Pokemon Wii Probably Won't Be A "Core" Game

Home consoles just aren't portable enough for Game Freak.

Looks like that Pokémon project for the Wii won’t be an all-out Pokémon RPG similar to the handheld titles. In a recent interview with IGN, Game Freak co-founder Junichi Masuda said that he believes the core series will remain a handheld proposition for now.

“I think the Pokémon core series is always going to be with handheld hardware, in the future as well," he said. "I consider handheld hardware you can carry around with you as almost being equal to being with Pokémon, always."

Masuda went on to explain that the handheld “matches the idea of Pokemon” that Game Freak has, since users can talk to each other and transfer data whenever they’ve got a portable handy. And even if consoles were to be more connected with the world, Masuda doesn’t think the series would fare well on a device that can’t leave the TV stand. It’s just not what Pokémon is about to him.

"What I think is best for the Pokémon series is to be able to carry it in a portable device, to be able to go anywhere and have fun with people, to not be bound to any one spot.” Masuda did, however, say that it’d be nice to work on a console that was more portable, but I can’t imagine we’ll see a Nintendo console that can be taken for on-the-go play soon.

As IGN notes, Masuda’s thoughts shouldn’t be seen as a cut and dried confirmation that we won’t see a core Pokémon on the Wii, but the dude is the co-founder of the studio that puts out the core titles, so he does, definitely, have an inside track on this.

I completely agree with him. Pokemon should always remain for portables.

Edit: Holy wow. Never thought I'd get this challenge.

I think it's for the better.  Pokemon are just that, pocket monsters.  You move them to the TV and they are livimon...living room monsters, and that just can't be a good thing.

Pokemon Colosseum tried to handle this problem by eliminating most of the grind...and it still wasn't any good. This begs the question: Why are they still trying? Why can't they leave Pokemon where its comfortable? On the Gameboy Colour preferably.

I kinda liked Pokemon Colosseum. It made battling interesting with everything being a double battle and the concept of trying to catch shadow Pokemon from evil trainers was a cool mechanic that was different from the handheld games.

I want them to make an actual new Pokemon game. I'm sorry but double and triple battles aren't an actual creative update to what is still an 8-bit game in design.

I cant even comprehend how stupid people are. Its hard to believe that there hasnt been a real pokemon game for a console yet and to hear that they think there shitty unevolving (see what i did there) game formula should stay on the handheld system is simply baffling to me. The first pokemon games were AMAZING and then the second generation was good as well and depending on how old you are or what you played first, there are varying opinions on which ones are the best. That being said, every game after the first two generations has been boring trash. There hasnt been anything significant introduced to the games that makes them any more interesting and in fact, the only thing they've really been adding is more pokemon which is actually the opposite of what the games need and the only thing that should stay the same. We'll see how the next pokemon games are but from what I can tell the only place to go from here is to the consoles and their reluctance to do that is simply insane.

I see where they are coming from, but I would love to see what Game Freak could do on a larger scale. Something along the lines of a real-time battles instead of turn based combat.

@DoctorWelch: I do agree that the games need more of a significant upgrade..  but I don't understand the problem with adding more Pokemon.  The whole point of the games is capturing, training and battling.  Even if you don't like the new designs, having more variety is always a good thing.

In the original Red & Blue games almost everyone used the same few Pokemon..  Charizard, Gyarados, and so forth.  Having more just gives you more options and room to customise your team.

I also see no reason why they couldn't evolve the games on the 3DS.. but it's hardly the only game series to remain pretty much the same with each sequel.  Look at things like Call of Duty - and those are yearly games.  At least Pokemon only comes around every 3-4 years.  (not counting updates, and spin-offs)

I really wish we could get a Pokemon game that was't dragonquest and instead let you actually manually control the pokemon themselves and fight with them. Also, 3d environment where you can actually explore the world and look around in every direction. But nope.jpg

The fact that there isn't a full 3D console Pokemon game in 2011 is a tragedy. Even if it's just a game that lets you catch things for your handheld game and not have to "open the door to their heart". Hell, even if it's just a 3D remake of an old Pokemon game, that would be fine. I want the Pokemon Stadium model in a game that makes me wan to play it, not something that has no reason other than a couple of Pokemon you can transfer.

Online capabilities these days make his reason somewhat invalid. A Pokemon console MMO that played at least somewhat like the "core" games, could be amazing.

