Prototype 2 Will Probably Be Announced At The VGAs

A new viral website is showing Prototype footage in its teaser trailer.

A couple of games will be announced for the first time at Spike TV's Video Game Awards show. That's a given. But what game are we almost certain we'll see unveiled at the show? A follow-up to Radical Entertainment's open-world title Prototype seems like a really safe bet.

Viral website Murder Your Maker has been connected with the VGAs for some time, with many viewers of it theorizing that the bald man on the page is Alex Mercer, the bald, jacket-wearing protagonist of the original Prototype. Now, the site has a video teaser that features footage from Prototype, all but confirming that a Murder Your Maker is a Prototype 2 hype site and that follow-up will be announced at the VGAs.

Murder Your Maker has also been connected with a set of three teaser images an unknown developer has been splicing into commercials for the 2010 VGAs. The first two of these images are vague and could be viewed as a tease for any number of zombie games like Resident Evil or Left 4 Dead. However, the most recent third image--which prominently features a picture of a child and a soldier with the accompanying text "don't ever leave the green zone"--is an obvious Prototype reference. If you remember, most soldier-controller areas in the original Prototype were considered "safe zones" in a city rapidly becoming infected with a virus.

Alas, we can't be 100 percent sure Prototype 2 will be announced at the rewards show. Activision hasn't said anything yet and neither has Radical Entertainment, apparently. Like you, we'll have to wait until the VGAs air on December 11 to know for sure. But, really, c'mon

Seems like I'm the only one who thought it was an extremely underrated game, I fucking loved the shit out of it, played that game for months, I even made videos and put it up on my youtube channel, which I won't shamelessly plug.

Prototype had a lot of flaws, and it definitely wasn't a looker. But, I still really enjoyed the game and I think it's great that they're getting a second chance to polish up the concept for a sequel.

Haters gonna hate I suppose...

I'm excited to see what they can do with a sequel. There is a lot of potential if they polish it up and refine some of the mechanics. Prototype seems like a game people spent too much time complaining about rather than actually playing it. Granted, it wasn't perfect, but it had some really fun elements (IMO ofcourse).

Eff that.

It wasn't just fun.

It was good. Unapologetically good. Better designed than Infamous top to bottom. Better interface, better contextual awareness, more ambitious, with better enemy AI. Just. Better.

Buuuut worse looking. Which I guess is what matters.

So here's to them having improved the graphics engine, maybe.

To this day, Protoype is together with Dead Rising one of the few games that went "screw that" and transcended last-gen design to use processing power horizontally to provide a bigger experience, rather than polishing the same amount of graphics and physics for another iteration of the same design. It was misunderstood and it truly deserves another shot at getting a proper release without getting bogged down in comparisons with another vaguely similar game.

I liked the premise of Prototype and the ability to go anywhere and do anything it had over infamous, but it lacked the polish and precision infamous had as well as a much more convoluted story.  Here's hoping the sequel will do a little more storytelling and a lot less side-questing.

Wrong, sir. Wrong. Prototype was ugly, the enemy AI was overly agressive, boss fights took upwards of 40 minutes, collecting orbs was a waste of time because they didn't even POP IN until you were close to them.

Prototype tried to hide it's shame behind "YOU CAN KILL THESE INFECTED PEOPLE WITH BLADE ARMS!!!", which, I agree, did work for a while, but anyone with half a brain would know that Infamous was a clearly better game when those two came out.

Though I do agree with you, Prototype had cool ideas, it wasn't $60 worth of cool ideas, but I would like to see if they don't screw up the sequel.

I played on PC with a 360 controller, the game looked fine. Great even at times, when you considered how much stuff was going on at once. The pop in issue was also non-existent on PC.

There was something weird about the game.  For instance,
you couldn't walk around normally without pushing everybody
out of the way & causing a scene.  Violence against civilians was
monstrous (but you're the "good guy?").  It was a bit ridiculous. Some
of the combat missions were incredibly repetitive.  I got the game
for cheap & spent many hours playing it, but after a bit, I just found
it to be pretty dull & wasn't even interested in seeing how it ended.

