Patrice Desilets Isn’t With Ubisoft Anymore

The designer claims he didn’t just leave the publisher but was fired.

No Caption Provided

It’s a complicated day at Ubisoft. Assassin's Creed creative lead Patrice Desilets is no longer with Ubisoft--again. What remains a slightly open question is how that happened--again.

Kotaku reported earlier today that Desilets had left the company, and Ubisoft issued a lengthy, weirdly vague response about what happened.

“Since the acquisition, the good faith discussions between Patrice and Ubisoft aimed at aligning Patrice’s and the studio’s visions have been inconclusive,” reads part of the statement. “As a result, Patrice has left the studio. Our priorities remain with the teams already hard at work on projects in development. They are at the root of Ubisoft Montréal’s past and future successes.”

Then, Desilets issued a statement to several publications and Twitter, claiming he had been fired by Ubisoft, and was escorted out of the building by security guards. He intends to fight back against Ubisoft.

"Contrary to reports, I didn’t leave," he said. "Ubisoft fired me, and I intend to fight them vigorously for my rights, my team and my game."

Desilets originally departed from Ubisoft in 2010 as development on Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood wound down. He returned to video games in 2011 as part of THQ Montreal, where several games--1666, Underdog--were reportedly in development. Neither of these games have been shown publicly, and when THQ went kaput earlier this year, THQ Montreal became part of Ubisoft. That deal included Desilets.

Jeez, stuff like this will not make me look at Ubisoft kindly. There's just something wrong with this company.

Translation: Patrice didn't wanna do more Assassin's Creed games, and that's all they wanted him to do, so he left. I don't see how everyone didn't see this coming.

That's how I am reading this as well. I would much rather see whatever THQ Montreal was originally working on, just out of curiosity.

Sounds like there was still some bad blood from when he left the first time. I wonder if they were trying to cancel his game and move him and his team over to one of the existing franchises or potentially attempting to adapt his new game as a sequel to an existing franchise.

Or maybe its just as simple as the process that Ubisoft uses for its multi-studio games didn't fit with how Desilets made his team. From developer presentations I've seen of the Assassin's Creed franchise they have a more assembly line approach to game development which allows them to make massive games in a short period but doesn't allow for individual team members to contribute ideas during development.

Eh, if only we could get an impartial account of what happened.

Its easy to side with the one guy instead of the big company, but after all atleast ubisoft helped make sure the studio didn't have to close down with THQ.

Patrice atleast started some good franchises!

This is unfortunate. As evidenced by the first 3 Assassin's Creed games, he has talent. I'd like to see what games he would make next.

I'm curious if this is related to the critical reaction to AC3 or is more an indication of a problem with the 2014 Assassin's Creed game.

Damn it, I really wanted to see the new game he was working on. If this means anything, it means that Ubisoft is going to get that game and Patrice isn't going to be able to finish it, and he'll have to start a new project from scratch elsewhere while this game he probably slaved over comes out unattached from him and his original vision.

That really, really blows.

Ubisoft: Patrice, we'd like you to stay and help with the projects you started at THQ. Lets let bygones be bygones, what do you say?

Patrice: Sure, these are my dream projects after all. They'll be next big thing since Assassin's Creed.

*five months later*

Ubisoft: Patrice, how are things going?

Patrice: Great, just removing the DRM one of your engine coders implemented.

Ubisoft: "........................."

Patrice: Twitter- "So, I was fired today......"

Yeah...seems like that, doesn't it?

The whole thing makes Ubisoft look like a troll. Maybe they thought they'd strong arm him into barking like a dog for them, and when he refused, out came the security to escort him out the building.

What Mesoian says is correct, we should have seen this coming. But, if Ubisoft didn't expect this, then why acquire the team at all? It seems petty, but it looks like the only thing that makes sense. Ubisoft "sticking" it to Patrice.

Current rumor is that Patrice may have had some ownership stake in the IPs he was developing with THQ. Ubisoft did not want to develop any new IP it didn't own outright, and tried to negotiate Patrice into giving up his ownership. He refused, was fired and escorted out of the building.

Again, this is rumor only. I have no primary source.

Good luck to him. Seems like Ubisoft just bought the studio to get their hands on Patrice's game, which was rumored to be coming along pretty nicely. I hope the didnt do this to steal his ideas or just out of spite.

I think the big takeaway here is that Desilets is fighting to keep the rights to the game he and his team were working on. If Ubi holds onto whatever they were doing, it's a good bet that they'll crap it out in a poor form. Hopefully Desilets gets his way.

The sad thing is he will probably have to stoop down to making a by-the-numbers iOS game with the word 'Tiny' in it's title, to make some headway towards developing the game he really wants to make.

I'll listen to both sides, but the fact remains, Ubisoft OWNS the games he works on...they own the games. Unless he can prove he owns the IPs or that he was working on their projects faithfull, I don't think he has a case to do anything. If he was being openly hostile (which seems implied) to management, well I doubt that works for his side much. I mean, there is a point where you do what your boss says; or you leave with some dignity. This is not some sort of "Bartleby, the Scrivener" shit...its a real world job.

I totally could see where leaving Ubisoft and then ending up at Ubisoft is frustrating, but that's life.

They don't usually have you escorted out unless shit gets real. I would assume Patrice got kinda nasty with someone. Don't call Ubisoft the asshole until you know. Thing is we will probably never know.

Can't say I didn't see this coming but the whole 'he say, they say' thing doesn't make either side sound great. I'm sure there was a lot more behind the scenes that we don't know about. One would hope that Ubisoft didn't just let him go for no reason.

Because Black Flag would be on the home stretch dev wise at this point, but it may indicate that they were trying to drag Patrice in to right the ship with the next title.

See I think it's either that or Patrice said something along the lines of "Since you're gonna make me do AC again anyway, we're doing it the way I wanted from the start. Let's be honest, the ones made since I left haven't been nearly as good." And then they fired him.
