Report Says Mirror's Edge 2 Has Been Canned

But has it really?

EA are big fans of Mirror’s Edge, so it’s always been a question of “when” and not “if” a sequel to the free-running action game would appear. In fact, there’s been what EA VP Patrick Soderlund calls a “small team” working on a demo of the game since, at least, mid-2009. But if a report that hit late last year is true, that team’s demo has been rejected, and thus so has Mirror’s Edge 2.

"EA was shown a prototype, but declined with askance,” says a Press 2 Play TV report, which has been translated by Eurogamer. “The project has been stopped--involved parties at DICE are working on something else now. Patrick himself seems to have Mirror's Edge near his heart, but they are not in the business of charity."

As 1UP notes, that’s a strange reason for a game to get canned at this point. The original Mirror’s Edge flopped back in 2008, which was quite some time ago. Here's how that turned out.

== TEASER ==Note that the report states that the Mirror’s Edge 2 team is now working on something else. If the cancellation of Battlefield 1943 and “Onslaught” PC is an indication of how DICE is pulling talent away from other projects, chances are that this team is now crunching on Battlefield 3.

EA gave comment to 1UP without actually denying it or confirming the accuracy of this rumor, but it did mention, “Mirror’s Edge is an important franchise.” Surely, the sequel to the first game in an ‘important franchise’ won’t be tabled for too long, right?

That suck I really liked the first. It was awesome to go through a level a second time and see so much improvement. It felt awesome trying to link jumps for better times.

Mirror's Edge was certainly not the best game this generation, but for me, was one of the most memorable.  I very rarely play games more than once, but I played the first one several times, especially the time trials.

I loved Mirror's Edge, but a sequel would really have needed to make a lot of improvements to sell well. I still would have bought it though just for more of the crazy action.

Damn it and I in my eternal ennui had actually written a plot synopsis and opening scene for a Mirror's Edge sequel.

Though Mirror's Edge had it problems, and didn't sell well, if there was one franchise I was hoping to have a strong comeback with the sequel, it would have been Mirror's Edge. This is disappointing news indeed. Maybe I'll play it once more, for old time's sake...

I still believe there will eventually be a Mirror's Edge 2, EA just wanted more effort put into Battlefield 3. They're still looking for their big shooter.

@phrosnite: No to you maybe.  There are plenty of people who enjoyed Mirror's Edge's  approach to FPS play.  Not all of us just like to point and shoot mindlessly.

Actually Mirror's sold over 2 mil copies worldwide and even the iPhone version sold 37000 units.  Only Edge gave the game a rather negative review with the game rounding out metacritic at 81%.  The game was a pretty successful title.

I hope it turns out this isn't true. I loved Mirror's Edge, though I do recognize every single one of its problems. It seems to me like it'd be a game that could really benefit from a well done sequel, in which the devs take to heart all the criticism and faults pointed out in the first game. It could be great.

It was flawed (I must admit I have yet to finish it), but it had promise. A sequel that corrected the problems could be great.

As I mentioned on Twitter to a friend earlier, I had loads of problems with the first game. If there was any concept that had a ton of potential, however, it was Mirror's Edge. It didn't do much right but what it did, it did really really well.

Loved the concept of Mirror's Edge, didn't like much how it turned out. I went back to it a while ago but couldn't get back into it.

It'd be great if a really good sequel could come out eventually.

I'll be really sad if we never see a new and improved Mirror's Edge.

Mirror's Edge is still one of my favourite games but I guess Ryan's review explains why a lot of people didn't like it - he didn't like the jumping puzzles and found the combat frustrating.

I sincerely hope that while this Mirror's Edge pitch may have been rejected, we'll some day see a sequel that takes some of the unnecessary frustration out of the game while retaining its core concepts.

The first Mirror's Edge was like the first Assassin's Creed - flawed, but with a lot of potential.  Seeing how the AC series has turned out, I would really, really want a sequel to Mirror's Edge.

Brad Nicholson is a bad writer and hurts the credibility of an otherwise outstanding site.

One of the worst games of this generation?  What?  You're crazy. "
I'm probably crazy too. I couldn't stand playing through Mirror's Edge. It was straight up not fun to play. It has a ton of potential, sure, but it was a huge, huge misfire in my opinion. As you can tell, I never had any interest in a sequel to (what I believed to be) a bad game, but maybe it would've fixed all the issues I had with the first game. Then again, they would have to change EVERYTHING for me to believe that Mirror's Edge 2 would be worth playing.

