Project Natal To Launch At $150?

If true, the future of gaming seems sorta cheap.

Sources and financial figureheads have been trying to peg the price of Microsoft's Project Natal since its reveal without a consensus. I've heard $50 more than once, $80 a couple of times, and beyond $200 before the chip removal. And while I dislike this kind this kind of financial guesswork, the latest rumor on Natal's price--this close to E3 mind you--seems a bit more solid: Natal may cost $150 at launch.

Project Natal
Project Natal

This rumor is brought to you by Edge and its "trusted source" who successfully stole Cliff Bleszinski's Gears of War 3 debut thunder shortly before his appearance on Jimmy Fallon's TV show.

The source says while a standalone Natal unit will be $150, a bundled unit will only cost $299. The source believes Microsoft will put Natal alongside a harddrive-less Xbox Live Arcade console at this reduced priced. And allegedly, we should expect Natal this October 26th, although the date may shift. Previous reports, mind you, have stated Natal would hit in November and December.

"Microsoft expects to sell millions and millions of Natal units in its first year on the market so you can expect the software launch line-up to target non-traditional gamers,” the source told Edge, almost breaking into corporate talk. “A major marketing campaign will also play a key role in attracting and educating the expanded audience about Xbox 360’s controller-free revolution.”

You know, predicting the price of upcoming hardware is like a bad game. Bad games don't have redeeming qualities; the characters are stiff, the mechanics are all sorts of busted, and design often slips manically from whatever momentary standards the game desperately tries to grasp onto. See: Damnation. See also: Things on Wheels. There's no point in taking stabs at hardware prices before the hardware is even finalized, even if you're Michael Pachter. At the end of the day, as consumers, we don't really care until the device is on store shelves.

No Caption Provided

Besides, I get the sense that no one, other than a very select few corporate types who would never speak to the media, knew what was going on with Natal's price. Prediction, then, was just guesswork based on previous price points on loosely related hardware. That's pretty shaky.

Following up, Edge received the standard, and understandable, Microsoft non-response to "rumors and speculation." The price is supposedly going to be revealed at E3, which makes more sense than the device's supposed price tag. Microsoft has invited press to a world premiere event on June 15th. A media briefing will accompany this on June 14th. The media briefing will be considerably more boring considering Cirque de Soleil won't be performing live.

But this price talk doesn't really matter, does it? Those who want the Minority Report dashboard experience and want to jump around smacking pretend balls with their heads will buy it regardless. Those who know they don't want it, probably won't want it. See: the Wii Motion Plus. See Also: the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak.

If Natal is 150 at launch then it is DOA. I'm not saying its a 1:1 but i think 150.00 was what the 32 X cost back in the day and we all know how that worked out.

I don't see how it will bring in the casual gamers at $150.

It's kind of hard to judge a price point because we don't really know exactly what Natal is capable of. Microsoft has done a lot of talking about Natal but not a whole lot of showing, besides E3 last year with Milo and the other tech demos. We still don't really know what this does for real games.

Next, you should talk about how Mario 64 was just another Mario game. "
You're comparing a game proven to change the foundations of platform game design to a camera with literally zero interesting looking applications as it stands.

Next, you should talk about how HD-DVD was just another media platform.

One of those things is 2D and the other has 3D capabilities, saying they are the same thing is incorrect just like if someone said it was just another Mario. Again, not comparing Natal to Mario 64(lol), I'm saying both statements are wrong.

That extra dimension is meaningless if it's not used properly, and if it's not used properly like their lineup of games and demos they've shown would suggest, it is just another 2d camera that happens to be able to play boring games.

$150 USD would equate to something a lot then what I would be paying for it in Aussie dollars and I don't think I would even pay 150 for it in our money. I intend to sit tight and wait for the games to come out because I have no intention on forking out that kind of cash to play WiiSports on my Xbox.

How about this: make a console that can do 1080p at 60fps, with more polygons on screen than before.  Throw in mouse support.  Motion control is demented.

80 bucks and maybe they would have had me but no unless they BLOW ME THE FUCK AWAY at E3 they can have their camera, and Sony can keep their Wii Wanna-be. Both of them need to quit with this bullshit or show us something worthwhile.

I fail to see how $150 is cheap.  For $50 more you can buy the console it self.  Talk about a failure on Microsoft's part.

When Michael Pachter was talkin' $50, I was interested.  When rumors surfaced closer to a full game price, I was still open.  At $150 I am completely closed off.  I better be able to virtually feel up the DOA girls for that price, and since I doubt that's going to be a selling feature, I'm going to have to take a pass on Natal until it comes down to something more reasonable.  And it will.  If it starts at $150, then Microsoft has wiggle room to drop the price and make us all think we are getting at bargain at $99 next year.  I can wait until Natal is cheap and hopefully by then there will be more available for the device than Wii-clone games.  Until then, let's see if Sony's Move will be priced more sensibly.  I doubt it, but stranger things have happened.

$150 is a HUGE mistake. $100 is iffy still. This needs to come in around $89 or less if they expect to sell millions and keep the developers coming back for more than a test run.

Come now. The N64 expansion pack was used far more than the Wii motion plus is being used now. I can name three significant games that support the WMP off the top of my head (Wii Sports Resort and... Red Steel 2? Oh, and Tiger Woods, I guess).

I can name 3 games that required the Expansion pack (DK64, Perfect Dark, Majora's Mask) and a few more that supported it (Resident Evil 2. Rouge Squadron). That's... 5! And those were some of the N64's better games. Plus it was already packed in, and you didn't need to buy more than one, so I consider the comparison less than great.

Now if we talked about the wii speak, or Rob the Robot. Or the Controller Pack. Or the GBA to Gamecube link cable. Or the E Reader. Or the Super Scope. You get the idea.

Someone on Kotaku commented that what if they're just throwing out the 150 price point, so that when the 100 dollar price point is shown people will perceive it as a bargain.  I'm willing to get behind that theory.

Agreed, though I guess they definitely doing this because many of the Wii audience only purchased the console for novelty purposes, and have not since purchased any games. They want to make sure that it can move games before they think about minimizing the initial 'profit' margin.

if natal ends up being as cool as they are making it look, then $150 isn't really that bad of a deal, because unlike the other 2 companies' motion controllers, you wouldn't have to buy more than one of them to accommodate multiple players, nor would you need add-ons like wii motion plus or the nunchuk.
but hey, even so, here's hoping the rumor's not true and it's going to launch at less than $100, because that would really kick ass.

But I will say Under $100 and I WILL buy it,   Over $100 and they can fuck themselves since I'll never use the damn thing anyway.

$150 standalone, $300 bundle with console

Would be perfect. $150 isn't bad. People who bitch about the price fail to realize that MS charges $50 for controllers, and nintendo makes you buy a wiimote and nunchuck separate, also wii motion+

For less than the price of 3 games you can get a natal...and if they bundle each natal with a game, even if it's a shitty tech demo mini game collection it still isn't a bad deal.

I have to say that I think if it's a 150 dollars than it will fail but I have felt that it would fail since hearing about it, I don't have any faith that it will do anything other than flop especially since they removed the chip.

I guess we will see though.

Not very interested. Maybe it's just me, but playing a video game without a controller just isn't appealing to me. Honestly, this kinda reminds me of the EyeToy.

More interested in Move for the PS3.