Well, if some of what Sony is suggesting for the NGP then perhaps Pokemon can live in both worlds of the console and the portable.  I know, Pokemon is a Nintendo licensed property, but why not play the game on the console and then continue that game or at least the development of the characters on a handheld?  What if you could play the catch'em and train'em parts on a 3DS but then go online through the Wii to battle other players?  Then when you're done, resynch your pokedeck to your handheld and go on with your game.  Best of both worlds.

@WinterSnowblind: My argument against adding more pokemon, besides the fact that the designs and names have started to suck and become more and more childish with every generation, is that at a certain point it's just too much. There are about...what...600 pokemon now or something, which is super insane and waaaaaay too much to keep track of and way to many pokemon to put into a single game. Then you end up with a game where you cant even capture like half of the pokemon anyway so what is even the point. Simply adding more is not a reasonable way to make the game better generation to generation and that seems to be the only thing they do.

Yes i agree that they could do something to make the game better on the 3DS but considering the technology from the first gameboy to the DS is miles apart and yet the new pokemon games are relatively the same and in fact, in some cases, worse than the original ones is proof enough for me that the chances of the 3DS leading to a more innovative and original pokemon game is very slim.

Also im not saying that other game franchises dont do this, but other game franchises dont have the obvious next step like pokemon does which is taking it to the console.

@DoctorWelch:  I do agree that they need to do more to change up the series but I don't see the problem with adding more new Pokemon.

I also don't think the designs have gotten any worse (though the names this generation are highly questionable).  Some of the new ones are really great looking..  Some of them aren't, but this was just as true with the originals.  People tend to remember the old ones more fondly because they have nostalgia with the ones from the old games.  I remember when Gold & Silver came out and people even complained about those ones.  Now they're usually considered on par with the originals.  I know many people who only got into the series more recently who see no difference between Pokemon that were introduced in Red & Blue and the ones from Diamond & Pearl.

I've been saying this very thing for a long time now. Any gamer who has played one than one Pokemon game has already built the full console version of it in their head. But we are all cursed to watch Gamefreak play it safe and only make a few small gameplay changes in every four pokemon games.

The problem is that it seems counter to what makes the Pokemon games fun, namely the collecting aspect. Since you would only see any given Pokemon once or twice you had to continually reload saves if you wanted everything. There are a whole bunch of other things that are intrinsic to the Pokemon gameplay that were lost as a result of that switch as well but I don't want this to turn into the longest post ever.

Not to mention that the levels were confusing as fuck.

All i need to say is, the money they would make for a console pokemon RPG = win. The only reason I will ever buy a Wii or nintendo console, so for the soul purpose of a Pokemon Console Version. Not the "Snap, or stadium Bs. Give us a legit pokemon game on the console and I can die happy.

Lets get realistic its 2011, the fact that we have 3DTVS, Motion sensor consoles, Larger games, improved graphics etc etc. Yet each new pokemon game really adds nothing new. It's like that 35 year old guy still living his High School Days out never looking towards his future.

@Landon: Pokemon on consoles just won't work as well. Nor will an MMO. And I'm glad they've figured that out too.

I just don't understand what the appeal is. Half the fun was being able to go anywhere, battle, and trade with your school mates or co-workers, or whatever. It's built around social gaming, and what better way to do that then by having your Pokemon with you at all times? That's why, apart from making more money, they release 2 versions. To give people a reason to trade around.

The main Pokemon games are meant for portables. That's the way they were designed since conception.

If all you really want are better graphics, then wait for the true 3DS Pokemon game. I'm certain with all that new horse power they'll have a completely different looking game.

And don't even get me started on arguing against a Pokemon MMO. I don't think there's a worse idea for a Pokemon game than that.

That's the problem though. I played through 8/10ths of Colosseum and I hated it. If the adventure game has some sort of tall grass and gyms and such instead of a stupid "snatch" mechanic, then I might be interested.

thats why it should be Black & white on Nds/3ds and Pokemon Grey on wii and they could be linkable once new friend code initive comes to 3ds and new NeShop comes out for 3ds hopefully a firmware update to the wii could make it compatible with 3ds and be able to grab stuff off of a game and slap it into the 3ds and take it on the road, they both use sd cards right, hell the dsi and dsi xl(which i own) have sd card support, so if anything they due is they should copy sony's store with a little microsoft throw in then the Nintendo cutesy type stuff...peace

Hey guys, Game Freak is not going to make the Pokemon game you've dreamed of, since they're content with making the same game they've made for the past 15+ years now, for a younger audience each time.

Surprised?