Mirror's Edge is one of the potentially best new franchises this generation, it's a shame EA is too busy trying to tap into the Call of Duty market to care at this point. I think  it had a ton of potential that a sequel could have built upon. In a lot of ways it was like the first Assassin's Creed game, being a whole new type of game. Also like AC1, it had some things preventing it from being an amazing experiences, things that could have easily been fixed in a sequel.

I guess I'll add yet another reason to the list of why I think Call of Duty's popularity has had a negative impact on the game industry.

I actually just bought and beat the original yesterday. Not really saying anything new here, but the concept is really cool, and when you pull things off right it feels great, but any time you lose momentum, be it from screwing up or not knowing where to go, it quickly gets monotonous and maddening. It's hard to tell whither that's just bad level design or if the core gameplay conceits are inherently flawed. Except when they throw too many guys with guns into a room. That's just bad design. I can understand why EA would be wary of a sequel, as Mirror's Egde has a lot to prove, but at the same time, it has a lot that could be gained from one.

Isn't there a stripped-down version of the game in development (or released) for the iPad?

Maybe they're planning to do a EA2D version for Facebook or somesuch. If they canned a real sequel I don't see much else happening, since the original never really sold as well as it's experimental-property-sibling Dead Space.

Man.  Apparently the first one is a really divisive game, though I guess I would expect as much from the gaming community as of late.

I loved it.  It was such a breath of fresh air, a first person game where movement is the focus instead of a simple means to an end.  A game that was as much about the journey as it was the destination.  I've always been a fan of environmental puzzle games like Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider.  You know, games where you saw a room, and your only goal was to find someway to the other side without getting mauled or falling down pits.

Mirror's Edge was so immersive, it was so unique, it was so vibrant.  There's nothing else quite like it, and that alone makes it deserving of a sequel, in my mind, but it seems like many people here are content to pigeonhole DICE into being a developer who only makes Battlefield games and CoD clones.

Every day it seems like I read something that dampens my hope for the future of the gaming industry.  Yesterday it was reading about Mirror's Edge 2 being canceled, and today it's reading "gamers'" reactions to the news.

Its a strange game to get into, but seriously, once you get the beats down and know what to do, Mirror's Edge becomes a fantastic experience. Its definitely not a game that you play once to enjoy, in fact, if you never return to it I can understand why one wouldn't like it. It might boil down to rote memorization, but its designed for speed runs and getting things right.

Really bummed to hear about a sequel not happening, but to be honest, I never actually knew they were planning one.

I heard about this yesterday.  It is bad news.  I enjoyed the first one.  It is one of the only FPSs in the last few years that truly innovated the gameplay.  On max settings with a large monitor, you could actually give yourself vertigo while doing some of the chases.  Sad to see this one being delayed at best, canned at worst.

Mirror's Edge seems to polarize everyone's opinions. Some people seem to have found it unique and refreshing, other people say it won't be missed. I am one of the former, at least give it a chance, because at times in the first game the interesting concepts were delivered quite well. Interesting concepts is something we've not had much of recently in regards to first-person gameplay anyway.

I've been kind of expecting an announcement like this for a while, because it unfortunately makes sense. However I also don't trust european news outlets, a couple weeks ago a french outlet made up that news about I Am Alive transitioning to an XBLA game.

@Cybexx:  that's a pretty sweeping statement. I think european news outlets do a great job considering all the languages they have to deal with.
That I Am Alive thing was Jade Raymond 'joking' it wasn't made up.

A real shame about Mirrors Edge 2 though. I loved the first one. Got through the majority of that game without firing a shot. When that game got it right it was amazing.

Flawed games have the most to improve from sequels.  Hearing that practically perfect games like Dead Space and Arkham Asylum are getting sequels fills me with ambivalence, but it's games with problems that have everything going for them in a sequel.

Sure another one is probably still coming. But if it does, it will obviously be after BF3 anyway. I was just watching a video showing off the radiosity lighting effects of the Frostbite 2 engine and one of the demos had a real Mirror's Edge vibe (white room with red accents).

I played it on the PC and absolutely loved it. Its visual style alone was enough to put it in my personal hall of fame. How could you not love the moments where you run through an orange room, slam into a red door and find yourself in a
saturated white and blue room. It was just... pure.
