Once Again, It's On Like Donkey Kong

...Donkey Kong Country Returns, that is!

It's on like Donkey...wait, did I use that one already? Dammit!
It's on like Donkey...wait, did I use that one already? Dammit!
Prior to yesterday's Nintendo E3 2010 press conference, I had been harboring some free-floating curiosity as to what Nintendo accomplice Retro Studios, the team responsible for the Metroid Prime trilogy, had been up to since wrapping its last Samus Aran mission. And then, at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, I got my answer: Donkey Kong Country Returns, a sequel-slash-reboot of the platformer series that Rare produced back in the mid-1990s for the SNES. Though this does appear to be an original game, it's clear from my hands-on time with the game at Nintendo's booth that it's not doing too much meddling with that old formula.

Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, as much a fan of that monkey called Donkey as I am, I don't have much of a personal connection with the original Donkey Kong Country games, so I hope it doesn't come off as too dismissive when I say that this really, really feels a lot like the DKC games of old. The most significant differences being a few, simple controller-shaking mechanics, and the fact that the polygonal visuals are no longer prerendered, as they were on the SNES. Otherwise, it was lots of platform hopping, banana collecting, mine-cart jumping, and barrel busting.
== TEASER ==
A few things did pop out at me about Donkey Kong Country Returns. There's a good weight to the way Kong handles, and the way you shake the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to make him slam his hands against the ground to destroy objects or reveal treasures really underlines the often-underrealized brute strength of Donkey Kong. And I may be revealing more about my own personal shortcomings here than I ought to, but DKC Returns is kind of tough, and I found myself returning to the great big barrel in the sky with a certain regularity during my demo. Though, to be fair, I had just finished some quality time with the supremely easy-going Kirby's Epic Yarn, plus I was playing alongside another person who was controlling Diddy Kong, which was more of a liability than anything.

So, while it doesn't have that direct route to the nostalgic pleasure centers of my brain as it will some, I think Donkey Kong Country Returns is looking like a solidly built piece of throwback platforming action. I think the game's got a good feel to it overall, and the level of difficulty will likely appeal to the folks who do have fond memories of the original Donkey Kong Country.

Why are people excited for donkey kong country. It wasn't really that good of a platformer in the first place. It's gimmick was graphics back in the day.

Eh... it certainly doesn't seem like Nintendo really has a grasp of Retro Studio's strengths. Texans don't make side scrollers since FPSes came out.

@foodmonster: It's because a Donkey Kong game hasn't been seen in awhile. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I really enjoyed the games way back when, so I'm definitely going to give this one a shot.  One thing I'll say is that I'm getting tired of seeing Nintendo rebooting everything instead of coming up with new and interesting I.P's.  Sure, Nintendo's launched new franchises (i.e. Red Steel, No More Heroes) but I want that Nintendo charm in something brand new.

Not really. I didn't get to play the trilogy until the N64 was out and I loved them. To each their own, I guess.

I was never able to get into this game. My little brother and sister loved it, but the game came out when I was 18 and they were 8 and 10 years old. I played it a couple times, but that was it. Not really anything about this style of game that appeals to me and I suspect this "retro" version of it (which looks exactly like the game from sixteen years ago) will only appeal on a nostalgic level.

Sequel to three of the best games ever made, so this is already my most anticipated game for this holiday season. I'm so glad they're finally doing a new Donkey Kong game.

I'm glad it's hard and that it still feels like DKC. What I want to know is, how is the music?

I think it looks pretty good, I like the way Retro handled Metroid and happy to see them continue to bring back great Nintendo games.

More than any other game I feel DKCR is an indication of Nintendo dropping the ball with new IP.

I wish they just pre rendored the graphics again but just higher detail and resolution because the poligonal graphics on the Wii look like shit. Just make it roto-scoped or whatever it was in the original game. It looks alot more kid-friendly too, in the art style. I really liked the sometimes darker tone of the original game.

I'm so down.  I was pining for a new Donkey Kong Country on this very site, prior to E3.  I played a lot of DKC in the SNES era and it's one of the classics that I thoroughly enjoyed.  I've got a lot of nostalgia for those games and I'm certainly looking forward to this one.

Donkey Kong 1-3 on the SNES was far more popular in my family whilst growing up than anything Mario ever was. Looking forward to this =)

While I think the pre-rendered looked better on the SNES (this new polygonal style *shocker* doesn't look as good*) I dont want to nit pick it to much as graphics arent everything.

That being said I do hold nostalgia for this series and that trailer does indeed show some Donkey Kong Country. Let me put it this way, while I did also grow up with Mario climbing to the top of a tower trying to save a princess from Mr Kong it didnt really capture much more then a really good game of skill. DKC made it a universe with its own problems and a different look at the Kong family. I even watched the cartoon show (the early CGI oddity that it was, in the vain of Reboot) and liked it so ya, I like me some Donkey Kong Country.

Bare in mind I keep it seperate from Donkey Kong, notice I always refer to it as Donkey Kong Country =P

As much as I love them, they're in the past: they've been done. DKC3 didn' have a 'Stickerbrush Symphony' or an 'Aquatic Ambiance' track, so I hope the composer of Returns is able to create something new of a similar magnitude. Also, I hope Wise comes back, but that goes without saying.

Just because of this announcements, I went and picked back up the original DKC games on the VC, and I'm playing through them in anticipation.

If you guys go on Nintendo's E3 site, they have a video Iwata Asks for the game. Yeah, they do say nostalgia is a key factor, but some of the stuff they described, mainly the 2 player co-op, rather than the tag team based gameplay in the originals, looks like it'll be good as a sequel and step forward for the series. I'm excited.
