Project Natal To Be Named 'Wave' At E3?

I think "water" when I hear "wave," not "motion-tracking hardware."

On the heels of a possible price outing by Edge's infamous source, Now Gamer believes it knows the official name of Project Natal. According to its own source "close to Microsoft," the motion-tracking device will be dubbed "Wave" at an unspecified "event in Los Angeles." This could mean we'll hear the name at Cirque de Soleil-accompanied and televised E3 event on June 15 at 3:30 PM EDT, or the sure-to-be equally rousing and also televised Microsoft press event on the 14 at 1:30 PM EDT.

If the rumor proves true, Microsoft will have a product whose name will directly clash with another Microsoft creation, its Microsoft Wave website--a page that is dedicated announcing new developments and products from the company, according to a blurb on the Wave webpage.

It's easy enough to abandon or rename a website. But the fact that Wave is a thing that Microsoft has already used should be enough to convince you to take this rumor as it is: a rumor. We'll learn the skinny soon enough, although, I privately (now publicly) wonder if the Natal name is really going anywhere. The non-enthusiast press has already introduced the world to the Natal via its long-running project name. The live demonstration on Jimmy Fallon probably didn't help either.

Sounds interesting...

They should just leave it as Natal. I like it better then Wave.

Posted by LiquidPrince

$150? Who's gonna but it at that price point...?

Posted by Scooper

If it's this doubted to be true and said to be a rumor many times then why bother posting it.

Posted by Phished0ne

They probably will rename it, companies always feel the need to change from project names to product names...this whole time MS has called it "Project Natal"  and the press started just calling it "Natal". "Wave" may be a red herring, but i would bet top dollar the name will change in some way shape or form.

That thing doesnt have many opportunities honestly. No "hardcore" games are going to be using that. Maybe in a year or two developers will find new and interesting ways to incorporate that into the game. I think the problem is that their trying to take the standard controller away when they should be figuring out how to combine them. FOr example if your playing the new Halo game you could used the gesture motions to look around or maybe throw/catch a grenade while your still using the controller to move around. That frees up some buttons and an analog stick for other functions.

Wasn't the Playstation Move going to be called Playstation Wave? And when that was said to be a rumor everyone said that was a crappy name? Am I just making that up?

Posted by JerkFace

I don't really have a problem with the Natal moniker, but it is the absolute opposite of catchy product names.  People don't even know if they're pronouncing it correctly, half the time.  I feel like there has to be a better name to call this slick technology they're going to release.

Posted by Kowalski

It's better than Wii, that's for sure.
Wave is a stupid name and very uninventive, I hope it's just internet rumourmill stuff.

Posted by TheHBK

Well Buff Brad, I would not get too attached to the Natal name or let how long its been in use determine whether or not it can get a new name.  Look at Nintendo, they had a great thing going with the Revolution then fucked it up with the Wii.  But it didnt matter that we called it the revolution for so long.
The only one known to do it at all is Sony.  Massive Action Game anyone?
Posted by Evilsbane

Wave? Bleh... that isn't any better.

Posted by Phished0ne
@crono11: I know it was named "Playstation Arc" for a while but i cant remember if wave was a rumored name for it too.
Posted by dudeglove

Dude, the name "Natal" itself is bad enough, though it seems everyone now just accepts the creepy image-inducing nature of it. Wave is, well, I guess pragmatic, as you are going to be waving at the thing the whole damn time.

I just want to say "fuck you" to Milo.

Posted by OmegaPirate

Probably renaming it so they can charge a bit more and forget about that 'Natal was gonna be $50' stuff

Natal? whats natal? This is our new thing -Wave - how much? why $150 since you ask!!

Posted by CyleMoore

Even stupider than the Move name.

Posted by Apathylad

The problem with "Wave" is that is sounds waaaay too similar to "Move". Do they really want to give the impression that these motion accessories are interchangeable? Project Natal has sticking around for so long, it seems silly to change the name at this point in its marketing.

Nope. No. That name does not work for me.

wave good bye to that name.

Edited by LincoIn

I like it. Although it needs some damn good games to justify the price, wasn't in the least bit interested in the crap last year at E3.

Posted by Pandasaurus

Putting a verb in the title of your product is dumb, i'm just gonna straight up say it

Posted by PLWolf

I think Easy Listening Radio Station when i think of "The Wave" Not this. Silly Microsoft.

Bidding a fond farewell to $150.

At some point it was reported that the technology behind Natal has problems detecting the movement of people with dark skin colors because of how it works. You can find a ton of articles just googling natal and black people.

I figured 'Natal' would become 'Natural'.

Posted by Venatio

Oh come on, just name it Natal, that sounds cool, Wave just sounds generic and crappy

Posted by xMP44x

I'm not so sure that calling it Wave is the best idea. When I think of Wave, I think of Google Wave, which went down faster than a lead balloon. Natal is a name that we're all already familiar with, and it's a name that is unique and catchy. If someone is going to get their mother or wife to get them the Project Natal product, and they don't know they're looking for 'Microsoft Wave' or whatever it's called, it's going to cause some confusion. Regardless, I won't be getting it despite the name coming on the box, in all likelihood.

I just noticed something. I said that someone might send their mother or wife out to get them the Natal stuff. My bad... I meant that they're going to get them to go out and get them the next Call of Duty. I don't think Natal is going to do that well.

After all the heat Sony got for the Move, oh dear.

Posted by MannAlive

Wave sounds way too much like Move.  They should really be careful about that.  You want to keep a clear branding message.

Posted by Zidd

They have been calling it natal for so long they might as well keep calling it that.

Posted by fwylo

It will stay with Natal, just like they stayed with Xbox

They didn't 'stay' with Xbox, the Direct-X Box was evolved to Xbox overtime. Going on that, Natal should evolve to something also if not adopt a new name. I have not witty evolution of Natal sadly, Wave doesn't really describe anything about the product but then again neither does natal... or google.
Edited by Binman88

Cool, makes me think of the PlayStation Move.

Posted by Raven_Sword

lol, 150? and people were bitchin about Moves price.
Posted by Meteora
@Zen313: That's the thing, it isn't marketed towards hardcore gamer. Its marketed towards casual players, adults, grandparents and new gamers who have never held or had any luck with a controller.

Also please leave it as Natal, Microsoft. Wave sounds pretty dumb.
Posted by TotalEklypse

waving your arms and legs around like a retard. makes sense.

these people are smoking crack.

Posted by Jayzilla

this will be cool if i can throw a grenade by doing a throwing motion. all the games are like wii games though thus far. why not just buy a wii?

Posted by Rhaknar

Whatever it ends up being called, its better than Natal. Which means Christmas in Portuguese. So Microsoft Christmas >_>

Posted by get2sammyb

Playstation Move. XBOX Wave. Nintendo Wii. So confusing...

Posted by wwfundertaker

I would like to buy a wave, then the store clerk starts waving.

@Apathylad: Typical of Microsoft's console business.  Remember when they tried to sound like both the Playstation 3 and Wii by naming their console "360"?  Though this might be a little worse (if it's true) since wasn't "Wave" rumored to be the name for Sony's Sexaxis Motion Wand... err... Playstation Move?

$150 for a gimmicky motion controller that hasn't even proven it's worth? <.<;

Edited by freecajunlove
@hpv: Didn't 360 get announced before the Wii? and the Playstation motion controller was rumored to be called "Arc," which is like Microsoft's line of keyboards and mice.

You are very misinformed.

EDIT: Upon reading your comment again, I realized you might be being sarcastic. If you were, I apologize. If your weren't, the 360 was released 6 months before the Wii was even announced..
