Retailers Move Alpha Protocol To 2010

There's no official word, but with retailers moving the Alpha Protocol release to next year, it seems likely that we won't see Obsidian's latest anytime soon.

Obviously, Sega just needs time to implement this new box art before the game ships.
Late last week, retailers like GameStop began updating their databases and moving the release date of Obsidian's Alpha Protocol to sometime in 2010. As of this writing, GameStop is listing the game as a June 1, 2010 release. That's... a bit later than its last official release date, which was next week, October 6.

We haven't heard anything official out of Sega on the matter, but I wouldn't be surprised if they issued some kind of release on the topic this week, since the cat's pretty much, like, out of the bag already. Unofficially, of course.

In case you're wondering about the validity of this 6/1 date that GameStop is throwing around, don't take that too seriously. When those guys toss out a release date for a game that's not coming within the next 90 days, it's typically a temporary date... especially when the date they give falls on the first of the month. We'll have to hold tight and see what Sega has to say about the actual date. Jeff Gerstmann on Google+

If it helps them polish up the game more and give them a better chance at doing well, then I'm all for it. I'll be buying it when it comes out.

I thought the title meant there was some mass conspiracy by the Retailers to not sell the game until 2010. I was very wrong.

It sucks that the game is being delayed for such a long period of time, but if a better game comes as a result I do not mind waiting.

For those of you who play every game that gets release, this might be a good thing. People like me who don't have time to play all, or just not the interest, it's quite a bit of a letdown when Alpha Protocol was on the top 5 most anticipated games of 2009. That said, if the delay is to give the game more polish, I'm all for it.

If it comes out near the same release date as Mass Effect 2, it would really hurt AP's sales considering ME is an established IP and all

Another one bites the dust...

What about in 2010 when all these delayed games come out in a small window?

I'm sure Matt Rorie and his crazy currency counting shenanigans are the cause of this delay.

Atleast in Alpha Protocol's case, they might be going for a June release (if you believe Gamestop) which is usually a dry period for games. So maybe some good news there ?

@Killjoy: I figuered they said June because it's like saying year 2010.5

If the game is delayed to 2010, that's Jan 1 to Dec 31. The median would be June 1 (actually July 1 would be the 182nd day of the year, but that's month 7 out of 12 so it sounds weirder)

Regardless, June is just a way of saying some time in 2010.

Come on! Guess I'll just have to get Borderlands instead.

@MrKlorox: You're right, it could really be anytime in 2010. June 1 is just wishful thinking on my part. Summer is usually such a lean period for games though and given how jam-packed Q1 2010 is going to be, I think a summer release could definitely happen.

@Killjoy: Agreed. Summer releases are always welcome, IMO. Two of my favorite games of the year came out in Summer (BF1943 and Prototype). I really thought GTA4's spring release success would have made the pubs rethink their strategy. Who knows, perhaps 2010 will actually be the year they figure out for themselves that people buy games year-round.

I... For some reason know nothing about this game. I've heard talk about it a lot the past few months, but I can't bring a single detail about it to mind. Not even the genre.

Delaying a game a week before release is a dick-move any way you look at it though. Not that Sega is a stranger to that...

Edit: That boxart is TERRIBLE. THE WORST box art I have seen in years, period.

I really hope they aren't delaying it. I've been saving for this game so long, it woul really piss me off. Well' if this doesn't come out in October, I'll wait for Assassin's Creed 2

Hopefully they'll use the extra time wisely.

Man this was 1 of the 4 games i was planing to actually buy this year. Oh well even more money left over for the next year or something that is not video games.

Nnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Given how soon Alpha Protocol's supposed release date is, I'm surprised that Sega hasn't officially announced the delay yet if it's actually happening.

WHAT THE FUCK

Avoiding another KOTOR 2 mess is a good thing.

Posted by deadly_polo

well, if the delay causes a better game, then thats fine...

AND if a delay causes vinny to actually be on the cover, then all the better

Posted by Slayer

I hope the game will be released this year, but if the game is just not done than I don't  mind I rather have a great game in 2010.

Hum, between this and Trine, I feel like I've been stood up twice.  Guess AP got scared off by the behemoths of Thanksgiving 2009.
Oh well, I hopefully Borderlands and Tropico 3 will be entertaining enough till MW:2

That vinny picture is awesome.

Posted by ElectricHaggis

I've actually never seen the game look anything other than rough.  Maybe this is a good thing.

The Sega Genesis just called. It said that box art is too awesome to not be for a 16-bit cartridge.

hey alpha protocol guy sorta looks like vinnie!

NEVER.

I'd probably be pissed normally, but there are plenty of games coming out in the near future to keep me busy until it releases so... meh.

Slowly but surely, I realized there wuz something familiar about the box art besides it just only being so ugl...well, not that bad!  Pretty funny, and at this point, it would be as good an excuse as any.  i apologize to ppl. who wanted this game, it is a suck-ass move, but i think the fall gets too crowded. Sega better say that they are making incredible improvements, plays in 10D and all. Yeah, in10 Demensions..mabe 11.

Gamefly has it TBA, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Posted by RTSlord

i love the "box art," and i really hope this story isnt true, because i REALLY want this game
Posted by Lind_L_Taylor

What a load of shit!  I was really looking forward to this game, now it seems they're getting the shaft from Sega AGAIN.

Posted by vhold

This is good news, the previews they were showing looked pretty awkward, I had a feeling it was going to be an another overly ambitious game that falls down in basic execution, hopefully this saves it.