They also cut the co-op feature which didn't help the game, making
it a lonely solo affair.  One could be playing far better solo games
such as Dragon Age, Mass Effect, or Fallout which give a better
person-to-game connect for the solo traveller.  I think I ended up
dumping Prototype to go back & play Left 4 Dead 1 for a bit (then
moved to replay ME1 & start Dragon Age).

The Xbox version wasn't so hot. The game made me mad a few times with the amount of fog the city had. Now that I have a PC that can actually run it, maybe I'll pick it up for that if what you say is true.

I will totally play a sequel in which they fix the specific problems I had with the first one.

Well, part of the issue may be your misconception that you were supposed to be the "good guy". That is plainly not true, the game makes it pretty clear that you are not any kind of good guy, you are just trying to survive and figure shit out, whatever it takes. I mean, you absorb civilians for health, run them over, etc. You are definitely not a good guy (especially with what you find out at the end of the story)

That being said, sure, yea, the missions were repetitive, the world wasn't interesting. But just running around wrecking shit with awesome powers is simply a whole lot of fun, and that part of the game worked well. The story wasn't too bad either.

Prototype was a LOT of fun. Those who refused to enjoy it must have had some sort of mental block in place, like when BF2 fundamentalists found out about BF2142. Dead in the water without even being given a chance.

Prototype was every bit as good as Assassins Creed 1. Yeah, I fucking said it. Here's hoping they pull an Assassins Creed 2 with the Prototype sequel.

But yeah the bosses were total trash.

"

Wait, the AI on Prototype was overly aggressive? I mean, that was precisely my big gripe with Infamous that wasn't in Prototype. Infamous had unlimited aggro and loads of sniper-class enemies that could accurately hit you from several blocks away. One of the reasons I liked Prototype was that, while enemy attack was relentless, it did two things right: it gave you enough power to take them on at all times and it stopped after a while (you could disguise yourself or break line of sight to stop them from chasing you or you could keep fighting until the enemies ultimately stopped coming). I actually killed myself before starting missions in Infamous just to clear the tail of enemies that had entered the mission with me because they were chasing me across town, and this was only after a few times when I started a mission and halfway through it a dozen guys that had apparently been following my scent, because I had broken line of sight ages ago, showed up and gang-raped me.

As for collectibles, the orbs were for the obsessive only and they did have some issues with pop-in, but Prototype very cleverly introduced dynamic collectibles that were spawned near you both in missions or out. It was a great feeling to be in the middle of a mission and have the game procedurally provide a side objective. There was something really satisfying in fighting a bunch of monsters only to go "hold on a minute", jump to street level, consume the collectible human and jump back into the fray. It was always a very comic book-y moment, you know, when some random bystander gets in the way and the hero needs to address that in the middle of a fight with the supervillain?

But the best parts of Prototype were the scope and how well it kept up with the pace on both the short and long range. That was directly lifted from Hulk: UD and it still worked like a charm. Lock on was great, and since Mercer would just go when the R button was held, you could be focusing on an enemy with the camera turned all the way back and still know that you wouldn't hit a dead end. He'd jump over cars, knock stuff out of the way and climb buildings without you needing to steer him, so you had your focus to do stuff like grab projectiles, get combos or plan escape routes. Then you release the trigger and you move like in a normal game for normal navigation and fine control. It was a great system that people didn't give it enough credit for.

Compare to Infamous' overly magnetic climb controls, where climbing down a building was always an exercise in frustration, made worse by the fact that five or six people would be shooting at you at all times. Cole would grab at tiny things and stick to poles and lights when all you wanted was to get somewhere fast. Until the ground slam and the glide moves were unlocked allowing you to actually ignore holding points the game was borderline broken, and even then it was hard to control where you were making things harder than they needed to be. It didn't manage transitions nearly as well between superpowered navigation and close quarters combat and it schizophrenically alternated between being a fairly standard cover based shooter and letting you zip around power lines and train tracks, with no way to do both at a time or any middle ground.

