PSP Go Confirmed Via Qore Leak

A leaked episode of Qore confirms rumors of a redesigned PSP, along with new Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, and Metal Gear Solid games.

A blurry shot of the new PSP hardware.
A blurry shot of the new PSP hardware.
The rumors surrounding a significantly redesigned PSP--one that would forgo a UMD drive in favor of internal flash storage--have been coming so hot and heavy in the lead up to E3, we were pretty sure that we'd learn all about it at Sony's press conference next week. Unfortunately for Sony's best-laid plans, a shaky-cam version of what appears to be an upcoming episode of Qore, Sony's own PSN-based promotional "video magazine," has hit YouTube, confirming the existence of the PSP Go and providing a slew of details.

In the video, Qore host Veronica Belmont speaks with what appears to be Sony marketing chief John Koller, who starts off talking about some of the games that will be available for the new PSP Go download service, name-checking franchises like Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, and Metal Gear Solid, as well as the already-announced LittleBigPlanet PSP game. He goes on to briefly talk about plans to roll out movie rental and purchase and TV show purchasing on the PSP Go, and it kind of sounds like there might be some portability between video purchases made on the PS3 and the PSP.

The hardware is shown briefly, and while it appears to retain the same number of buttons as its predecessor, it also looks to feature a screen that will slide down over the controls, something that was key to all the PSP Go rumors up to now, and will apparently make the PSP Go smaller than the current PSP 3000 hardware. Surprisingly, Koller says that the PSP Go will not be a replacement for the PSP 3000, which Sony will continue to sell.

Aside from the sliding screen and the smaller form-factor, the PSP Go will also feature 16GB of internal flash memory to support the whole download-only format, as well as Bluetooth for tethering to the PS3 as well as cell phones, though no specifics are given as to what kind of functionality this will provide.

Sony has still given no official confirmation about this, and I suspect we still won't hear a peep from them, despite how convincing this evidence is. Here's the YouTube video that started all this fun, though I suspect it won't take long for Sony to have this pulled.

UPDATE: Eurogamer has also unearthed a gallery of clean, high-res images of the hardware. As they say, "Somebody's PSP Go-ing to get fired."

@bartholomew999:

Why would you get a DSi?

The huge double standard between the PSP and DS is ridiculous. People citing having to carry around UMD's as a reason to hate on the PSP. Don't you also have to carry around DS cards?

At first glance it is actually pretty ugly looking, but a lot of the high-res and clearer shots that have since surfaced (specifically, that Eurogamer gallery) actually make it look very nice. I'm not nearly as repulsed now.

Putting a second analog stick on the PSP would just open the floodgates of PS2 port shovelware, and extremely mediocre, low budget 3D action/platform games. Who honestly want's to play the next big, huge Metal Gear Solid or Devil May Cry game on a handheld? Dual stick controls are best suited for console games, developers who know what they are doing (Sony Bend, Ready at Dawn) seem to make plenty of great PSP games without the use of a second analog stick. Can you imagine the dexterity it would take to be able to use 2 sticks AND face buttons AND shoulder buttons on a handheld, with it's smaller design face? Unless you want a handheld that's about 10 inches wide, it's not going to work.

I really don't mean to argue this even further, but I disagree, and hell, I just like to argue in general.  The PSN for both the PSP and PS3 are still costing Sony bandwidth, and with the Go launching supposedly as a 100% download exclusive platform, there's going to be a ton of cost to Sony that they're going to want to divide and pass off to others. The old PSP network barely had anything, so it's understandable at that point there isn't going to be any taxing on the old store. And there isn't any need to make the second analog do anything in current PSP titles, especially since no one will be able to play those games in the first place without a UMD drive. But there's no reason for a second analog stick not to be included as an optional control method in upcoming titles and for use in the XMB menus and store for easier movement, and turned off for original PSP software. And when the Go is going to be taking out a UMD drive and throwing in cheap flash memory, the cost isn't going to be major at all.

It looks like a solid revamp.Anybody who's complaining about the lack of a second analog stick doesn't understand the logistics of it and the true results a second analog stick would bring.

This will bring more developers back to the PSP now that the piracy fears have been eased.

Those idiots should have put a secend analog stick where the start/select buttons are now, and placed those in the empty space above.

Bad move; that's what everyones' been calling for.

