Peter Molyneux Exiting Lionhead Studios Following Completion of Fable: The Journey

Gaming's most overly-ambitious designer is shuffling off this Microsoft coil to work on his own new independent venture.

In an unexpected yet perhaps not altogether surprising piece of news this morning, we have learned that famed designer and notorious over-promiser Peter Molyneux will be leaving Lionhead Studios, and by proxy, Microsoft, following the completion of the studio's upcoming Kinect title, Fable: The Journey.

The news comes in a statement picked up by Kotaku, in which Molyneux expressed his deep admiration for the team while citing a desire to move on to newer pastures as the reason behind the departure.

Of course it isn't, Peter. Of course it isn't.
Of course it isn't, Peter. Of course it isn't.

"It is with mixed emotions that I made the decision to leave Microsoft and Lionhead Studios, the company that I co-founded in 1997, at the conclusion of development of Fable: The Journey," he said. "I remain extremely passionate and proud of the people, products and experiences that we created, from Black & White to Fable to our pioneering work with Milo and Kate for the Kinect platform. However, I felt the time was right to pursue a new independent venture. I'd like to thank the team at Lionhead, as well as our partners at Microsoft Studios for their support, dedication and incredible work over the years."

Molyneux's history with Lionhead dates all the way back to its formation in 1997, when he helped co-found the studio following his years at Bullfrog Productions, where he helped more or less invent the "god game" genre in Populous. His tenure at Lionhead has been marked with numerous critical and financial successes, including the aforementioned Fable franchise, as well as PC-centric titles like Black & White and The Movies.

For all his successes, many were perhaps unfortunately overshadowed by Molyneux's own reputation as something of a sideshow carnival barker, a man perhaps better at conveying a fantastical idea and selling people on it than actually making good on said idea in the end. On more than a few occasions, Molyneux promised gamers the stars with his new projects, and then proceeded to deliver them interesting video games, instead.

As the years have gone by, Molyneux and Lionhead's games have often been spoken of better in retrospect than at the time of their release. Still, Molyneux has persisted in his habit of speaking perhaps above the resources at his disposal, especially when it came to Microsoft's Kinect. His famous "Milo" demo never quite formed into that Milo and Kate game that seems all but canceled at this point, and Fable: The Journey's development cycle has had its share of bumps along the way, including the much-mocked "It's not on rails!" goof from last year's E3.

And yet, despite that perhaps deserved reputation, there's no denying that Molyneux is one of the industry's most creative and forward-thinking minds. It's difficult to imagine a game industry without Molyneux--and thankfully, we won't have to. Molyneux's new independent venture is a small start-up company he's titled 22 Cans. What is 22 Cans? We don't know yet, but it does appear that it will be rooted in gaming. Hopefully the venture is something that will well suit Molyneux's ambitious mind--or, at the very least, help rein it in a bit.

Molyneux's kookiness aside, Black and White is one of my favourite games EVER. Interested and excited to see what comes from his change of scenery.

He promised so much yet delivered so little. I enjoyed the fable games for what they were (well 1 and 2, after reading about 3's "features" I stayed away from it) but they're RPG-lite.

If ego was anger he'd be the Hulk. And if failed promises was flame, he'd be a sun.

Say what you will, Molyneux has had his hand in some of the more memorable games of my childhood with Fable, Black and White, Dungeon Keeper, and The Movies. I'm super excited to see what he can make with a smaller team and less restrictions.

Maybe they were both tired of the bullshit associated with the bigger studios (or in these cases, Microsoft and Sony themselves)? Also, sometimes it's more enjoyable to start over again, fresh, and experiment than to keep doing the plotting same ole stuff you've been doing for years and years.

I like Molyneux, I met him once and got to ask him about sex, its just that most gamers don't really seem compatible with game development talk since they are used to PR created messages about locked features. Molyneux enjoys talking about the stuff they are currently prototyping, not the stuff they've nailed down. In game development you tend to cut at least 50% of the features you've worked on, but developers will rarely talk about that stuff publicly outside of events like GDC and even then the feature might be in-development for the sequel and may be embargoed.

Oh great, more people that don't understand the concept of employment. Explained best by Mad Men:

Don Draper: It's your job. I give you money, you give me ideas.

Peggy Olson: And you never say thank you.

Don Draper: That's what the money is for!

Anyway, the dog was the best part of Fable 2. Curious to see what he does next. I just hope it isn't on facebook or ios.

I have met three people that used to work for him and I've never known anyone so hated by ex-employees in any line of work. Their feelings about his actual ability weren't great either. I remember one of them saying the only thing he added to Fable 2 was the dog yet he took all the credit.

Will be interesting to see how Lionhead do now and how 22 cans do.

Peter Molyneux makes video gaming a more interesting place to be, I'm hoping his new venture gives him the license to really go "out there" and try even more radically different things.

I'm curious to see Molyneux working with a small budget. Having AAA quantities of money at his disposal encouraged his cavalier tendencies towards unrealistic outcomes as far as his final products were concerned. If a tight budget can force him into making shrewd decisions about his projected design right from the start, perhaps it will lead to better games in the end.

Very sad to see Peter go. They may not be perfect, but the Fable games hold a special place for me. Perhaps its the English bias and those West Country accents, I don't know. But for every broken promise, Molyneux delivers something unexpected and fun in his games.

His passion and love for the industry should be admired, not mocked. Yes he is like a kid at Christmas sometimes and presents ideas that cannot be delivered buy I genuinely believe this is because HE is just too excited about what he is doing, not that he's trying to SELL us something sub-par. A true visionary...I wish him luck and I will maintain a strong interest in all his future endeavours.
