PSP Go Confirmed Via Qore Leak

A leaked episode of Qore confirms rumors of a redesigned PSP, along with new Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, and Metal Gear Solid games.

A blurry shot of the new PSP hardware.
A blurry shot of the new PSP hardware.
The rumors surrounding a significantly redesigned PSP--one that would forgo a UMD drive in favor of internal flash storage--have been coming so hot and heavy in the lead up to E3, we were pretty sure that we'd learn all about it at Sony's press conference next week. Unfortunately for Sony's best-laid plans, a shaky-cam version of what appears to be an upcoming episode of Qore, Sony's own PSN-based promotional "video magazine," has hit YouTube, confirming the existence of the PSP Go and providing a slew of details.

In the video, Qore host Veronica Belmont speaks with what appears to be Sony marketing chief John Koller, who starts off talking about some of the games that will be available for the new PSP Go download service, name-checking franchises like Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, and Metal Gear Solid, as well as the already-announced LittleBigPlanet PSP game. He goes on to briefly talk about plans to roll out movie rental and purchase and TV show purchasing on the PSP Go, and it kind of sounds like there might be some portability between video purchases made on the PS3 and the PSP.

The hardware is shown briefly, and while it appears to retain the same number of buttons as its predecessor, it also looks to feature a screen that will slide down over the controls, something that was key to all the PSP Go rumors up to now, and will apparently make the PSP Go smaller than the current PSP 3000 hardware. Surprisingly, Koller says that the PSP Go will not be a replacement for the PSP 3000, which Sony will continue to sell.

Aside from the sliding screen and the smaller form-factor, the PSP Go will also feature 16GB of internal flash memory to support the whole download-only format, as well as Bluetooth for tethering to the PS3 as well as cell phones, though no specifics are given as to what kind of functionality this will provide.

Sony has still given no official confirmation about this, and I suspect we still won't hear a peep from them, despite how convincing this evidence is. Here's the YouTube video that started all this fun, though I suspect it won't take long for Sony to have this pulled.

UPDATE: Eurogamer has also unearthed a gallery of clean, high-res images of the hardware. As they say, "Somebody's PSP Go-ing to get fired."

Don't ugh him just because he wants a second joystick... I want one too.

I think its ugly when it slides out, it looks great when its not slided out, nice and small.  Too expensive.  The only way I'll consider this is if there's homebrew on it, and if I can get all my UMD games onto it.

Ugh. How many times does this need to be said? There is no 2nd stick because this is not a successor to the PSP.

And the $250 price will absolutely kill this thing. There is no reason whatsoever for this thing to be more expensive than the PSP-3000. It has a smaller screen, and no UMD drive. Are the slide out controls REALLY that expensive to produce, or is Sony just complete batshit clueless as to how to sell a piece of electronic hardware these days?

I've never liked the current PSP, and whenever it comes up, I mention how it would do better without the UMD.  I don't see anything about retention of the Memory Stick slot, nor can I tell from the photos.  I could see if they ditched the MS slot to prevent modding/ piracy, but that would be a deal breaker for me (if I were in the market for another wasted portable system).

A hard 16 GB limit would be horrible for a download-only system.  I would gladly buy games on Memory Stick instead of UMB or download.  Even dedicating a store-bought stick per game would be alright.

As for the joystick, that's a step in the right direction.  Having two might not be practical for this form factor.  The mechanism to have the sticks protract when the device is slid open actually wouldn't be that complicated.  Taller like the Dual Shock might make having two sticks work better.

They need a new hand model. Hands look weird and super huge.
Unless the wholeheartedly accept home brew there is no way I'll get this though.

Idk, I'm going to pass on this and stick with my current PSP. I've never really like sliding designs for electronics, for some reason the gadget always breaks.

Fuck buying this. Portable OPS and Acid were the only reason to even own a PSP, and besides that it's been a paperweight from the day I bought it. And now they are making it even more useless by releasing this? Whatever.

If they find a way to run homebrew on it I'll probably get it. I don't go anywhere without my launch PSP and 8gig card loaded with retro games.

This would be my main music player if I have the money.

Im shocked they there keeping both the PSP - 3000 and Go. They still make too much money on UMD and DD isn't ready (despite all the talk, Music Downloads still make only 33% of the whole Music Market - which is half of the industry now but still way too low and in TOO MANY hands) But maybe there doing something else with this plan I don't know yet.

This type of handheld system is what I have been waiting for. I have pretty much stopped using my PSP because I always had to think about lugging around UMDs. If all this indeed really is true then I'm a happy one for sure.

Not sure where all this love comes from for Downloadable Games...

In an ideal world yes the savings from distribution would be passed onto us the consumers... But this isn't an ideal world and Sony don't give anything away! They are one of the greediest companies out there - if a normal PSP game is £29.99 I think they will charge £27.99 for it on download with of course the option for Micro Transactions! (uurrrgghh...)