Bandwidth is super cheap, and I'm betting that Sony would still find it advantageous to encourage much more content on the PSN rather than less, which would require them *not* to put a 16-cent-on-the-dollar tax on every gigabyte downloaded. Especially since most PSP games are much smaller in nature (between 300 and 800 megabytes), so traffic would probably be lower overall anyway. Paying to maintain all of the open channels for PSP content that weren't being used is probably more of a strain than paying for all of the used bandwidth for a popular service that brings in loads more profits in smaller bites.

The second analogue stick would put a huge added cost in materials and in time for Sony. Dev-kits still use the PSP-1000 chassis last time I saw them, so they would either need to retrofit every single one or buy them all back and sell new ones to everyone interested in making new PSP games. Developers would also need to make a choice: leave the old gamers behind with uncontrollable fixed-behind-character cameras and develop for camera controls, ignore camera controls and create good fixed camera angles, or do both. None of those would be a good situation for anybody to be in. Overall, it's just easier to wait and shove it in a PSP2 SKU. The PSP Go! might seem like a more drastic change, but realistically nothing internal was modified enough to warrant it being called a sequel. It's still just a PSP.

Edit: I also love to argue >.>

Not to derail the arguments between people who can't agree if this needs a 2nd analog stick or not, but one of the thigns I noticed after looking at the photos is that I didn't see a volume control in the pictures. Makes me wonder if they are moving the volume entirely to an in-cord remote the way Apple did with the new shuffle they just put out.

As everyone else says. COME ON! no duel stick. I myself bought a psp, and while I don't  think it sucks, it could of been better.

Any company that could make a duel stick portable would own the market. I hate the DS and the PSP is getting old too.  I say Microsoft step up and get your share of a market that is all but gone stale!    You know you have been thinking about it!  Now is your chance.

I can just  see what the unavailing would look like.  - Room goes dark. On giant screens we see kids playing , some with there Sony/Nintendo portable products others, basketball. And there is just one kid, sitting on a bench possibly. We can see him from behind unknown what device he has in his hand.  We hear gunfire and music louder then all the other kids. One kid look up from his game realizes that the kid on the bench has something different something,  better.  The kid drops his hand held, walks to the boy and watches him play his game.  (The camera slowly starts to zoom into where the boy is sitting) We hear chaotic sounds of a battlefield and all other kids turn to see whats going on drop what they are doing and run over the the boy on the bench. (The camera is now panning  past the kids standing behind the guy on the bench and looks down to see what the boy has. After a few seconds it zooms into the game he is playing) Obviously it would have to be some FPS.  We see a few minutes of game play and then the player dies.  The kid then tuns off his system gets off the bench and walks away. Leaving all the other kids in awe. Someone from Microsoft then walks on stage holding the devise in his hand. (with that strange smile all executives to walk onstage have) We see on the giant screens the hand held and price $220 or something.  Its corny, but it would be kind of cool. I think.

Oh yeah, while the Microsoft exec is talking his mic gets cut off,the screens go black. The whole room goes dark. slight echos of thumping/bashing around fill the room. Then all of a sudden the screens light up with a chart that shows why Sony's PSP is better  then its competitors.

No thanks, sirs. While I admit I've been wanting to update my PSP for a little while now, this isn't what I want. I admit I'm a huge fan of the digital distribution only method. I've been wanting that out of a handheld for a while now, and I figured Sony would do it first. My main issue comes from the fact that the Go! looks like a highly breakable piece of junk. I don't do those phones with the sliding screens that reveal hidden buttons and textpads, and I certainly don't plan on playing a handheld that has one. Just one more thing that can get broken. And why is it that the screen is still horribly exposed, just asking to be gouged the one time I accidently toss my keys and it in the same pocket? Just poor design all the way.

Swing and a miss.

The only thing I need to be totally sold (besides an upgrade to a new wireless standard, an OLED, a glass screen and 8+ hours of battery life) would be a kiosk system that allows you to go to stores (any store, BB, GS, Wal-Mart, Target) and scan a bar-code into a kiosk that then allows you to download a digital version of the game. It could be exploited to give a person a free copy of an already purchased game, but economically it would be no different than someone sharing games with someone else (with the advantage of being able to play multiplayer together, maybe) and it would sell a ton more current PSP owners (such as myself). Once used, the barcode could never be used again. Of course, someone could take a game off a shelf and use the barcode and put it back, but that could be dealt with too.

