One of Halo Anniversary's Inoffensive Kinect Hooks Revealed

Want to switch between the visuals without hitting a button? No? Well, fine.

Switching between visual styles is as simple as clicking a button or talking to your Kinect.
Switching between visual styles is as simple as clicking a button or talking to your Kinect.

The mere mention of Kinect will cause some people to twitch. When 343 Industries and Microsoft started mentioning Halo and Kinect in the same sentence, the response was appropriately hyperbolic.

Almost immediately, the line from Microsoft was that Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary's Kinect hooks would have nothing to do with waving your hand around and shooting Covenant.

We don't know all of the Kinect features in the high-definition update, but 1UP spoke to franchise development director Frank O'Connor, who revealed one that makes some sense: switching visuals.

By saying "classic" or "remastered," you'll be able to swap between the two versions of the game.

We should know the rest of the Kinect features soon enough, sometime next month.

"We don't want to oversell it," said O'Connor. "It's not something that radically changes the gameplay; it's just another additive bonus on top of the other stuff we've added. We think of it like the 3D: something that makes the experience better, but doesn't change it."

I hope they have it on in the background of interviews so the game spazzes out constantly.

Probably yeah, I think it's just there as a bullet point. Basically if you have your Kinect on, you can use it. I imagine that there's other little things you'll be able to do for this game.

From what I'm led to believe, when the Kinect is on, it handles audio processing for voice commands as opposed to the box handling it itself.

Not trying to troll but why is this an article?

This just sounds like advertisement.

Because there are people who are interested in this information. I don't really see what makes it sound more like an ad than any other article about announced game features.

It's not really news though, it's just showing of a feature. I usually love Patrick's articles but this one seems slightly derived and unnecessary.

But then again, it is a huge release and it's something that people obviously are interested in so i digress...

Sooo... trying to explain to people what this game is when I buy it will make Kinect freak out and start swapping modes randomly, then?

I'm only half joking there. I don't have a problem with the feature or with Kinect, but it's true that whenever I'm watching a movie Kinect has a tendency to react like an overly dependant puppy and pop up a window tracking my hands whenever I reach for a drink or whatever. They had the right idea early on with giving it a codeword... I'm just not sure that "Xbox" was the right choice there.

You know what's better than dancing games? Actual real dancing! And you don't even need a Kinect for it. Plus you can do it anywhere: bedroom, living room, patio, deck, etc. The possibilities are endless!

Most of the people I know who (like myself) love Dance Central love it because they (like myself) love real dancing.
Annnd Dance Central has the benefit of people enjoying watching you dance for score and laughs.

Plus, anyone who is in charge of their household and isn't too lazy to do it can do it anywhere: bedroom, living room, patio, deck, etc. The possibilities are endless.

...okay, okay, I'll admit it. My bedroom's on the small size and it has a bed I'm not willing to move. So not endless per say.

My point exactly, you can't really do it anywhere. I've played some DC but as someone who sat in on the Harmonix panel (filled with people who give a lot of shit(s) about RB3 and DC) there were a large number of people who (like myself) can in no way, shape, or form justify getting a Kinect. Even if they (like myself) enjoy dancing.

So in other words since the Kinect features are not hand waggling, the result is the only other function the Kinect seems to do, that being accepting auto input that the headset could accept just as well...

@Kordesh: The Kinect has voice recognition hardware. The Xbox by itself does not and the the processing time that it takes to only do it software would have a negative impact on the other shit your doing, like running a game.

Also, the xbox headset is fucking garbage

I am aware the headset is in fact garbage. I'm also aware that the Kinect assists with voice recognition. My question is if End War (garbage game aside) was able to competently use voice commands via the headset, I don't see why the same couldn't be done in this case.

All the voice recognition stuff is in the kinect unit isn't it? Or am I wrong?  There has to be some sort of software on the xbox i know but sure its the kinect that recognises the input command then tells the xbox what to do.

As for this kinect feature, yeah sure why not, it doesn't harm anything, pushing a button is no harder than saying a word. Just because its there doesn't mean you have to use it.

I laugh at all you people saying "I could just press a button." With Kinect, developers can have Kinect voice commands function as another button, and use the buttons on the controller to do something else, allowing a player to do more things. The other way to increase functionality is to load the controller up more buttons. (or keep the same buttons and decrease functionality)

No two games are made equal, also what kinda developer wants to devote that kinda time working on voice recognition? It's not worth it, and only reasonable if it's a part of the hardware, which kinect provides.

Once again Microsoft makes Kinect suck and not worth $100 unless you use it as a fucking cheep 3d scanner to import models into 3d studio max or maya on your PC with buggy half done free software or hacks.

Thanks Microsoft for making this technology wasted even more than nintendo did with the wii controler.

Also fuck you microsoft I am still not buying one , that would be the dumbest move I would ever make. I can scream into a headset and get voice control for like $20 I see it done all the time you took out the fucking CPU in the kinect so the xbox cpu does 99.9% of everything anyway.

All you people complaining really need to get a life.. Its simple really, if you dont like it dont buy it or use it! I just dont understand what the complaints are for. Yes pushing a button is really simple but sometimes in the heat of battle its probably easier to say it and dont pretend like you wouldnt want to switch during moments like that.

@sephirm87: No. Developers will not decide to add a feature to their game that they previously wouldn't have because Kinect exists, they will only relegate certain functions to Kinect simply because it's there.  (Talking about non Kinect-only games of course)

If I could just say CLASS ASSAULT - while playing Call of Duty instead of going through the menus to choose it mid-match then I'd love that feature. I think these sort of commands are exactly what Kinect would be great at - alleviating having to go through menus and getting pulled out of the game.

Also being able to toggle ammo types or grenade types instead of accessing your inventory sounds great to me too.
