Relic Turning Retribution's Last Stand Mode Into A Standalone Game [Updated]

The name? The Last Standalone. Not kidding, man.

UPDATE:  The Last Standalone and Retribution will receive the same updates simultaneously, DOW publisher THQ informed us this morning.

If I were the God Emperor, I’d be smiling at Relic. The (mostly) real-time-strategy development studio announced plans yesterday to release a cheaper, standalone experience based on Dawn Of War II - Retribution's “Horde” mode, The Last Stand. It's called The Last Standalone, and it's now available on Steam for  $9.99.

The Last Standalone is ripped straight from Retribution, so if you already have the game, this is safe to skip over. However, if you don't have Retribution and want to buy The Last Standalone, you’ll be able to “upgrade” the game to Retribution at a “reduced price.”

No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==The goal of The Last Standalone is to introduce new players to the core game, Retribution, via this cheaper, tighter and less complex experience.

“We saw this as a unique opportunity to introduce new players to the Dawn of War franchise as well as expanding the player base for the already popular Last Stand mode,” producer Jeff Lydell said in the announcement press release.

The one question I have is if Retribution or the Last Standalone will receive updates that the other won't. I have a feeling that Relic won't be boning owners of either game, but I fired off an e-mail to THQ to check, just in case.

I almost kind of wish they had maybe something similar for XBLA or PSN or whatever, although I have no idea how that would control.

That's great. I'll get this when I don't have MK to play through.

Yo, there was a version of The Last Stand on the original game, non-expansioned game, Dawn of War II. Have they changed it at all in this newer, Retribution version? Mainly: are all the unlocks the same? And did they add, say, more than one map?

lol, how clever of them. This is pretty cool, and anyone not willing to drop the money on the DoW II games should pick this up, it's very fun.

Hahaha, I lol'd, even knowing fully that ALL UNITS would still control just one unit. Whether your sarcasm on that front was intended or not, I still salute you.

The guy responsible for that title needs to become responsible for titling the next Fast and Furious movie. With the series in the borderline-ludicrous state it is after the fifth movie (not necessarily a negative review, there), I'm kind of hoping for 6 Fast 6 Furious.

Smart idea.  Last Stand is the only thing I do in DOW2, the RTS multi-player isn't that good compared to SC2 and I always felt like I was only buying DOW2 for story loot and Last Stand.

Chaos Rising added Chaos and Tyranid heroes. Retribution adds an Imperial Guard hero and a new map. New unlocks for all existing heroes, as well.

Last Stand could totally work on XBLA/PSN.  Keep in mind, in this mode you only have control over a single hero, it's more Diablo-esque than an RTS, really, there are no units.  It's even more minimalistic than the single player campaign.  Maybe this is them testing the waters to see if a stand-alone Last Stand could work elsewhere.

It's worth it.  30 bucks for the complete game, or 10 bucks for the mode people only played.

pretty good idea.  I get the feeling not a lot of people tried this game, but a $10 short-version could really pull in some cash.

As a hardcore competitive RTS fanatic from the tradition of CoH, CnC Generals, and my current poison, DoW 2, I'd say that Dawn of War is superior in its micro game (as in, the actual fighting part of an RTS). For a newer player, its positioning, cover, and stance mechanics make much more visual sense than in SC2, where things like high-ground advantage are relatively abstracted. And, the different synergies with hero and army builds are enough to create a pretty in-depth meta-game.

I also think CoH and Dawn of War do a much better job of portraying armies in line with how a new player expect an army to function. For instance, an MG-42 or a Shuriken Platform in the Relic games don't just kill things at a slightly faster rate than your basic infantry; with their ability to suppress an entire blob of infantry, forcing them to retreat,  they function as area denial weapon. And you can't just have a bunch of riflemen squads take down a Tiger tank on their own  (unless you got sticky-bombs) like you could a Carrier with massed Marines in SC2, you need a dedicated anti-tank unit like a 57mm field gun, bazookas, or a Wolverine Tank hunter.

Had really hoped they would do this, it always had potential to be a DOTA style game but they kept it stuck to the RTS that isn't attractive to many people. Maybe now I can get my friends to try it.

This, also just pick chaos, they're still a beefy race.
Last Stand is a good alternative to people who rather co-op than bother trying to learn the mutli-player. It's a lot different to SC2 that's for sure but it's a fantastic experience on it's own.

This also brings up a good question.

Does this Standalone come with the Chaos Rings and DOW2 Last Stand stuff too?  If it does, then all the fools need to buy this, Last Stand is worth 20 bucks solid in my opinion.

mmmm 3 of the 6 heroes get a second squad to control and a lot of the abilities of the heroes are targeted ae which I don't see being able to be dropped quickly with a controller  like you need to be able to do

Last Stand is definitely the best part of DoW2 Retribution, the campaign was kinda underwhelming for me after the epic awesomeness that was the last two games so good on Relic for doing this.

Does anyone know if those who play with the Last Standalone are able to play games against those who play the Last Stand with Chaos Rising or Retribution?
