Ogle This Incredibly Huge Metroid Prime Artwork

Gigantic images of Samus at rock bottom prices!

In honor of Metroid Prime Trilogy's recent release, Nintendo sent over some insanely high-res artwork of Samus Aran and friends that I figured I'd pass along. We're talking widths and heights in the multiple thousands of pixels, so this stuff will serve as backgrounds on even the largest desktops, if you're the sort of person who adorns your computer with images of video game characters. Heck, you could probably go down to your local print shop and make a poster out of some of these. Do what you want!

There's your preview images, and you can head over to the image gallery to see the full versions. Did you know we archive the original size of every image uploaded to the site? Load up an image individually and then look for the floating magnifying glass when you mouse over it to expand to full size. You'll find some staggeringly large images here and there. Ah Metroid, yet another Nintendo franchise I have little (if any) love for..

Man, Metroid Prime has great art. I'm definitely going to use a few of these as desktop images (as it was said-they're gigantic).

Awesome, needs some more Zero Suit Samus though.

Cool. The Trilogy box set should have come with a small Retro Studios concept art book... The standard of art is high in the Trilogy. it deserved to be showcased.

Nice... been needing a some wallpaper.

Oh BRILLIANT. I love the Prime renders. Nostalgia for Prime 2 ='D

Samus sure is one broad shouldered lady, except when shes not wearing the armor that is :P

haha 1900x1200 is still classed as ridiculously  huge these days.

i guess i'm a lucky one to to have this be sort of not amazing

Posted by MrKlorox
@Zabant: no but 2480x3996 is pretty large for these kind of assets

Dang. Look at that cold, sharp, metallic breastplate.

Loving the purplish one, with just her helmet. Samus is one of the greatest heroes in video games.

could someone give me a good comparison of what resolutions translate into cm/inches?

Posted by Virago

she is so effing hot, man.

Edited by Brackynews

Hey Brad/Dave, is this a good time to request that the image data sidebar also display the original resolution? :)

A crisp 8x10" at 300 DPI will be 2400x3000 pixels.  3000 = 300 x 10"   and   2400 = 300 x 8".
The formula for scanning and printing is Resolution(x,y) = DPI x Physical Length, so you can rearrange that to Resolution / DPI = Length to find out the size of image you can get from whatever file you have, with what you consider an acceptable quality for DPI (dots per inch).  Hitting between 200 and 300 DPI is best.

The important thing to remember is that the DPI value only translates between resolution and length.  It doesn't mean anything on its own, only based on what you want the outcome to be, in either direction.  A good image editor like Photoshop will do all the calculations for you in real time when you change one of the three values.  Just as one more example, you could print a little sprite of Samus at 2 DPI, and it would make a great iron-on transfer for a shirt.  Nice and blocky!

Um, it does. A very small one though. It's shown on the (awesome) website and everything.

I'm more astounded by the craftmanship displayed in the environments and their textures. Prime 3 especially looks incredible and shows that the Wii, often attacked for its low memory by developers who pretend to know what they're talking about as they try to put the blame on everyone but themselves, still has more than enough to have large, varied and very detailed areas. Most third parties are happy with bland textures spanning whole surfaces but in Prime 3 almost every wall and floor has multiple and quite sharp (always considering the 480p res) details, including embedded lighting, particle, or other, even animated, effects that enhance the visuals further. It's really so very lovely and amazing.

I can't wait to finally see what Retro's got cooking up nowadays.

I already have a wallpaper version of the 3rd pic, that was like 4 months ago when i got it

People in Retro know how to draw and make good things.

Yea I know but it's tiny, it's looks like a leaflet, they should have put a proper book in there with art from all three games.

Is the white suit from the second prime game?

Edited by MrKlorox

The big blue Dark Samus is a little wide-set compared to the white Light Samus. Is that intentional?

@Linkyshinks: Nintendo offering premium collector editions for their legendary first party IPs? Nope, that'd be a little too obvious.

The images are huge! I'm using the grey one as my background now. :)

Either giantbomb or nintendo ruined it's high res ness  and they broke about 16 laws of digital printing formats and digital graphic design when they converted it.

They are now a horrible looking compressed  jpeg  (not as big of crime)  and they are now only around 600x375 pixels and 30 kb where a decent high res jpeg would be at least 1mb.  Turning it into a bad compressed jpeg alone would ruin it for print (use a raw or tiff it is better for printing and photo work)  but then giantbomb/nintendo killed the res and that flushed the rest of the thrill down the toliet..

thanks anyway though I guess next time don't ruin it by turning it into crappy compressed web formats and shrinking the hell out of it. Blowing it up on my 30 inch monitors with a res of  2560 by 1600+  as wallpaper or photoshop  is a pixelated nightmare and you can forget  printing them out even a high res JPEG look like ass printing and going  to a pro print shop like kinkos or whatever would make it look even worse and  they would most likey turn you away saying they cant print it because they don't want to look bad when it turns out as crap..

Did you read the article before commenting?

Example of how it'd turn out if you did this (open in new tab/window so the GB overlay doesn't take over):
