Ouya Nabs Games From Airtight, Minority Media

The game from Kim Swift's studio will be an exclusive, as well.

For non-backers, the Ouya console will cost you $100, but the controller itself isn't cheap--it's a whole $50 on its own.
For non-backers, the Ouya console will cost you $100, but the controller itself isn't cheap--it's a whole $50 on its own.

With just a few weeks until backers receive hardware, Android gaming device Ouya has announced Kim Swift’s Airtight Games will produce an exclusive game for Ouya, and the next game from Papo & Yo developer Minority Media is coming, as well.

There are few details on either game, especially the one from Airtight Games.

“We truly feel that this platform will give us the freedom to fully realize the funky, unique game we have in mind,” said Swift in the announcement. “Though the title will definitely appeal to core gamers in terms of skill and difficulty, it really has a completely unexpected, imaginative slant that’s totally at home on this console.”

Minority Media’s game is described as an “adventure puzzler,” and is scheduled for this fall. The term “exclusive” wasn’t branded to Minority Media’s project, which I tried to clarity with the developer.

"We are super excited but there won't be any info on the game for a while,” said the company.

That doesn’t tell us much, but if it truly was exclusive, Minority Media would have said as much.

We’ve nearly reached critical mass of Android-based gaming devices raising money on crowdfunding services, but Ouya was one of the first and easily the biggest, which also means it’s becoming a reality much sooner. To aid in drumming up developer support, Ouya has enlisted former thatgamecompany co-founder and president Kellee Santiago as head of developer relations.

“I'm looking forward to continuing my work in tilting the industry scales towards indie developers and more variety in game content,” she said on Twitter.

Santiago also said her new position would not remove her from game development

Ouya hardware will begin shipping to backers on March 28, and arrives for general populous in June.

@lordkorax: Must have purchase it with all those sick Quantum Conundrum royalties.

I get it, video games don't have many women to hold up as a shining example for design, but when will the media get over the love affair of this mediocre designer? Pretty clear Portal was a group success, not just this one person and I think there are more talented women out there that should be in the media lime light.

I Completely agree.
She doesn't seem like a bad designer, but Quantum Conundrum is mediocre, especially when compared to Portal.

@patrickklepek I'm getting caught up on some news articles from the past couple weeks.

"Ouya hardware will begin shipping to backers on March 28, and arrives for general populous in June."

"Populous" is an adjective describing something that is very populated (also a god game :P). You probably meant "populace", which is a noun that generally means "the masses".

I'm really surprised that so many members from a niche community like Giant Bomb have difficulty in understanding the Ouya. The Big Three consoles have scary amounts of overhead! Dealing with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo can be extremely expensive and challenging -- if they even give you the time of day! They make you jump through a lot of hoops!

The Ouya has the open concept of the App Store or Google Play combined with a TV and controller. "Hardcore" gamers often complain that touch-screen games are kiddy and that they can never be hardcore since they lack a proper controller. This system shouts out to indie developers looking to make console games that can be played using a controller and a TV.

Also, you can bypass the risk of needing to have a hard copy release! In essence, game developers who are skilled at making Android games, but who wish they could make hardcore games that feature more than a touch screen, now have the chance to make some really awesome low cost games, designed for controllers and TVs.

<p>&lt;p&gt;it upsets me when everyone I talk to has the same thing to say about ouya "it's only $100". First of all I don't care what anyone thinks $100 is a lot of money, regardless of the times or cost of living. Secondly when was it ok to just take that kind of money and just carelessly throw it down on something your not even sure of or want for that matter. In my opinion the ouya is useless, you want a emulator get a 1st gen Xbox and jtag it or use your pc, want to stream any current gen console will stream, even some tv's stream want indie games keep playing them on your phone. I can go on and on but you see the point, there isn't anything the ouya can do that can't be done now. Save your $100
