Official Japanese Fallout Site Features 8-Bit Fallout Remake

Remake more like demake amirite?!?

Marketing or not, this is radical. Bethesda has created a brilliant 8-bit reconstruction of the Capital Wasteland exclusively for its official Japanese Fallout Web site. The point, from what I can tell, is to attract Japanese RPG enthusiasts to the series, and to explain what an open-world or a "Freestyle RPG" is.

In this "demake," you as the Vault Dweller, can travel to several familiar Wasteland locations, speak with a couple of NPCs, and fight a Super Mutant turn-based-style. The content appears to end there, though I suppose I might not be seeing everything it has to offer. The language barrier is proving to be, you know, a barrier.

Despite not having much to offer in terms of gameplay, this website is worth checking out for the novelty of seeing Fallout rendered in 8-bit graphics. As Bethesda put it on its blog the other afternoon, you definitely get a taste of what could have been if Fallout was instead created in 1987 by a Japanese development studio.

@zoner: Or Crystalis, for that matter.  Nuclear holocaust was apparently more popular in Japan in the 80s.

does this mean they dont like current gen fallout so retro'ed their own? I am not sure where the idea came from or who it was directed to but it is certainly very good looking.

Wouldn't the Japs be a little offended by a nuclear fallout themed game?

It's strange to see how little the games have changed since the 1980's.

Fallout 1/2 (the old 2-D isometric versions) were kind of spiritual successors to a game called Wasteland - which had an open, persistent world and party members/NPC's that would react differently based on conversation trees, etc.    The path to the Capitol & Vegas wasteland is clear.

It's also easy to see how little Japanese RPG's have changed -- many still have the same menu items you saw in Dragon Warrior (Quest) back in the mid-1980's, which were actually borrowed from early western RPG's like Ultima.

I personally think that modern JRPG's need a major evoluton or revolutionary change, because the current batch are stale & completely out of sync with most gamers in the West.    They should keep tradition, but need to look closely at what Bioware/Bethesda have done recently and borrow a few things.   If there is another round of Final Fantasy games as bad as the current one, then the series will live up to the name.

I'm interested to see if this at all is successful at accomplishing its purpose. Will this have any affect on the Japanese consumers' mindset regarding WRPGs?

Less so that they would be by being called "Japs" I should think.

Doesn't sound like there is enough content to warrant that.

Too late, it's been a term used in the indie gaming community for years now, hell there have even been demake competitions.
