog post about everything I loved about that game too. I feel like 3D Land was a cool concept that wasn't 100% successful but to each their own. I'd definitely agree with Jeff's 4-star review. It's great, I agree, but at this point it's not even my favorite 3DS game. (And Mario games are typically my favorites.)

Not to diminish your opinion though. I understand why you would say it's the best; I just think you're a little crazy for it. Thanks for all the hard work you do Patrick!

For those asking for game control on the Gamepad, it's not that simple. Certainly not when games offer multiplayer, or no classic controller support, or odd configurations like Monster Hunter 3 allowing you to use the Wii Remote connected to the Classic Controller. There are too many game-specific configurations to allow for a one-Gamepad-controls-all solution.

Posted by Tidel

I don't think Nintendo knows what it's doing.

Am I the only one that is completely underwhelmed by these Nintendo updates?

A shame 3D world isn't coming to the 3DS... I just bought one of those but don't plan on ever getting a WiiU

This is very true, and something that a lot of people overlook.

The Wii U gamepad has IR emitters around the camera, meaning you can point your wiimotes at it and use the gamepad as a Primary screen for Wii titles. Obviously this means you'll either need the dock or the gamepad stand, but it's a nice feature.

"A setting to select which cable outputs sound is available through "TV""

I know there were some people for which this was a dealbreaker, glad to see they fixed it.

All I want is to be able to use it for games that support the classic controller. It's not like I'm asking for world peace, I just want to play Xenoblade Chronicles with a controller that feels comfortable in my manly hands.

And they changed the Wii U eShop music. WHY IS NOBODY MENTIONING THIS ? DID IT ONLY CHANGE FOR ME ? AM I CRAZY ? TELL ME !

Also, this new firmware update is a lot of small upgrades rolled into one big update. I mean, the Wii U is already a damn fine system, and it's getting better. Still waiting on the games though... And seeing this Nintendo Direct, I'll have to wait a little bit more it seems.

I'm intrigued by the changes to Zelda. Hopefully this points to a return to the more open design of the earlier games where exploration and creativity were encouraged.

edit: other thoughts...

I forgot to mention that I freaking love the art style of the new Zelda game.

And it feels somehow wrong to say this, but Wii Party looks really fun.

Also Bravely Default looks like the most JRPG-ass JRPG I've ever JRPG'd.

That lives in the attic and is brought a weekly bucket of fish heads for sustenance.

Fair enough. I want that too. But it just seems like people are thinking that making all the games work with the gamepad out of the gate is a trivial thing. If it was that simple, it would've been done.

Kirby is my dude.

3DS is looking better and better, I may have to pick one up. Bravely Default and Link Between Worlds are setting up to be some cool retro throwback twists.

Is bravely default any good? It certainly looks like something I'd enjoy.

I need that Phoenix Wright demo now!!!

Hey, I thought Super Mario Sunshine was great, and I grew up playing SMB3, SMW and SM64. It's maybe not quite as good as those top-tier classics, but I think Sunshine's got a lot going for it. A part of me always expected people to feel better about it as the initial backlash wore off.

I'd never really considered it, but I'm one of those people. I've got my Wii hooked up to my PC monitor via an AV connector-HDMI/3.5mm dongle I ordered from Hong Kong. Good to know!

It's certainly supposed to be. I'm on board for it.

Also on board for Mario 3D World when I have some spare cash to waste on a WiiU.

There’s a demo of Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies in the eShop right now.

...I GOTTA GO.

Posted by Eribuster

Also, I think the eShop-only Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies is only $29.99? Link

Kinda nice.

Really impressed by the Super Mario 3D World trailer; makes me want to get a Wii U. It addressed some of my concerns on the ambitions and scope of the game from the E3 trailer.

Good choice on delaying Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Between Rayman Legends, Sonic Lost World, and Super Mario 3D World, there are plenty of platformers for the end of the year.

The Wii U line up still looks weak. The 3DS for the foreseeable future is looking nice.

Finally, yay! More Kibry!

Donkey Kong :( That was my most anticipated game...

I'm really glad GiantBomb does these Nintendo Direct summaries. Because honestly, those things are just painful to sit through for half an hour.

I love that big fat "Choose between English or Japanese Audio" disclaimer at the bottom of the Bravely Default trailer.
