Official Japanese Fallout Site Features 8-Bit Fallout Remake

Remake more like demake amirite?!?

Marketing or not, this is radical. Bethesda has created a brilliant 8-bit reconstruction of the Capital Wasteland exclusively for its official Japanese Fallout Web site. The point, from what I can tell, is to attract Japanese RPG enthusiasts to the series, and to explain what an open-world or a "Freestyle RPG" is.

In this "demake," you as the Vault Dweller, can travel to several familiar Wasteland locations, speak with a couple of NPCs, and fight a Super Mutant turn-based-style. The content appears to end there, though I suppose I might not be seeing everything it has to offer. The language barrier is proving to be, you know, a barrier.

Despite not having much to offer in terms of gameplay, this website is worth checking out for the novelty of seeing Fallout rendered in 8-bit graphics. As Bethesda put it on its blog the other afternoon, you definitely get a taste of what could have been if Fallout was instead created in 1987 by a Japanese development studio.

JRPG.... JRPG never changes...

I'd be doubly interested if they got ron pearlman to throw that in the game.

Well, that would just be Megami Tensei II, then.

Why not just give them a crack at Wasteland, licensing issues non-withstanding?  It isn't all that different than the early Wizardry games in terms of game play, and that series was super big over there.

EA owns Wasteland.  So yeah Bioware could make a Wasteland sequel at some point....

As a person that gave a fairly big 'meh' at Fallout 3's shooting, action, and dated Oblivion engine, I'd have far more interest in playing an 8-bit Fallout RPG like this instead.

Bethesda tries to get JRPG fans into Fallout.

Bethesda accidentally makes all their fans want a JRPG Fallout.

Also yeah most early Megami Tensei/Shin Megami Tensei games are basically 8/16-bit Fallout.

If you want a taste for what Fallout is like if it's an 8 bit game from the '80s, play Wasteland, made by one of the founders of Interplay, who was involved with the creation of Fallout. It's also really good!

I'm afraid your foot is several years too late. Not that the term is actually ever used that much, but then there aren't that many demakes around either.

It's really clever and a very good marketing idea. This isn't a necessarily a 'demake' (which would imply gameplay to me--it's all about semantics and lexical unit choices, after all). It seems to serve as an "advertisement" (seems to backtrack from this previous advertising campaign: http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/08/04/fallout_protests/) for the Fallout games in Japan. From what I got out of it, it's a flash site that mostly explains Fallout's gameplay in an 8-bit RPG fashion. IIRC, Dragon Quest sites in Japan (used to?) do this, as do a few universities in Japan (I recall a Japanese university's website being made in the image of Mother/Earthbound).

It doesn't, however, detract from the fact that I'd like to play a Fallout game in this fashion. Wasteland, here I come!

Not sure why he put it in quotes, demake is already a term. Saw a pretty good mock-up of Bioshock for the original Game Boy a few weeks back.

Maybe if Bethesda brought out a game without game breaking bugs. Then I bet the Japanese consumers won't mind a Western RPG.

Stop wasting time on gimmicks like these and fix the damn game.

It's designed to show how Fallout is better and different than the typical tiresome JRPG.  The fact you can go anywhere, actually make a difference to the world by responding to characters in different ways, and assumingly (I haven't reached the turn-based-battle thing due to the language barrier) show how VATS is crazy different from JRPG style 'attack/defend/run' in the best possible way.

It's reinforcing the 'JRPGs are boring' slogan by showing how much better JRPGs would be if they followed Fallout's style of 'actual roleplaying'.