Anyone that has ever seen a Sony Press conference its all about the $ - you'll see this year it'll be "PS3 has sold X million, PSP has sold X million and PS2 has sold X million" its what they always lead with.

I like the look of this new Unit.

The question remains - what happens to my old UMD when I upgrade.  I'm seriously considering buying this as my current PSP fell out of its cover while in my bag and got an annoying scar across the screen.

AAAAAAAAAAARGHHH!!!!

Seriously, I've had every psp iteration going (in spite of my better judgement).

I do use my PSP for video a lot. And it would be awesome to be able to play Patapon2 with bluetooth headphones instead of having to deal with the regular semi-garrote-ing I get when my headphone cables tangle in the strap of my man-bag.

There hasn't been a tidy, psp specific bluetooth adaptor available since the psp 1000 series shape.

I know I'd hate myself though. Let's face it, Sony are proper bastards with the pricing on their download services. And even if they tried something fully underhanded to shift units (eg download only availability of LBP, and Gran Turismo Mobile etc.), I'm pretty sure you'd still be able to download that to the memory stick of your existing unit. They've at least not taken the step that Nintendo did by giving the "apple bandwagon, online store iteration" extra crunch that would eventually force people to trade up.

It's time to draw the line on the hardware iterations people.

AAAAAAAAAAARGHHH!!!!

But with the price of the PSP compared to the PS3, there will be a lot more PSP's circulating than PS3's (or at least Sony hopes so), so the amount of downloads will be (most likely) much more than that of the PS3. And with the drop of the UMD drive, there's not much holding them back costwise from adding that stick. Not to mention the fact that without the UMD drive, all games will be going from the PSP Go's menu, so if they're putting in so much work for a new system, a control system for games downloaded for the PSP Go apart from their UMD counterparts isn't really so far-fetched. With all that aside, it's pretty obvious, that the only reason the PSP has made such an extreme upgrade and is still calling it a PSP is that it doesn't want to admit failure, which is just sad. I don't think the original PSP failed really at all, it was obviously lacking, but they had some really good games buried under all the hate. If this system had the second stick and looked sexier and more comfortable, they could totally throw a 2 on the end of that and I would buy it (But it wouldn't hurt if that screen was touch, had rumble and motion control, I really wouldn't even care if it's more powerful lol)

So it kinda looks like both this and the redesigned slim PS3 are both coming true. I think the major make-or-break deal with both these systems will be price. If the PSP Go can be priced less than the current PSP (HA, right...) then I'd be all for it. I might possibly settle for a price drop on the current models, putting the new one where those are now in price, but because I have a PSP and am happy with it in its own dust-covered, long forgotten way, I'm sure as hell not going to buy a new PSP unless I can find a damn good reason to. That'll be up to the games.

Sorry dude I don't think I mentioned the DSi, which I'm not impressed with either.  If the PSP-Go is a discounted item then it maybe becomes an option but I stand by what I said, in terms of specs and features, other than the flash memory this is a retool, only, and not worth an upgrade imo.  Here's my post below from page 5.

Maybe some people prefer their shooters and third person action games. I dont see where you get the idea about me calling the majority of people stupid. Handheld wasn't designed for one genre alone either, it was designed so that gamers can play games whenever they want, where they want. People dreamed of playing their favourite FPS or any other game from a different genre on a console they can take anywhere.. And you shouldnt compare home console games to handheld console games as they are both completely different hardware-wise and some games are better on some consoles than others. I dont think Sony should make lazy ps2 ports either because they will simply turn out crap. Its hard to get a good port between consoles these days as it means the developer will have to make the graphics or physics etc less detailed making the gameplay a drag if the graphics were the only good thing going for the game itself. Also, even if they included another thumb stick, it can help many games gameplay-wise and im talking about every genre in general wheras you were talking about one particular genre which the second thumb stick would be no use for. Put it this way, Sony wouldnt be making a mistake putting another thumbstick in there. they would be doing the console and its fans a favour.

I dont think a 2nd analog alienates  current PSP owners. Gamers with one analog old PSPs could control the camera of 3d games by using the DPAD. Game developers could program this control sceme as well as a traditional two-stick control scheme for those with the new 2-stick model PSP. They did the same thing for owners of the original PS pad after the Dualshock was released, and that worked fine.

IMO the real reason for not having dualsticks on the GO is that there simply isnt any room for it., at least not with the "cram all imputs underneath the face" configuration Sony decided on.

I don't think you can say that they wanted to maintain playability across platforms because this one DOESN"T have a UMD drive, which is a fairly significant difference, as you mentioned. So why not just go whole hog and add that second analog stick? They've already divide the market between those who have old psp and this new one, there's no benefit to not adding it, as all Old psp games will still be able to function on the new psp.
