No Jukebox for Rock Band 2

It was mentioned back at E3, but Rock Band 2's non-interactive listening mode has been cut from the final release.

When asked about his cornrows, Axl stated
When asked about his cornrows, Axl stated "I don't believe there's a reason (I don't, I don't believe it)."
I've been seeing a pocket of online confusion from folks that are out there buying and playing Rock Band 2 today regarding the supposed Jukebox Mode. This mode was mentioned back at E3 and was designed to be a listening mode that would play the songs while polygonal rock dudes did their thing on-screen with no required interaction from the player.

Well, you can stop looking. It didn't make it to the final version of the game. Here's the statement from some of the documentation that was provided to reviewers:

NOTE: Jukebox Mode is a feature that was experimented with for Rock Band 2. Ultimately Harmonix and MTV Games believe it will ultimately enhance the Rock Band experience for players but we won't be rolling it out until we have it perfected.

Sounds like they're still working on getting it in there somewhere down the line. Ultimately. But what is there to "perfect" about this mode? Playing the music back doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would require a lot of heavy lifting. But then, that's why I write about games and don't make them, right?

Somewhere Axl Rose is thinking about the free Dr. Pepper he'll be drinking when his album finally drops this year and smirking because he knows this makes it a little harder for you to record Shackler's Revenge and send copies to all your hoodlum friends.

I would never use the feature since I don't really like to listen that kind of music. I generally like most of the music games so I'm still willing to play the game anyway.

Ultimately, I think that this is ultimately a disappointing bit of information. And writing.

It is going to be about rights and legal issues. Playing the song to play the song is one thing but offering your song or album up to just play is a bit different in the eyes of the music industry, heck you play your music to load and your broadcasting and need to be sued these days.

I am sure it is there in the code and when the legal stuff is sorted there will be an "update" and on it goes but I am betting not all songs would be available though.

I really can't think of a possible time where I would actually use this. People are always begging to PLAY rockband during parties. So I don't see getting much use out of just watching shit while music plays.

I hope they include it as free DLC in the future. It's a little absurd to pay for these songs and not have the ability to just listen to them sans interaction.

EDIT: And the MotoRokr sucks for music. The audio port is horribly flawed.

chuckimus, Guns n' Roses is now known as Velvet Revolver.

Unfortunately, they didn't leave their antagonism toward their lead vocalist behind with the old name.

I assume 'perfecting' is their word for 'actually finishing developing'.

I'm kinda bummed by this news.  Sure the point to the game is to play it, but I always got a kick out of watching the Rock Band 1 do it's music video thing when it was idling.  I liked the idea of kicking back and watching the performances when my fingers were cramping up and needed a break.  One of the things I think Harmonix nailed is the whole "concert film" aesthetic, with all the cuts and filters and stuff on top of the great animation, so I was looking forward to letting that part of the game take front and center  for a bit.

Here's hoping it shows up sometime as a patch.

You gotta wonder if it isn't a licensing issue.  There's nothing to perfect about playing music, that your product already plays...

That's a shame. Their statement is enigmatic, and I'm wondering if it perhaps has something to do with the licenses they secured.

All you have to do is turn performance mode on and create a setlist in quickplay. Done. There's your Jukebox Mode.

The "band" is a joke now?

Why are people so down on G 'n R?

Welcome to the Jungle?  Sweet Child of Mine? Patience? Paradise City? Don't Cry? November Rain? Live and Let Die?

Yeah.. it's been a while, but I'll gladly pull out a can of Vidal Sassoon for them at any time.

It was probably a licensing issue. If you're going to just listen to the songs, the labels would probably rather you buy the album or get it from iTunes. I can't see this a being a very important feature anyway.

How about instead of working on patching this in, they work on putting Rock Band/ Rock Band 2 out in Australia already!!!
I mean it's been almost a year since it was released in the US and we still have nothing...not even a release date!

whatever, this game is about "playing" the music not just listening to it.
I don't think this would have been a very important feature.
But then agian you wouldn't think it would be that hard to just have the same animations as playing the song 100% and just have that running as the song plays. But that's why I don't make games.

Kinda sucks it wasn't in the game, hopefully it gets patched in soon.  In the meantime, people can always put on no-fail mode and play the vocals if they want to watch/listen to the music.
