Okami Going HD on PSN Later This Year

Another chance for people to play Clover Studio's painterly adventure.

If you, like me, still haven’t played Okami, Capcom is giving us another chance with Okami HD, scheduled for a release on PlayStation Network this “fall” for PlayStation 3.

Besides the high-definition bump, Okami will have support for PlayStation Move. You’ll still be able to use a controller.

I’ve never purposely passed on Okami, and I know how many great things have been said about it, but circumstances have worked against me...and the supposedly 40-hour playtime has always given me pause.

Maybe I’ll finally make the leap. Okami HD being only $19.99 helps, too.

PERFECT. i'm in the same boat. i never found a copy of Okami around here, though. probably maddeningly expensive like Fatal Frame is.

just make a new one already!

Posted by bassman2112

God I'm looking forward to that. Okami was one of my favorite PS2 games ever and I was thinking about getting it for the Wii, then realized I never use my Wii haha.

Posted by Brunchies

YAAAAAAY, too bad I don't have a ps3. Okami was amazing on the wii even if the waggle was sort of messed up, just a great game, I should really finish it though.

Posted by Make_Me_Mad

Aside from having maybe one or two boss-fights too many, Okami was one of the best games I'd ever played. I do hope they make the controls a bit more lenient for the PS3 version considering how many people complained about them.

Posted by kidman

God, that games deserves so much more.. I rarely finish games and I've spent like 32h on that one. Amazing game.

Dear Capcom,

If you fuck with the staff credits again, I will never buy a product of yours for as long as I live.

Sincerely,

-Duffy

One of the best PS2 games out there in an already phenomenal collection of games. I will admit that the game is a bit too long for it's own good, they make you repeat some bossfights a few too many times for a game that's already tremendously lengthy, but it is oh so worth the ride through. I always felt like Okami was (and still is) the best "Zelda" game since Majora's Mask, with a much larger focus on the narrative (and that narrative is pretty fantastic).

I don't normally get excited for an HD port, but a beautiful game like this was practically begging for it.

Posted by adamazing

It's an amazing game, one of my favorites, but I'll admit it is a bit too long. It took me a year to finish it because I thought I had beaten the game, only to realize there was a lot more to play. I needed a break. As time went on, I thought maybe it's not that great... but randomly one day I had the urge to finish it and did. I do love it.

I also spent way too much time fishing... but that's really my fault and can't blame the game for that. I don't know why I get hooked by fishing in games so much. I had about 80 hours total, and I think 20 of it was just fishing.

Agreed. The end credits for Okami is the perfect reflection to that huge adventure.

Same boat as Patrick as well. Never got around to it, and any 40 hour adventure tends to intimidate me nowadays, what with having a baby and limited play-times and all. I'm currently attempting to go through Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, another long game, and I'm wondering where I'll ever find the time to finish it.

Looking forward to giving this a go though! It looks fantastic in HD.

If the staff credits aren't intact then I will skip on this version entirely.

Posted by Napalm

How come God Hand hasn't been fucking released eight million different times since the PlayStation 2 debut? I hate you, Capcom.

Posted by BonOrbitz

Bought the PS2. Never played it.

Sold the PS2 version for the Wii version. Never played it.

Will probably sell the Wii version for the PS Move version. May not play it there either...?

still haven’t played Okami

I'm shacking my head at you Patrick. You mean to tell me you haven't played one of the best Zelda clones out there!?

Anyway, this is going to be awesome.

I recently finished this game on PS2 and it was one hell of a game. Seems HD graphics does wonders to it too, looks amazing.

Posted by joshth

Everyone who has never played Okami needs to play it. It's beautiful in so many ways.

Posted by Lord_Punch

This was my favorite game of 2006. Can't wait to play it again.

Why why WHY is this not coming to Vita?

As excited as I am for this, I have to agree. That's mainly why I passed on the Wii version.

People read credits? This is a welcome to Erf moment for me. Pow! Right in the kisser. I hope they cut even more people from the credits just to spite people who get annoyed by it.

