Ratchet & Clank and Heavenly Sword Will Become Animated Films

One's headed to theaters in 2015, while the other is going direct-to-video. Try and guess which is which!

I felt kinda bad about Heavenly Sword getting barely mentioned in these announcements, so I thought I'd be nice and give that game a story screenshot. It was a good game!
I felt kinda bad about Heavenly Sword getting barely mentioned in these announcements, so I thought I'd be nice and give that game a story screenshot. It was a good game!

This morning revealed that Sony has a couple of film projects in the works, each based on one of the company's PlayStation brands. One of those films, and the one taking the lion's share of the attention this morning, is the newly announced Ratchet & Clank film. The one that barely got mentioned outside of a quick note in a Variety article talking about the Ratchet & Clank film is Heavenly Sword, the PlayStation 3 exclusive action game from Ninja Theory.

Both will be computer animated films, produced by Blockade Entertainment, the studio behind the recent animated adventure Escape from Planet Earth. While it's not clear from the story who will be animating the Heavenly Sword movie, the Ratchet & Clank film is currently in animation production at Rainmaker Entertainment.

According to the Variety article, the R&C movie is intended to be an origin story of sorts, aimed at appealing to a mass audience who might not be intimately familiar with Insomniac's game series. However, the film will retain the primary voice talent from the games, including James A. Taylor, David Kaye and Jim Ward.

The Ratchet & Clank film is currently scheduled to hit theaters in 2015. Heavenly Sword doesn't appear to have a targeted release date, but is planned for a direct-to-video release. I've embedded the first teaser trailer for Ratchet & Clank below, if you want to see some "Duck Amuck" style goofiness featuring Ratchet, Clank, and Qwark.

I'm okay with this as long as it's done as good, if not better, than the CG cutscenes in A Crack in Time. I remember being highly impressed with them.

The animation in that video looks good...except for the lip synching. That seems way off. Weird.

@wolfmanjenkins: Kids dude. Kids are excited about the idea.

No offence to R&C, obviously a sweet franchise, but it's easy to tell who the movie's aimed at.

I dunno if we need more Ratchet and Clank. I really don't.

I do. Or at least I need games LIKE R&C that make me laugh, go to colorful new worlds, mix in platforming and aren't just miserable murder-soaked runs down bland corridors toward cutscene after cutscene. I need these games more than ever right now.

I'm all for more games like R&C. Funny, bright, colourful, just an all-out game and proud of it. And I've enjoyed every single one of their releases mechanically, I love the way they play.

I'm actually more excited for the Heavenly Sword movie. I'd love it if they used the same art style of the five shorts that were made for the game.

If it ever comes out I hope it's well promoted so that, when it does ok, that there is a possibility of a game sequel.

Wow about time Sony finally does something else with Heavenly Sword. No one can blame that game for not being able to sell a $600 console that wasn't able to do anything more then $400 competitor was doing! (lets forget blu-ray exist, because it didn't really matter for games in the end) I have played Heavenly Sword from beginning to end and really did enjoy it and would be more interested in a sequel.

Ratchet and Clank 3D's models look better than ever. This is some A+ grade CGI. You can actually see the detail in Ratchet's fur. Impressive, after watching that teaser I'm sold. 2015 come quicker!

I don't know how I didn't notice it before, but Ratchet & Clank is one of the most immediately film-make-able games ever made.

More interested in Heavenly Sword. The story for HS would actually make a great action blockbuster.

Now, the combat and gameplay needed a lot of work.

Here's to hoping they can get the wonderful acting of Andey Serkis back for the project.

I predict that Heavenly Sword will go straight to digital/disk & have a game launch on Vita along side it.

I also predict that R&C will never release. Large studios can't seem to figure out how to produce video game movies without a sexed up lead character.

Ratchet and Clank could be cool but I have the feeling they'll kiddie it up too much and it will turn out like Planet 52, Fly Me to the Moon or Space Chimps. I assume this will be done by Sony Pictures Animation. They've been hit or miss over recent years. Pirates Band of Misfits and Arthur Christmas were good but I didn't think much of Hotel Transylvania, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Open Season. Surf's Up was an okay-if-on-cable movie, too.

Ratchet and Clank (like Oddworld) seem tailor-made for the feature animation treatment, but looking at most of the mediocrity that passes for animated entertainment from Hollywood (no more Ice Age, please!), I don't have high hopes.

I would have preferred if Heavenly Sword was a live-action B-movie like Red Sonja or Barbarian Queen.

Awesome! If this does well which I think to kid audiences and fans of the series (me) it may help with giving hope for videogame movies. If its done by the developer or someone who gives a shit about the series and not some Hollywood jack off videogame movies could be done well I think

The non-interactive parts of Heavenly Sword were the best parts. This sounds like a solid plan for a quality experience, but I just don't know how it could be financially viable (since, you know... who the fuck cares for the Heavenly Sword IP at this point?).

The R&C movie looks like it perfectly captures the spirit of the games. I am especially pleased that they are using the voice cast from the games. This seems like it has been the endgame for that series since it first started. I am kinda excited to see it. Heavenly Sword could be cool too I guess. I haven't thought about that game since I first beat it about 5 years ago, and since I doubt too many people played it, I wonder what the thinking was for picking up this IP. I will probably check it out when it shows up inevitably on Netflix instant.

Interesting though I'd rather have a live action Alan Wake movie (based on the game + DLC + maybe American Nightmare).

Oh, sweet Jesus, please get as much of the VO talent from the games as possible. Otherwise, it's a shame that the Heavenly Sword movie doesn't appear to be getting much effort put into it, but I feel like Ratchet and Clank is one of the first times I've looked at the potential of a video game franchise to be translated to film and gone "yeah, that actually seems really smart."

Insomniac has done some of the best humor and even straight emotion in the business when they're at the top of their game. Here's hoping that can make the transition intact and we can have a successful thing with this.

That R&C trailer was great. It's amazing to see how far the animation quality has come since the first game.

Funny how we know more about the R&C movie than the Warcraft movie.

The humor in that Ratchet and Clank trailer isn't really clicking with me, but it's still one of the few game series that make sense as a animated film.

Unless you are Studio Ghibli, doing "mundane" or something approximating the real world for an animated movie never works.

In that respect the idea of doing a Heavenly Sword movie makes a lot of sense. It is a series that they can try this plan out on without risking their precious big value Uncharted. If the Heavenly Sword movie tanks, then no one will care. If an Uncharted movie is tried and tanks there is a bit more teeth gnashing and wailing.

What's up with all the Heavenly Sword hate... or disinterest as it were? It was a great game, with an awesome story. The animated series released in parts before the game was fantastic:

I just realized that I knew James A Taylor when I was growing up. I remember when he was trying to get the loony tunes voice roles, he had a reel where he did a Shakespeare sketch (I don't remember now which one) with all them. He also helped my family do a radio show we did (just for fun, we did it for the family during christmas) in his studio. He also went to the same church as me and my family at the time. That was a long time ago.

I know this is not really what this article was about, but my mind is literally blown right now is all. He's done voices in several things in video games since then and I never knew.

So weird.

I like how they are keeping the voice actors from the R&C games in this movie rather than finding celebrity voices for the characters.

Man, celebrity stunt casting in animation sucks.

I sort of feel like a Ratchet and Clank movie would've been more appropriate during the height of the series' popularity. That said, I think R&C is far better suited for film than most game franchises and with good writers this good be fucking rad.
