Respawn Entertainment’s First Game Is Titanfall

A leaked magazine cover confirms much of what we already knew, including Xbox exclusivity.

No Caption Provided

We knew Respawn would be revealing its new shooter at E3, but it probably wasn’t supposed to happen like this.

A NeoGAF poster subscribes to Game Informer digitally through Google Play, and the latest issue downloaded to his tablet, complete with details on Titanfall. It’s likely this issue wasn’t supposed to go live until next week, as it reveals some big news, such as the game’s exclusivity to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

A PC version is also coming, and development on the Xbox 360 version is happening externally.

The game’s being built on a heavily modified version of Valve’s Source engine, and has a huge focus on mech combat. In this world, mechs are called titans.

According to the poster, the magazine lists Titanfall’s release date as next spring.

Had a feeling Microsoft (with the success of CoD) would try and get this as an exclusive. I wonder if Sony will try and do anything?

t patrick the image you have up there with the article is kind of misleading without a caption if you're not familiar with cod4. maybe a "modern warfare, from the titanfall developers" caption or something idk

Oh, right. It is an EA Partners game though since Respawn is still an independently owned company but yeah that seems like a conflict of interest too considering that Source is a Valve made engine. I don't think Valve requires the game to be featured on Steam if a developer has licensed their engine, this would probably be up to the publisher in this case. So yeah, it'll very likely be an Origin exclusive.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an EA published game that is on steam. so you never know. i'd bet it shows up on steam.

@formic12: That's not what I see.

They said they needed to focus on fewer hardware. In the future they are open to more. They don't specify if it would be this project or another.

"Not to say we won't [go multiplatform] in the future, but for our first game we wanted to focus on making the best game we could."

I'm intrigued, but I've never been that big a fan of mech combat. Even modern, accessible mech games seem too clunky. Also forgot how annoying exclusives are early on when it isn't reasonable to have multiple consoles. I'm guessing they're going to make a resurgence with the new consoles trying to buy up whatever advantage they can.

I'm glad it doesn't really sound like your typical FPS. Hopefully it'll be refreshing compared to what's on the market currently.

A lot of surprises here for me. Mechs? Source Engine? PC?

Also, "Titanfall" is a terrible name for a video game.

I wonder if the kind of people who only play Call of Duty even knows who respawn is, and whether or not they'll care.

@ethanml: well you can expect a certain feel from the engine that is used in games. All Source games feel the exact same way and all Unreal game feels the same as well. It is important.

The use of the Source Engine in this context basically means nothing since, as the text says, it will be heavily modified beyond the version that has powered other games.

Source engine probably means they wanted to grab a cross-platform codebase they were familiar with (CoD still using Quake netcode) for basic stuff with mature tools, middleware hooks, and asset import options on which to build their own (or expand existing) renderer and other systems. Not to say you can't make a good looking game with the current Source engine but I wouldn't say that points to anything that'll be visible to the game player in the final title. Bit of a throwaway curiosity trivial rather than useful information.

Interested to see how good a Source Engine game looks on next-generation systems/hardware.

All you need to do is launch Steam on any 1-2 year old gaming PC.

You know what I mean, a new game that's running on a new (albeit altered) version of the Source.

Modified Source engine, that's kind of an unexpected engine choice.

I was thinking the same thing. All of this story seemed like what we expected to happen but the Source engine bit is a bit odd. How great can it really look in a next-gen sense? Portal 2 looked great but that was more art direction than raw technical power. I guess we'll see more at E3.

Honestly, this seems pretty big for Microsoft, Call of Duty 4 was huge, and a damn fine game to boot - the disinterest in Call of Duty by most of us started in earnest after these guys left . Whether or not this catches on like that did, remains to be seen - but this could be a very notable exclusive.

If it's a timed exclusive, which obviously isn't as absolute, it could still be a boon for them - generally I'm not willing to wait a year for some of the better games. As much as these cases tend to fuck consumers, Microsoft seem pretty smart in where they throw their money.

This trend of people giving a shit about what engine a game uses as its base as if they actually have any real understanding of what impact that's likely to have on the game is pretty dumb.

+1. Means nothing.

More importantly, I think people need to have their expectations in check for what these systems will be able to do. The specs suggest they will not be leaping forward past the PC, but rather catching up to where it was a year ago. Even if it was the same Source Engine from Portal 2 (it's not) maxed out on recent hardware, that will look fine for 99% of players. For the 1%, go build a PC (no snark - I'm in that boat).

Dam. That's a shame it's an exclusive. Exclusives suck for everyone.

Edit: I just reread that post and it's coming to PC as well? So it's not an exclusive then. God damn I wish people would stop saying exclusives as if the PC was not a platform. It gets really damn confusing.
