PS Plus for Vita on November 19 With Tons of Games

Sony making a full court press with its upcoming 2.0 firmware update.

Gravity Rush is not a reason to buy a Vita on it's own, but if you already have Plus? Well, damn.
Gravity Rush is not a reason to buy a Vita on it's own, but if you already have Plus? Well, damn.

Sony finally got around to announcing the inevitable move of PlayStation Plus onto Vita earlier this year, and it’ll finally go live on November 19 with a slew of free games to entice people onto it.

Those games, increasingly a huge incentive to pay up for Plus, are nothing to sniff at, either:

The arrival of Plus on Sony’s portable comes alongside its big 2.0 firmware update, which introduces a slew of new features. The full list, courtesy of Sony:

  • Send, read email from a Vita
  • Wirelessly transfer content between a Vita and PC, browse folders on PS3/PC to copy them to a Vita
  • Ability to assign controller buttons to touchscreen, rear touch pad and buttons "with select games," and a "custom screen mode" to adjust screen sizes
  • Option to tweet web addresses

Plus is $17.99 for three months, and $49.99 for a full year. When and if your Plus subscription lapses, the free games you acquired during that time are no longer playable. If your account is activated again, they’ll come back online.

So heres a question about the free games. Are the free games advertised in the current deal free to play still once NEW games are added? Like, just recently ive seen inFamous 2 and DD Neon as free, but when PS changes the deal and switches to a NEW set of free games, can I still play inFamous and DD, or is it only while they are the current deal?

As long as you "purchased" them by activating them on the Playstation Store when they are free you can play them as long as you are a Playstation Plus subscriber. For example when Stacking came out on PSN it was free for PS+. Since I was a PS+ member at the time and activated Stacking it is always tied to my PSN account so I can play and redownload it as long as I am a PS+ member no matter if the offer has expired or not.

So I just have a quick follow up to that - do the games run without an internet connection? Or do you have to be logged into PSN for it to work? I'm asking how it works on PS3 as I assume the method will carry over ... and make the wifi PS Vita a tad annoying while travelling.

No you don't have to be online.

CanI hoard these games on my PS+ PS3 before I get my Vita and then transfer them over later?

Yep, they confirmed that on the Playstation blog. You can add them to your Download list on the PS3, sit on them for a year or two (as long as your subscription doesn't lapse), then actually download the full games when you have a Vita to put them on.

They are not fucking around with this initial offering. I am really set to pick up a Black Friday bundle now.

That's friggin' great then!

You just can't compare PS+ to Live at all - never could, and never will. My original X360 gathers more and more dust as months go by...

Sony have a guaranteed way to keep me subscribing as long as its only $50-70 per annum for a long long time... and even if worst come to worst and the service is stopped somehow... the games will be so cheap by then that buying hard copies would hardly be an issue fo the games you still want... and the cloud saving should transfer over no worries...

Amazing value.

I would much rather have a Vita than a Wii U. Talking to you, Santa.

It will get better with time, too.

The problem now is if they rotate in the good Vita games for Plus, I'll have zero incentive to go buy games for it. Except maybe Virtue's Last Reward. At least that would allow me to say "Yep, I've played all the Vita games I have for now".

Been thinking about grabbing Gravity Rush and was curious to play Golden Abyss. I was wondering if/when they were going to add the Vita to Plus The stock just rose for me with this news. Feeling better about having jumped into Plus a while back.

Yeah, guys. This is totally THE reason to buy a Vita. Yup.

Just wait till Christmas.

Just wait till E3.

Just wait till TGS.

BUT I LOVE MY VITA!

I love the last one because people are finally admitting the Vita has bombed hard and can't spin it to make the Vita look good.

Anything else I miss? People were claiming that games like Madden, AC, and CoD would save the system but we all know that's not true.

If you love your Vita good for you and I'm glad you enjoy it just admit Sony dropped the ball and sales are in the gutter. I'm tired of people trying to spin Vita sales because it comes off so ridiculous it reads like a press release.

Hell, read some of the post in this thread. They come off fake like some PS person wrote them up. Even some of the ones where people say they going to buy a Vita now because of this.

@algertman It's $136 of free games for the price of a $50 annual subscription. With more free games to come can that year. For both the Vita and PS3. And loads of PS3 owners already subscribe to Plus. If I didn't already have a Vita, then right now yes I would be buying one. It's such a good deal that the free games basically make up for the cost of buying into the hardware.

@algertman Yes, but I was responding to your surprise that people would be claiming they will buy a Vita because of this. If you know what a good deal PS+ is, then why do you find it hard to believe this would happen?

Also for those who want to know. This week in japan 3DS sold around 47x more hardware units than Vita. Vita barely cracked 4k while 3ds busted 187k.

I would've bought Plus for this, but I already have Gravity Rush and Wipeout 2048.

Also, lol, War of the Lions? That's a pretty random choice. And it's hilarious how the regular FFTactics on PSone Classics runs better than this PSP remake.

@zaldar: Most digital PSP games will work just fine on the Vita, and any you already own will be available to download free of charge. The games will generally look better on the Vita's screen, and you can map various buttons to the right stick and the touchscreen to make the controls more convenient.

I have the little discs for my psp though so they are not digital. Hmm wish there was a trade in your psp and we will upgrade you to a vita for less promotion or something...as they came out with the vita really close (for me) to the psp...

I'm afraid not. They did have such a program in Japan where you could insert the disc in a PSP and pay a fee for a digital copy, but it had poor support from publishers who would rather you buy the game again and wasn't particularly popular. They do have PSP sales on PSN every now and then though, and it sounds like PS Plus will include the occasional PSP title.

Maybe Sony is trying to boost hardware sales by offering PS+ for Vita? Making it a better value proposition, thereby increasing the install base, thereby incentivizing publishers to actually release some games for the Vita? Also, the 3DS is mostly riding on the infamous one-two punch of both Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter, which are insanely popular over there. The longevity of the PSP in Japan is largely due to MH. Also, comparing Japan, where handhelds are still in large demand and smartphones haven't really taken hold, and the West, where the opposite is true, is like comparing apples and oranges.

@Curufinwe And WotL has a much better localisation. Whatwere the Hokuten / Nanten doing in a fantasy setting based on Medieval Europe, anyway?!

You can get at LEAST two of those games, or one of them and a $50 gift card, with the purchase of a Vita every other week from different retailers,, so it's not some kind of mind blowing deal and if you're not already a PS+ member it's even less of an incentive. This is great for people who already own a Vita, or a Vita and PS+ and somehow haven't played a handful of the only decent games on the system. Anyone trying to claim this is going to get people on board with the Vita are fucking delusional.

@msavo: Because if the sales figures for the system are that piss poor they need to get people to buy their 250-300 dollar handheld system and this is a way to incentivize people to do that?

On that most likely assumption, I picked a damn good time to decide to get a vita!

I really only hope that when existing PS3 subscribers see they have essentially free games sitting there that they can't play, it will be enough for some to buy a Vita. It's such a great bit of hardware with some really good, quirky titles. It's just a shame that it needs bland crap like Call of Duty to sell well for it to succeed.

Anything that can get some more hardware units sold gets my vote, if only for my own selfish reasons.
