Praise Be to Bethesda: Skyrim Will Use Steamworks

The next Elder Scrolls epic will deeply integrate with Steam.

If you close your eyes, you can pretend you're playing Skyrim right now. Don't open them.
If you close your eyes, you can pretend you're playing Skyrim right now. Don't open them.

There's much more to Steam than a digital distribution platform. Some developers chose to engage with Steam on a deeper level by incorporating Valve's Steamworks development platform, which allows for Steam to fully integrate with the game.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be the latest game to take advantage of Steamworks, Bethesda Game Studios revealed today over Twitter. And lo, there was much rejoicing amongst PC gamers.

There are several advantages to leveraging Steamworks, whether it's integrated voice communication and Steam Cloud support to accessing anti-cheating mechanisms and player authentication tools. That might sound like a bunch of gobbledygook if you've never played a game with Steamworks, but in short, it makes the user experience a hell of a lot better.

Now, if only I had a PC capable of running Skyrim. I should add that to my wedding registry...

@Xshinobi: Yes thank you I feel the same way I don't see the big deal with Steam just an annoying application you have to load up to play and when games don't have them the Valve/Steam fanboys flip out.Besides what's the point of Steam?Especially during playing with all those annoying messages if you have friends. Now that I think about it Steam just seems like a way PC players can get together like Xbox Live and PSN.

Add another Skyrim-capable PC to the registry and send it to me. Render unto VGK that which is VGK's.

"Anti-cheating mechanisms"? Gross. I thought the whole point of playing Bethesda games on PC was to break them and make them way more fun?

Yes it is entitlement. Especially since everyone knows you never really own a game, just purchased a license to run them. It's your entitlement issues that make you think you have the right to own everything.

Glad Bethesda ditched GFWL. It made Fallout: New Vegas much easier to patch than Fallout 3 was.

Actually, I don't listen to the Bombcast. I don't know how the hell to listen to podcasts. I've tried, and it's always either been "waiting on this page like it's a video sucks", or "browsing the Internet and doing other stuff forces me to half-listen to it, not doing the Bombcast justice."

EULA or not, I know that if I buy a physical disc unbound to an online service, the only way the publisher can take it from me is by kicking down my door and taking it.  On Steam or other client-based services, the publisher needs only flip a switch.

Sorry I might wanna play Skyrim in 10-15 years.  Didn't know that offended you.

1998: Put disc in computer, install game, play game -> crash. Search for latest patch, let me see I have the Dutch version but that is the International version but I have the later gold version of the game so I should get this patch I think... -> Play.

2011: Download game from Steam, install game, play.

I have a copy of Beyond Good & Evil, the disc is so scratched that it won't play anymore. I also have a copy on Steam. No problems.

Above reasons are part of why I love Steam. Now if you don't like Steam that's your choice. I want to play my games in the easiest way fashionable. Steam provides.

@CaLe:  This.   Its not really that expensive to buy a decent rig these days.  I bought the one I'm using right now for $700 off Newegg and it has a 4GB ram, 2.8 Ghz processor and Radeon HD 5570 Video card and its pretty much can run everything out there at max settings outside of  the high end DX11 stuff.
Yes, but is it stable? Does it crash on you often? Does it run cool enough so that long-term use is guaranteed? Will it actually last longer than 2 or 3 years before it breaks down?

I'm asking this because I'm wondering if you realize the costs of maintaining a good pc on top of the initial price of purchasing one.

I dont want this... Having steamworks drm is a bad thing to me, you pay to really just "borrow" access to the game that valve can take away at anytime. :( if this kind of drm was from any other company other than valve people would be flipping shits

@Nettacki: I've had zero issues so far outside of a minor issue where shockwave player  plugin for chrome will crash once in a while everything else is pretty smooth.   It does run pretty cool.  The only game that really  makes it sweat a bit is Civ 5.     I'm pretty confident in my purchase.

The problem isn't so much taking the game data as taking away the validation.  I'd have no trouble if it weren't for the client.  Remember a few years back when a huge storm in their area knocked out Steam servers and rendered Steam unusable for a day?  A day isn't a big deal, but it leads one to believe that they can indeed take your ability to USE the game away should they so desire.

They could take away your ability to launch the game through Steam, I suppose, but it would be easy to find a workaround so long as the game isn't hosted entirely on the company's servers (like, say, an MMO, but even then people work to launch their own MMO servers). Pirated copies of Steamworks games being available show this it's pretty easy to launch a Steamworks game outside of Steam.

There may very well be a day where you can't play a single player game ten years down the line because a company's shut off its servers and there's no workaround, but Steamworks isn't the program to do it, and Skyrim isn't going to be that game.

Though Steam does have an offline mode, too. It works like shit but it's... uh.... 'there'.

Guess there's that.  Wouldn't be the first time PC gamers torrented them some abandonware.

And yeah, Steam's offline mode is pretty shit.  It's amazing I have to block Steam in my firewall to use it.

None of the examples Patrick listed, except for cloud support, would even be used in Skyrim anyway since it's entirely singleplayer. Achievements and DRM are the only other things Steamworks could really offer for this game.

It's really awesome to see Bethesda/id/Zenimax embracing Steam instead of crying about Valve's Terms of Service. I thought the Quakecon sale was awesome because I finally got Brink for the price I wanted to pay! Bethesda recently added cloud saves to several of their older Steam games which I found out about when I logged into Steam last week and watched my Oblivion and Fallout 3 save games upload to the cloud. Very cool. Once I find out how Steam will work with RAGE, I'm sure I'll happily pay Zenimax more $$ than I'm paying any other publisher this year.

I don't get how most of that would be relevant to a TES game. I'm slightly sceptic becuase I'm not that big of a Steam fan but that's just preference and neither here nor there. But still: why would I rejoice about that when it has been in New Vegas to begin with as others have already said?

I think some ppl will be pissed off if they have to be hooked into
Steam in order to play the game (no playing it on an airplane or
remote, no-Internet location, for instance).  I've had quite a few
friends who aren't big fans of Steam & this is the reason they
always give me about why they hate it.   I don't know if this
development library is part of that, but if it is, there are bound
to be groans.

Barring people who live in places where they have bad internet because everybody is too afraid of being eaten by bears, how many people don't have access to a reliable internet connection? Is the really that big of an issue, or are people unhappy because it's DRM?
Yes, Steam is DRM, but it's the best-implemented and least troublesome solution for end users.

Dealbreaker.
