Phew, Descent WiiWare Still in Development...Wait, What?

Giant Bomb goes where other gaming sites won't dare.

Having the word "descent" in a headline yesterday squirreled the nausea-inducing Descent series into my head. It also reminded me that Interplay once tasked someone with porting Descent to WiiWare. There's been nothing on Descent for WiiWare in nearly a year, though, so I decided to ask the question all the other gaming writers of the world weren't willing to ask: what happened to Descent for WiiWare?

Turns out it's still alive at developer G1M2, who last worked on SNK Arcade Classics 0 for PSP.  

"Thank you for asking us about Descent for Wii," said a company spokesperson. "It is still in development and we are hopeful that the project will be completed soon. While it has taken longer than expected, we are hopeful that people will like the final product when it comes out. More details to come soon..."

One less mystery of the world to solve, guys.  (Nobody tell Jeff about this.)

Man I played a crapload of Descent in middle school, I have fond memories of it. I'd like to try this new one, see what they do with it.

ohh what rly!?  Damn I remember playing the original.
It didnt make me wanna puke but I did find it very disorientaining.  I musta spent hrs playing that first level and then nearly having a heart attack when youve killed the boss and you think its all over but then the alarms start and the whole building shakes as you desperately look for the exit tunnel :P

I loved Descent back in the day. It's going to look so sweet with up-rezed textures. Also, the game never made me nauseous.

If Descent uses the wiimote to control the ship movement and viewpoint, I think there'll be more than a few people hurling their lunch at their TV's, rather than their wiimotes.

@fisk0 and others looking for a new Descent.

Don't ask where/why I know this, but Volition has been wanting to do an updated Descent game for a long time. The designers out there have a deep love for the series. Unfortunately, the guys that sign the paychecks don't believe there's a market for a new Descent and would rather they use their talents rehashing Saint's Row and Red Faction over and over again.
 
So, if you REALLY want a new Descent, please direct your thoughts and comments to THQ

Are you sure THQ owns the rights for that? The most up to date information I can find is from 2008, but back then it was still Interplay who had the rights and claimed to be working on a 4th Descent title.

Descent for me is an iconic title. It just sucks this is coming out on the Wii, as I'm not much of a Wii gamer. Mind you I don't have a problem if others want to play it.

@fisk0:  I honestly don't know who owns the rights. This is "friend of a friend" information (Champaign is a small place *wink*) and I know they talk about it as if they own the property and they REALLY want to make another--well, if not Descent, then some kind of actiony space fighter deal--but whether or not the ownership stuff is theirs, well, I'm not close enough to the source to say for sure. They did do the Descent: FreeSpace stuff back before they were bought up by THQ, so they might have something under that banner, but, yeah, not sure.

That's my thought too, Decent is a game where some motion control might make it fun.  There is never a bad reason to make a Decent game.
