Robert Bowling Commits Exclusive to Ouya

Zombie action game Human Element to have prequel on Android console.

No Caption Provided

Former Infinity Ward spokesperson Robert Bowling, who left this year to found Robotoki, is already promising a Ouya-only prequel to his next-generation game, Human Element.

One of the chief reasons to be skeptical of the Kickstarter-driven, Android-powered Ouya console is the lack of games. Some developers have committed games to the not-yet-realized platform, but most are expected to wait and see.

It makes some sense for a platform everyone has questions about to gain an exclusive from a game everyone has questions about, too. Bowling has said the proper game is coming in 2015.

In any case, Bowling recorded a video promising an episodic prequel to Human Element that gives players a taste of how the world changed immediately after zombies showed up. The game scheduled for the next set of game consoles actually takes place 35 years after, so it’s a significant leap back in the fiction.

Details on the game itself aren’t yet available, but Bowling said updates will be delivered to Kickstarter backers.

Everything surrounding the OUYA seems like a great big clusterfuck right now. I'll be genuinely surprised if this game is profitable.

At first I saw "Robert Bowling Commits..." and there really aren't many good things that follow the word "commit." Suicide, grand larceny, etc.

I need to learn to read faster is what I'm saying

This makes me more intrigued about Ouya, now that someone's actually behind it.

He's committing financial suicide by dedicating his newly established companies first gaming title exclusively to a new console with little hype surrounding it. I mean seriously, what is he thinking?

Open source console sounds pretty daym good to me. Glad to see that devs are trying to support it to at least give it a chance, so fingers crossed on this one ladies and gents.

intresting, but it needs more than that for bigger appeal. but i suppose its not going to try too big, just a little platform for those who like to hack and such.

Zombie Survival is the new Modern Military Shooter. Which was the new World War 2 Shooter. Which was the new Hell & Demons Shooter. Which was the new Run To The Right And Jump. Which was the new Top Down Space Shooter.

@Sammo21: To be fair though it does seem to have some originality to it setting-wise with it being set decades after a Zombie outbreak; so possibly a point where Zombies become equivalent to wild animals just roaming the environment (Of course they could complete negate that by making it an extremely-linear action game where every-other-room has a wave of zombies in it to the point where there is basically no tonal or mechanical difference to an average Zombie game). The android game, on the other hand, seems to be a much more cliché 'straight after outbreak' setting. In any case, there is quite a lot of interesting things that could be done with this idea of simply taking an outbreak and jumping a long time in the future as it would create the Fallout-like time where people now accept it as a normal way of life but without a lot of that complacency or safety that normal apocalypses get since these Zombies could be eternal and letting one through a defence could easily wipe-out an entire outpost and make the place a no-mans-land. While I am not thrilled by Zombies either (in fact I had already gotton to the point of not buying almost any Zombie game when the second Left 4 Dead came out) but this has quite a lot potential to it (especially depending on how far they go with their survival angle - conversely, I wonder if The Last of US and a string of more survival elements spreading into many genres games in 2013 and possibly 2014 will actually make me sick of the entire notion by the time Human Element comes out?)

Edit-- I read your post as "A zombie game?! Oh man, this really is showing its originality!" rather than "A zombie game?! Oh man, this console really is showing its originality!" so I thought you meant the two games rather than the console. When I look at just the console side of this story (especially picking the zombie-outbreak android prequel game as the only one I focus on) then it doesn't look very original.

Why on earth would any developer want to release their game on a system that has been described as "hacking-friendly".

"Hack" isn't an inherently negative term in the software development community. In the context of the Ouya, I assumed what they meant was that developer's will have a lot of control over the device, and won't be locked down to a small subset of "allowed" features like other consoles.

It was probably a poor choice of words for the Kickstater though, as people mostly think "hack" == "compromised security".

Oh boy a prologue to a game coming out in 3 years is the only game on this console. We're in flavor country now. And by a guy who doesn't design games, no less!

Even more evidence that the kickstarter for that atrocity was a fucking sham and just a way to get around investors so the ultra rich get richer with nobody to answer to. If this thing is profitable, it'll be like everything nowadays: Milked bone dry within 3 years and then the top people run with all the cash leaving the workers fucked.

What a lovely planet we live on

@Darkstalker: True, but you do need to hold a box to own a game. Digital entities are unfortunately ephemeral, someone pulls the plug on the right server and poof, they no longer exist.

I'm confused. Wasn't Bowling just the community head for IW? If so, why the excitement of a new game from him? And why is it important that he's supporting Ouya?

I expected to hear John Carmack announce something for it, since he's been wanting a "hackable" console for some time, but since he's been quiet I guess that says a lot about Ouya.

This is all reason to be skeptical. Bowling is a professional mouthpiece. He knows how PR works, but that has no bearing on ability to design a game, or even run a business.

Still feeling pretty good about my decision to not jump on the Ouya train just yet, that quote from Mojang vs their claims about "Minecraft is coming to Ouya!" says pretty much everything I need to know about it for now.

The fact that there is 5 million dollars pledged to backing for the Ouya gives me pause though.

This is all very strange.

What's the point for a developer to back this thing at this early stage? I'm really wondering... is this where some of the kickstarter money goes to?

I find it pretty amusing that the guy who votes for IGF and tries to be the guy on the independent scene is so steadfast against Kickstarters or crowd-funded development. I guess it's not real independent development unless the developers have a 4 year contract with Microsoft.

The entire response in this community to Ouya more broadly has been kind of depressing. It's cool to be skeptical and ask questions, but judging from the response of half the people in any thread related to Ouya you'd think Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft were given a monopoly on the video game market from God himself, and any new entrant into the scene is not just to be asked questions of, but downright pissed on and wished to fail. It's astounding. Some people around here do nothing but wish for something new, but apparently it has to be done the "right" way from the "right" people. Hint hint, nudge nudge.

Beyond this new game console I don't really remember much hate for kickstarter out of Klepek, more so I didn't see anything beyond "skeptical" and "everyone has questions about" in this article. Seems far from steadfast against.

Really, Patrick is just echoing the sentiments of a lot of people when it comes to OUYA. He's been very supporting of other Kickstarters in the past (Tex Murphy, etc.).