I think there is very little to improve on Prototype other than coming up with a better story, improving the graphics and adding some variety to the side missions. I didn't find bosses too annoying, but there was clearly room for improvement (as in, Hulk had some AWESOME boss fights:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1P2xwiG99XM&feature=related).

Anyway, I've made my case. I have more to say about both games but I'm not going to wall-of-text you to death if you're not willing to discuss these further. They were a great example of two differnt takes on the same concept, though, and I never liked how things went to the side of style over substance eventually. Like I said, I'm glad Prototype gets another shot.

Really was burnt by all the faults of the first game. Missions were stupid, enemies were bad boss battles, the fact when your stronger it was HARDER for you to control yourself etc etc etc. The concept was cool but actual execution was junk.

Well, I managed to get a lot more than 5 seconds out of it =P. In any case, while I do agree that Infamous is a better game, esp in terms of the narrative, structure, and world, I found the combat and traversal in prototype to be more fun than Infamous.

In any case, this game has the potential to be good. If they can improve the narrative and especially the world, make it more interesting and not so bland, while keeping the same cool style of combat and powers, then it could be great.

I'll never understand 'sense of being a badass'.  Playing games for power fantasies and escapism just don't make sense to me.

I liked Infamous because the traversal felt rewarding, using the powers felt rewarding, completing missions felt rewarding.  In Prototype the traversal felt arduous every time you had to cross half the map of square blocks, the powers were essentially meaningless because there was no tactical reason to use any except the one that worked in every situation, and fighting anything was either stupid easy or an aggravating process that left you tense and angry by the end.

Why the fuck are people still doing Prototype vs InFamous arguments when they are very different games that do different things?

And people just posting about how much Prototype sucks by replying to tell people their wrong about them liking the game and thinking its good is getting tired.

I've beaten Prototype twice, and I need to once again for that last achievement. After playing a substancial amount of this game I know it is not very good, but not horrible either. I trust this team to make the Prototype game we deserve in all its awesomness. Which, to me, means not another game like those Hulk games they made which are basically the SAME as Prototype in every single way besides art. A new game completely.

Also Prototype 2 = Infamous 2 Nah, jk lol.

If you're talking narrative wise, I'm too old to be impressed by power fantasies.  No, I understand that I'm controlling a story about a person, and anything they do is them playing a role.  I don't feel like a badass watching Alex Mercer karate kick helicopters any more than I do watching the T-101 Terminator reload that shotgun.

If you're talking gameplay, It's appealing when you accomplish something, simply pressing right trigger and A to make everything on the screen die doesn't make me feel like a badass, it makes me feel like I'm capable of pressing RT+A.  It doesn't matter how large the thing is on screen if it has no weight.  And things have weight by requiring you to gain familiarity with and then master some intuitive actions.  Games where you fight enemies by making the AI bug out and then using the same power for every encounter do not make me feel like I'm awesome.

I gotta agree. I mean this was my biggest purchase regret of last year. The story was uninteresting, the characters were unlikable and cardboard cutouts, and the gameplay was unsatisfying and felt shoddy.  I'm sure there will be arguements, but I just didn't think this was a good game.

I mean, I kind of understand the power fantasy thing, but it's easy to create a power fantasy. It's hard to create an engrossing story with characters who you identify with.

I really liked Prototype but it got very repeptitive and boring after awhile. Hopefully they add more stuff to do in the sequel.

First game was a fair bit of fun, started to get a bit repetitive though, so hopefully the second one can expand on that. What's the bet it'll have some bonus zombie mode though >.<

As long as I can grab a person, run up at 86 story building, throw them off , hit another building and fall to the ground. then I'm A OK with this game.

I'm for it, if only for the sake of murdering thousands of civilians again.

Ah yeah, I forgot. They don't agree with you, so they must be wrong.