Posted by TripMasterMunky

I've always wanted to play Okami but never got around to it. I was thinking of buying the Wii version for awhile, but maybe this will be the best time to jump in.

Posted by hermes

Patrick, you should really love this game. It was one of the best Zelda-like games before the release of Darksiders.

Actually, forget that, calling it a "Zelda-like game" is a disservice. Let's just say its one of the best adventure games of the PS2 generation.

It was a legal problem that prevented them from using the original credit roll right? If that was the case and the legal problem was that big of an issue, I doubt they'll resolve it for this release. (Why they couldn't just make a new one and remove the copyright infringing portion, I'll never know - but I'm not a copyright lawyer).

Looks interesting.

Never played it huh...endurance run then?

To be fair, the credit sequence to Okami gave us a pretty damn beautiful montage of the journey with a great vocal song behind it. One of the rare occurrences where you really want to watch them.

I do sympathize with everyone else, they really need to make sure the credits make it back in.

Posted by BasketSnake

I never played it either but I know what's been said and written about it so now is the time for me to play it.

Not at bad price, I never played it either, I might finally give this my support.

Cutting the credits in Okami is like removing the opening sequence in a James Bond movie. You need those there.

Slow the scroll speed, special thank everyone's grandmother. Problem solved.

I put nearly 60 hours into it first time through, it's such a wonderful game. I'm totally going to buy it although I had an Okami-ish fix with Okamiden, which unfortunately was made on the most unsuitable system for that type of game. I'm not going to draw on my tv this time around to do those stone block puzzles.

Edited by rubberluffy

Oh boy, I can't wait for Blockhead Grande to be in HD! :(

Seriously though, this is the best Zelda game I've ever played, and is still one of the best looking games too.

I would love this and Viewtiful Joe rereleases since I never got to play them. But now people who haven't played this wonderful game have no excuses.

Do you not have a PS3? God Hand is in the PS2 Classics section on PSN for 10 bucks.

Okami was always one of those games that I wanted to play but never did. Maybe I finally will (probably not).

Call me when they do a Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2 HD. Then I'll be happy.

Is the IGN logo on the cover confirmed?

Yeah, I tried it few years ago and couldn't even get through that first 15 minutes cutscene. This all Oh ahh huhu eh.. voice was one of the reason. Then I tried it again few moths later and forced myself to try the gameplay and didn't like it either. I will remember this game forever.

Amazing on ps2. Liked the idea of wii controls, worked fairly well, dodge controls were complete shit(move the nunchuk in a cardinal direction to dodge that way? Never actually worked correctly, but the game is easy and dodge not really something you had to do) but I did miss the harsher rice paper look overlay from the ps2 version. I think I might just stick to the controller for this, I don't have move anyway, though I was stoked for the wii version years ago; I think I just want this again, in hd and widescreen and am hoping the overlay makes it fully intact this time.

Posted by Andheez

Also have wanted to play this and haven't so question to those in the know. Controller or Move?

Edited by Kerned

Awesome. I've been wanting to play this for a long time. Also, did the PS2 really look that bad? It's been a long time since I've played one, and I know I'm spoiled on the glories of 1080p, but holy shit those textures. Ugh.

Posted by Redbullet685

Sadly I've never played any of the other versions, but this HD port may just make me buy it. It looks fantastic.

Posted by FelixCulpa

On my second play through with the Wii version. Such a fantastic game, looks great all HD'ed up as well.

I think it's showing what the PS2 version looks like on a 1080p television. No way the PS2 version on the correct television was that blurry.

Okami was an absolutely phenomenal game from start to finish. The 40+ hours to finish thing isn't wrong either, it's definitely that long. But it's worth it.

I never bought that whole Clover logo excuse. It seems ridiculous:

"We have no legal right to use the Clover logo in a game they were not involved with directly," said Seth Killian, Senior Community Manager at the Capcom Bulletin Board System. "We also didn't have the source to the credit movie itself, so we couldn't just use it and remove the Clover logo."

...it makes no sense at all, on so many levels, that even a junior paralegal in intellectual property law will tell you it sounds completely made up.

They cut the original credits sequence and the epilogue that was to follow.
