Respawn Entertainment’s First Game Is Titanfall

A leaked magazine cover confirms much of what we already knew, including Xbox exclusivity.

No Caption Provided

We knew Respawn would be revealing its new shooter at E3, but it probably wasn’t supposed to happen like this.

A NeoGAF poster subscribes to Game Informer digitally through Google Play, and the latest issue downloaded to his tablet, complete with details on Titanfall. It’s likely this issue wasn’t supposed to go live until next week, as it reveals some big news, such as the game’s exclusivity to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

A PC version is also coming, and development on the Xbox 360 version is happening externally.

The game’s being built on a heavily modified version of Valve’s Source engine, and has a huge focus on mech combat. In this world, mechs are called titans.

According to the poster, the magazine lists Titanfall’s release date as next spring.

I thought EA was forcing all of it's developers to use Frostbite?

Respawn is not owned by EA.

@formic12 said:

It's a 1 year exclusive. Give me a sec, I'll grab the link.

Actually, Just click Patrick's link to the NeoGAF poster and read.

Unless I missed something it doesn't say that at all. It says they could not develop for all the consoles at the same time so they skipped PS4 but didn't rule out getting to it later (you can read this as MS paid for timed exclusive if you wish) but I didn't see them saying 1 year.

The unfortunate side effect is that by the time they do get around to do the PS4 version; it'll be very likely that the PS4 crowd won't care or will have something better to play.

I'd laugh if the graphics settings maxed are the 360's visuals. I remember tons of PC/next(current)-gen ports doing that.

I have some faith in these guys. One look at their website shows they are filled to the brim with experienced dudes. The fact that is not just another FPS bodes well.

I'm surprised they went with xbox exclusivity, COD games typically sell around 10-12 million on the PS3. For EA, a publically traded company with an obligation (and track record) of making the very most money from a product. To walk away from all those potential sales & spin off DLC dollar...well it's very surprising.

Source engine? I know it's modified, but the source engine is pretty old. You can get decent looking stuff out of it, but it's never going to be cutting edge.

Afaik, the Source engine gets constant upgrades, for when they release stuff for Team Fortress 2, Portal 2 and Dota 2. Not to mention any new secret projects VALVe is doing.

Simply put, the engine changed significantly even from when Half-Life 2 was released and till now, hell even Team Fortress 2 on release had like 50% different engine code as it is now.

And if they say heavily modified, mean it's heavily modified, they just use it as a base, so they don't have to re-write all the stuff that makes no sense, like the render engine, netcode etc., they just add good stuff to it.

Man, MS just can t keep a surprise for E3. Seems like almost every year something leaks. The worst was probably the year Halo 4 and Halo Anniversary (and other stuff) accidentally showed up on the Xbox website less than 24 hours before they were revealed, but this is pretty bad too.

This is a strange Xbox exclusive. Thought Zampella/West wanted to break away from corporate control, but now the studio is at the mercy of MS, Valve, and EA. Weird.

I was really hoping the rumour was wrong and it would have dinosaurs. Instead we get Mechs, and exclusivity to Microsoft platforms. Right now, Destiny sounds like the next big thing to me.

Me, too. I'm really curious how they handle. That's a big part of it for me.

If this gets as big as COD and they release a new mech game every year with pretty much just a new campaign and new mechs, I'm very ok with that.

Getting tired of mechs like we have been with modern military shooters is a scary thought.

It's interesting huh? I'd argue we were there at one point. I played Ring of Red for the first time on PSN. Mechs, Grid based tactical combat, complex battle system. I was like "This is amazing! How did I miss it the first time around?!"

But back then, we had so many grid based tactical RPGs and Mech games that I felt like I could skip something like that and be fine. Little did we know the bleak Military shooter future that awaited us...

Source probably means a Steam release, right?

Either way, super unexpected and super happy to see Source getting out there. Such a good (and diverse) engine; just look at the not-FPSs like Alien Swarm and Dota.

