Respawn Entertainment's Game Coming in 2015? Not So Fast [UPDATED]

It won't be another four years until you're playing Respawn's game.

This is from Respawn's next game. No, I don't know what's going on in here, either.
This is from Respawn's next game. No, I don't know what's going on in here, either.

UPDATE: Hey, I was right. GameSpot heard back from McCaig, who confirmed the 2015 date was his "wildest guess" and he has "no real information" on the game's release date.

--

You won't be playing Respawn Entertainment's first game until 2015, if you believe today's headlines. The news comes out of the Develop conference in Europe, where Iain McCaig, a contracted concept artist working with Respawn, said we wouldn't see his contributions until 2015.

“I’m having the most fun working with Respawn Entertainment right now," said McCaig according to a report by Develop, "and I hate that I can’t show you guys what I’m doing there until 2015.”

Naturally, everyone took that to mean Respawn's game won't show up until 2015, either.

If you take the article at face value, okay.

The problem is there's no way to verify the tone of McCaig's comments. Was there sarcasm? Given the secrecy surrounding Respawn's project, the idea of McCaig cracking a joke about whenever his work would surface would make sense.

There's no audio or video, however, so I can't so for sure--I have to take the comments as written.

None of the evidence surrounding Respawn's activity since its formation makes the 2015 date add up. We're talking about a studio known for turning around some of the best looking and playing games within incredibly aggressive two-year cycles. After forming the company in April 2010, we're supposed to believe the finished product doesn't show up until five years later?

I don't buy it. Nothing I've heard regarding Respawn leads me to believe the 2015 speculation is accurate, and the launch of a website, the releasing of teaser artwork and the hiring of a community manager (what would they do for four years?) all point towards a company with every intention of releasing a game within a more reasoned timeframe.

I contacted Respawn about this but the studio declined to comment. McCraig has not made a follow-up statement, either.

I'll be happy to eat crow if I'm wrong.

I don't understand this at all, even if it would release at 2015 we would see some screenshots and other teasers years before like with every game.

I absolutely don't believe this is true. Especially considering Respawn was at this year's E3 in uniform. It does NOT take five years to clone a game they already made, and I refuse to believe they will make anything different.

Respawn is not a studio known for anything because it hasn't done anything yet. I'm tired of people thinking these guys are guaranteed to make a good game.

Well, being as it's the core team behind a decade or so of great FPS games, I think it's reasonable to have some high expectations.

Anyway, if this news were true, I would imagine it means they're working on a launch title for the next gen consoles. Though that still seems like a LONG time to have anybody making a shooter.

I'm sorry but 5 years since your last game is too long.

People who are on top of the world can fade into obscurity and become old fashioned in a shorter time than that. They're risking duke levels of failure here.

New studio. New tech? New tools? New offices. I would not be suprised if 2015 is accurate. New console then? That takes time to.

Bingo! My thoughts exactly. They could have just hired concept artists for early idea work for a next game, especially if they have early knowledge of next gen console hardware and want to get on the launch line-up easy money bandwagon.

I believe it. They are doing everything from scratch. It isn't easy starting an entire studio from scratch and pumping out a game in 2 - 3 years. I guess we will see.

2015 is REALLY far away.

Sure they're starting up a new company and creating a completely new IP and tech for it, but still, that's a long time!

I wouldn't be surprised if we see this as a launch or near launch title on the next generation of consoles, that would be cool to have a crazy new game to look forward to.

Ah!!!! Ha ha ha.

Those who don't know their history are bound to repeat it. And possibly miss out on inside jokes.

The number of people here misunderstanding this is pretty hilarious.

I'd just like to say that this is the first time I've seen Respawn Entertainment's logo. They used the NASA fontfor it? Ugh.

My guess is that it's some inside joke.

Actually, it's more like IW isn't IW in anything but name frankly (which is why some much outside talent was used to created MW3). Respawn is almost the entirety of IW's creative team. That sentence makes sense.

I disagree, because regardless of how many IW folks there are, Respawn as a studio aren't known for a damn thing yet.

Am I arguing semantics? Yes. Yes I am.

Seems silly to wait that long as shooters are hitting their peak, I think MMO's will be huge next generation, not necessarily subscription based but the trend is moving away from the single player fps. Plus they're not going to throw away their street cred. as the more popular Call Of Duty gets without them at the helm, the less relavent their previous works become. It sounds like a tease so we'll be more excited when they announce a game very soon!

Sounds about right to me, 4 years is about the time required to develop a game from scratch including a game engine.  The bigger question is why are they not just using the Frostbite engine?  That's the biggest reveal of that sentence.  If they used frostbite it would only take 2 years.  Further if they really are doing a new engine it means the possibility of it not being a shooter or conventional shooter is high.

I'm thinking they want to go back to Carmack and perhaps now use the RAGE engine. That would also account for the extra time required(though not 5yr extra time).

Not entirely sure this guy would say something like this when he has no idea. Pretty stupid.

Just say "I am a bit bummed that people won't be seeing my art for quite some time."

Id hope it wouldnt take that long. Kinda kills the buzz of everything thats happened which lead to the formation of this studio.