I would go more for a hardware solution. Keep the kiosk(s), but make it work with the umd. For example:
  1. Insert umd, which the machine reads to confirm the game, and that the disc isn't trashed.
  2. Assuming the disc isn't junk, you get a screen confirming the game, and asking if you would like to get a code for a digital copy of the game.
  3. You skip through a page of legal mumbo-jumbo, and click OK or YES.
  4. Enter your PSN ID. It will be waiting there the next time you log in.
  5. Machine runs your umd through a shredder of some sort, and once every so often the person working electronics dumps out the waste basket of shredded metal and plastic.

Oh man, if I can use the media manager or something to transfer all my UMD games from my old PSP to this one, it's a day one purchase.  If not, I'll wait for a price drop or not at all.  I'm nowhere near the point where I'm willing to leave my PSP collection behind.  Cripes, I haven't even gotten a DSi because I'm not ready to leave the GBA games behind.

The controls look aweful... again. They should switch the d-pad and the stick. I never could play longer than two hours max on my regular psp. Was nice for movies though. But I mean by now Sony should have realized that their controller design is very outdated, both on ps3 and psp. I am no Sony hater, got ps1, ps2, ps3 & psp at home but seriously, Sony controllers are garbage compared to those of the 360 or the old Xbox controller S, or GameCube controllers, or Dreamcast controllers, or Saturn 3D controllers... Everyone I know (who owns a Sony controller and one of those other systems) agrees with me and I guess Sony even knows that... they are just so damn stubborn - Japanese honor whatever-ness

Not interested in JUST downloading games; should come with a UMD slot.
Make it touch screen as well as sliding for controls but with a phone built in and I may be interested in it.

Yeah i agee the one thing people wanted from a new PSP more than anything was a secend anlogue and they just ignored that. Kind of dumb but I guess that falls in line with most of the moves Sony has made in this generation so far anyways. If they can say and do things wrong they will.

I am wondering how many people who have complained about no 2nd stick have even played PSP games like God of War or the Sony Bend games like Syphon Filter or Resistance: Retribution. No 2nd stick needed at all. It just seems to me that people want their "next gen" style 360 and PS3 games on a portable, with a 2nd stick. They want an FPS on a handheld. It's not going to happen. That's why it's a handheld. If you want those games, play them on the consoles, where they belong.

And like someone else has stated a while ago, adding a second analog stick wouldn't magically enable dual stick controls on all previous PSP games. Come on people, get smarter. This is PSP's version of the DSi, I really don't get the big uproar. Don't like the 1 stick? Wait until the next generation of the PSP. The PSP Go! is not that.

This is what happens when Sony can't admit the PSP is going down, and UMD is a failure.  They are trying to bring life to the PSP so they can claim 10 year life cycle.  They need to just suck it up and make a true PSP-2.  Touchscreens are taking over the moblie market.  How can this NOT have a touchscreen? Screw the 2nd analog, I would be at least a little interested if it had a touchscreen and was branded as a new machine. boo.

Looks pretty cool, I still don't totally love the idea of getting rid of the UMD drive but I like the 16gb's of memory.  I don't really understand why this wouldn't replace the 3000, sure its nice to still have the chance to get a UMD drived PSP but at the same time it takes away some of the impact of the redesign.  Its a bit controversial in my mind with out the UMD, I'm hoping there planning on giving a cheaper price tag to this because of the loss of the UMD....  Would be nice to hack this lol.

@VilhelmNielsen:  Yeah, people say that and I still say that makes no sense.  If they added a second analog stick, it doesn't mean the titles that have already been released wouldn't work with it.  They should do it at this time because it's the first thing everybody notices with any of their hardware refresh.

If this iteration significantly improves load times, I'll be seriously tempted to get one.  I have never seen a PSP game demo in store that had load times I would be willing to put up with in a handheld system.  But lots of games I'd love to try.

Honestly, does Sony not care about customer feedback at all? Adding a second analog "nub" was the only major problem with the PSP, and it seems like they're just plain refusing to put one on.

I got out of the PSP a long time ago, but this might be reason to come back IF a few things occur.

1.  It's not priced too bad.  Maybe in the $100-150 range.  (16GB only?  Please.)
2.  The download service allows you to redownload your products anytime.  Otherwise what's the point of downloading new games, I'd lose my old ones!
3.  It fits my hands. (Doubtful since ever since the first Gameboy I've had to get the add-ons to make portables bigger to fit my hands better. :p )
4.  Game selection.  I don't need an MP3 Player or movie player, it's got to be the games!
5.  RTF viewer.  If I can read my ebooks on it, then it'd be something to replace my Nokia N800.

With its slide-click design, it must be a nightmare for third-party accessories-designers to make a Hello Kitty case for it.
