Psychonauts to Mac, Steam Version Gets Updated, iOS Stuff

If you've been looking for a reason to go back to Psychonauts, now's a good time.

The love for Double Fine's Psychonauts remains strong, even after all these years.
The love for Double Fine's Psychonauts remains strong, even after all these years.

Hey, remember Psychonauts? Double Fine does, as the company announced a slew of Psychonauts-related news today. Don't get too excited, though, as none of them involve a sequel or an HD update.

Instead, since getting its hands on the entirety of the Psychonauts IP, Double Fine has partnered with another studio to produce a Mac version of its quirky action platformer. The existing Steam version has also been tweaked to include cloud saves and Steam achievements.

The studio also claims to have crafted a "slightly modified" version of the not-so-beloved Meat Circus stage that closes out the game.

“We are really excited,” said the elusive double agent known as Tim Schafer in the press release, “to finally be answering fans’ requests for a more difficult Meat Circus.”

Lovely.

There's also a way to bring your love of Psychonauts on-the-go with the Psychonauts Vault Viewer, an iOS app featuring all of the game's Memory Vaults with some brand-new audio commentary.

Does anyone know if these PC versions include support for gamepads? Some native support for the Xbox 360 gamepad would be pretty cool.

Last I checked, it doesn't unfortunately.

I started playing this a few months ago, and while I loved it at first, I really have no desire to finish it. The style just wore on me after a while. There are some awesome bits in it though.

However, all this updating is fantastic news. Time to go through Psychonauts an eighth time.

The only part of the meat circus that I remember is a part where you're climbing on some sort of fence while being chased by the water and I could never figure out how you were supposed to get through it without getting hurt.

Actually I found a video on youtube that showed that part, it's the part where he keeps dying cause the fire wont let him get high enough to make a weird jump around the outside and grab the other fence. You can make it without, as I did, taking damage from the fire so you can use your invinsibility time to get higher up when you jump, but it's damn near impossible.

For anyone who hasn't played the game SPOILERS obviously.

I wonder..I already have the PC version of Psychonauts for Steam, it would be nice if that just became Mac compatible as I only use Macs now.

Also great news on them getting the IP back! Sequals and HD remakes ahoy!

Psychonauts now supports SteamPlay, so once the Mac version is added to Steam, you'll have access to it.

Ya I own this on PC and XBox. Such a good game.

Wish they would get to that sequel already, it had a good cliff hanger. Its also a fun game, for what that's worth.

@Shaka999: Yes, its worth it if you like platformers.

In an absolute sense, compared to other games, no, the Meat Circus is probably not that hard. But relative to the rest of Psychonauts, it comes out of nowhere. You've got a fun, lighthearted game with a lazy difficulty curve and all sorts of fascinating art direction, collectibles, and hilarious tidbits to distract your focus from the very forgiving platforming. Then, you get to the Meat Circus and now you've got to pay attention to those jumps. People complain about the Meat Circus because it's just not the game they've been playing for the previous eight hours. I'm with you in that I didn't find it hard, but I can certainly see where the complaints come from.

@Alraiis: I contend that the level with Napoleon Bonaparte was pretty tough; you had cannons firing at you while you were platforming.

I don't know what the Meat Circus is, but the suburb level in that picture is the one I couldn't get past. I got stuck trying to find something and after several hours of wandering around, just decided it wasn't worth it.

The 360 controller worked, technically, but you couldn't map anything to the triggers because it didn't recognize them as inputs. It made mapping the controls a little awkward unless you used Xpadder or whatever.

As of this update, the game is able to fully recognize the 360 controller, and presumably other newer gamepad standards as well.

Technically the game is in HD already, at least if you have the PC version. Just crank the resolution up. It's not complicated:)

I got this on GOG some time ago - my laptop's a couple years old, so I stick mostly to PS2-era gaming (or equivalent) when it comes to PS2. And Psychonauts is one of my favorites. If Double Fine got the IP back from Majesco, I'm sure we'll see more of this in the future. Maybe an episodic sequel on DLG channels? Like Sam & Max....but with a platformer? That seems doable.

This. I thought it wasn't great when I original played it, then I found a boxed copy of the game on PC in some weird store for $2 last year and tried it again. Still not good.

I still haven't finished playing Psychonauts. The last time I played on the PC, the game gave me a big headache due to motion sickness. The camera and characters moved too fast- made my eyeballs spin, and it made me sick. Am I the only one who had this problem? :P

I hope this time I get to finish Psychonauts on the Mac.

The game has good writing and great characters, but I found it PAINFULLY unfunny. The level design is imaginative, but it's a bit frustrating. Overall, pretty good, but nah, I ain't gonna fall for all that hype again.
