No, That Absurd Witcher 2 Patch Isn't Actually 9GB

An issue with Steam is causing users to download the whole game over again.

I saw more than a few people complaining on this here Internets last night about a crazy 9GB patch for CD Projekt's The Witcher 2. When exactly does a "patch" stop being a "patch"?

Turns out the whole thing is an error. CD Projekt's told me the patch is much more reasonable--less than 20MB--but an issue with Steam specifically forced users to basically download the whole game all over again. As far as CD Projekt can tell, it's only a Steam problem right now.

"We’re working with Steam to get the issue sorted by Monday morning," a company spokesperson said.

Darn. Gamers with digital pitchforks fighting over 9GB would've made a more interesting story.

Time to run from the big, bad bandwidth monster.

Still, there are 2GB patches floating around for some games. it's seriously stupid how unfinished some games are.

Many of my Steam games do this.
Every time Shogun 2 patches, I have to download the entire 16GB game

I don't like what the patch did to the gamepad control scheme.

Now every instance of non-gameplay action has to be done with the D-pad instead of the left analogue stick, which is awkward and slow. Especially when you're moving through menus or even trying to change your special abilities during a battle.

Pain in the arse, to be honest.

My brother has issues identical to this. TF2 and Splinter Cell Conviction say that they're updating but are actually downloading the entire game again... It has put him off playing steam games...

This is often the case with games that have a launcher.

It's annoying, but a small price to pay in order to enjoy the convenience of Steam.

don't even bother it. I deleted the whole witcher 2 game from steam. since then I have played retail version which is much better. patch is only 16MB. after installation, it was automatically updated itself. total size was 29MB (included Troll Trouble DLC). better. don't have to download non sense of 9GB for the whole day. fuck that shit. so will steam do the same for next update?

Nothing new for Steam.
The worst part is whenever one of these huge "patches" come along for a big title Steam's servers get bogged down pretty hard.

This seems to happen with Company of Heroes too.  I have downloaded that game about eight times over in updates now.

Woot!  Patch fixed my loading problem.  In the past the game wouldn't even launch without disabling full screen mode.  Now, it plays like a charm.  God bless your Polish game patching hearts!

Actually, the whole game was 16gb. The reason why it has to download 9gb is because the files that need to be replaced (the 20mb) are inside a 9gb file. You can choose to blame Steam or CDProjekt for this.... I think im gonna blame the company who gave me a 16gb download with no pre-load  so they can advertise their crappy site ;)

To be fair it's only downloading half the game again, the full game is 16GB.

Fools should have bought it on GOG instead of Steam.  Just saying.

I'd rather have as many of my games tied to one single digital distribution service as possible, thanks.

Yes, I cannot stand having to open another distribution platform. That is why the one game I have on impulse is never played. I don't even have impulse installed.

So, does CDProjeckt or Steam wanna send me some money to pay my overage to my shitty Canadian ISP?  Downloading the game in the first place probably took me to the limit with normal surfing.

It's 16GB unpacked and installed. What you're downloading is its compressed form, and it is the full game.
Plenty games on Steam are compressed for faster downloads and then unpacked seamlessly right after they're done downloading.

But doesn't GoG just save to your desktop or whatever, DRM free?  So instead of opening a separate program, you just open up the game?

Thank goodness - I rally want to play this game, but with a PC about as strong as an iPad right now, I don't think I'll be playing it any time soon...

When I first downloaded the game on Steam I had to download 16GB I remember this because it took forever to finish.

I would actually try writing Steam about that. They seem to have pretty good customer service and if it was a mistake on their end they might do something for you.

Finally beat Witcher 1 literally 15 minutes ago, now onto 2.  And Vinny, keep up with Witcher 1, it was totally worth it.

@kmg90: Haha, I have a wonderful 4Mbit connection, so it usually takes about 2 days.
Luckily no download cap.

@patrickklepek: I think you need to look into this story once again and try to find out what the problem is.  1.2 came out and Steam users have to download another 9gigs of data.  16gb + 9gb + 9gb is 34 gigs and that's not cheap for some users with limited bandwidth.

@raiz265: Valve said that it won't change, every patch will be 9 GB.