PC Version and using the Source Engine? Oh happy day! Valve wouldn't let them use the Source engine without a release on Steam would they?

Doubt there's anything in there requiring licensees do a Steam release. The engine itself is totally separate from Steam, edit: I thought EA bought Respawn but it looks like they're only publishing it. Still, Origin seems far more likely.

@somejerk:

That's probably not true. Microsoft has right of first refusal with Bungie games (terms of deal of bungies independence). Which means, that Bungie probably went to Microsoft to publish Destiny. It was only after their refusal is when Bungie ended up at Activision.

@beaudacious: This for me is where Sony gets the edge on Microsoft. Sony Exclusives most often remain exclusives, not just on console but away from the PC as well. After their abysmal (for the core gamer) press conference they need to give us games. I currently own both 360 and PS3 but next gen I've decided to only get one console as I've shifted to mainly playing on PC, Microsoft's "exclusives" mean nothing to me if I can get them on PC anyway. One thing I do know is that PS exclusives like the new Infamous, Naughty Dog's next gen game, Media Molecule's work etc will not be on PC or Xbox.

This trend of people giving a shit about what engine a game uses as its base as if they actually have any real understanding of what impact that's likely to have on the game is pretty dumb.

I can only imagine the amount of eye rolling and sighs from developers when they read a lot of those type of comments.

Seriously though. I don't even know what the fuck an engine affects in a videogame. All I really know is that the entire industry seems to use Unreal.

@parsnip: Valve announced last year that they have been working on a next gen Source Engine and they have been waiting for the right game to show it off.

http://uk.gamespot.com/news/valve-working-on-new-source-engine-6399853

I'm guessing this is actually using that Engine, so this might be that game.

If you think about it most updates to engines are actually just heavy modifications. Take for example UnrealEngine 4. They haven't scraped anything UE 3 could already do, but improved on it and added to it. So in other words, heavily modified it. Some people just don't like putting numbers on their engines as it's pointless if you are constantly iterating and improving with every game.

I find it hard to believe that a mech game could come even close to a modern military shooter in popularity or sales, so it will be interesting to see how EA markets this as they were probably hoping the Respawn team would make something to knock Call of Duty off its throne.

Ps. phew glad they didnt just make another military shooter.

Source Engine huh, who would've guessed. Then again it's heavily modified so it's probably safe to say it won't look like HL2:EP2. Also isn't Valve rumored to be in the process of updating their engine?

Oh, right. It is an EA Partners game though since Respawn is still an independently owned company but yeah that seems like a conflict of interest too considering that Source is a Valve made engine. I don't think Valve requires the game to be featured on Steam if a developer has licensed their engine, this would probably be up to the publisher in this case. So yeah, it'll very likely be an Origin exclusive.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an EA published game that is on steam. so you never know. i'd bet it shows up on steam.

Syndicate is another third-party developed game that isn't on Steam but EA does own the Syndicate IP so there's that. You are right though about Reckoning but here's an interesting thing I found out just now while I was searching for it on Steam. I was surprised to find that the publisher listed on the Steam store is NOT EA but 38 Studios! Only conclusion I can draw from this is that they self-published Reckoning on Steam. The last big EA Partners games that they have published on Steam (that I have found so far) were Bulletstorm and Alice: Madness Returns, which are both 2011 games. The only way I can see Titan Fall ever showing up on Steam is if Respawn would self-publish it but I'm not sure though if part of their contract with EA requires them to be an Origin exclusive.

Damn, nothing since 2011? I didn't realize it went that far back.

Patrick: If it's on PC it's not a 360/XboxOne exclusive. However it still counts as a Microsoft platform exclusive since they make Windows. Please use the correct wording next time.

I'll be sad if there aren't any Iron Brigade references. It could be as simple as one throwaway line saying something like "these things are better than fighting from a hole in the ground."

I wonder what the engine choice says about the scale of the game. The Source Engine isn't exactly known for its large open levels.
