Rockstar Tosses Out a Few More Grand Theft Auto V Details

Will we venture beyond Los Santos? Is there multiplayer? We have answers!

Despite having ostensibly announced Grand Theft Auto V last week when Rockstar Games put up a website teasing a week-later release for a trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, then effectively double-announcing the game yesterday by releasing the aforementioned trailer, apparently someone at Take 2 wanted to make extra-triple-super-duper-sure that everyone really knew Grand Theft Auto V had been announced, as today they released a press release once again announcing Grand Theft Auto V. So, just to be absolutely, positively, 100% clear: Grand Theft Auto V has been announced.

What lies beyond those mountains? Probably some kind of artificial world border, actually.
What lies beyond those mountains? Probably some kind of artificial world border, actually.

Normally this would be of no consequence to anyone, except that a couple of extra nuggets of information happened to be embedded in that press release. Arguably the biggest detail has to do with the game's setting, which we know already to be Los Santos, the Los Angeles surrogate established in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. We, along with pretty much everyone else on the Internet, have been wondering if the return to fake California would also mean a return to fake San Francisco, and fake Las Vegas, as featured in San Andreas. Evidently, that won't be the case. The press release specifically only mentions the city of Los Santos, and its "surrounding hills, countryside, and beaches." Presumably this will still be a fairly large environment, as the release also calls this the "largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created."

Elsewhere, a brief mention of multiplayer found itself buried in the release, ensuring that yet another online multiplayer mode will be on hand, though in what capacity, exactly, we do not know yet.

Still no sign of a release date, sadly, and the release only tangentially mentions anything related to the plot, citing a "pursuit of the almighty dollar" within the context of Los Santos' version of Southern California. Odds are it'll be a while before we get any more real, concrete details on this thing, so you'll just have to make this tiny hit last as long as possible.

And why would you need super-speed planes? To fly where? From one end of the city to another? Get your hopes up, i still think we will see the whole San Andreas.

You pursued the almighty dollar in GTA 4, then you got dollars and did nothing at all with them either mechanically or narratively.

Really? An article just to say the press release said the game would have multiplayer?

The trailer put me off. Yet another GTA character who says he wants to get away from a life of crime and focus on other things.Sounds like Nico but with a family.

Except Nico was serious. I got the distinct impression this guy was just being facetious, and he is totally okay with being a criminal dirtbag.

I think people are looking into this thing way to much. Its another GTA game, you are going to steal cars, shoot people, stab people, and there will be lots of swearing and over the top violence. I didn't know people got into the characters and particularly the multiplayer so much when it comes to these games. ALso, I don't think they are ever going to top vice city.

The worst thing about San Andreas was the unrealistic 3 minute drive it took to get to the other cities. As nice as it would be to include those surrounding cities, I can definitely see why they they aren't being included, especially if Los Santos is just as big as San Andreas was.

Awesome. As I said somewhere else, my dislike of San Andreas and fear for GTA5 was that the focus on such a large and varied environment often ends (and did end I reckon) in a rather unfocussed and forgettable environment. Too diverse to offer any coherent and memorable consistency.

So I'm pretty happy it's just one city, even if that may entail 3 or 4 epicentres!

Doesn't sound like that at all. Sounds like a dude who embraced what he did since he had no problem setting up in San Andreas with the money. Just got bored so he tried doing the whole family thing, but then opportunities arise that he can't turn down. Which is fine with him. Reminds me a lot more of Tommy Vercetti than Nico.

Just because they never mentioned San Fierro and Las Venturas, it doesn't mean they won't be there. They could just be keeping that all under wraps until the next trailer. Though, it certainly increases the possibility that we might just be looking at Los Santos. As much as I love that place (it's easily my favorite area in San Andreas), I hope we see the whole state in action.

Even though it may be bigger than the original San Andreas there is no way that they can do only Los santos where will the classic start of one island work your way around thing be, I'm still gonna play it for sure but I just don't know how I feel on a Los santos that's bigger than San Andreas anyway I mean like they did with liberty city you remake the entire place (and make it bigger a better) when I saw the trailer I was sooooo exited at the possibility of it be a new San Andreas because San Andreas is by far my most favorite gta game, I hope there just teasing us by only telling us about Los santos, knowing rockstar they are....

Fuck the mountains and make fake Las Vegas again!

I'm hearing a lot about how this game will centre around the all mighty dollar, the problem with this is no game to date has made making copious amounts of money worthwhile at all. Are they going to let you buy cars, boats and homes, will you be having to pay mortgages and cell phone bills? Hopefully they give you cool reasons to have money or else it's just a dumb concept.

Because with all previous GTA games, you eventually get so much and then realize you have nothing to do with it.

I would be happy if you just went to the airport and then warped to the other city, I don't have to drive there. I could see them not have fake San Francisco, but a small in scope fake Las Vegas would be awesome for a change of scenery.

Yes, but the entire populated area of Red Dead would probably take up 10 blocks or less of a modern day city. I thought Rockstar did a pretty good job detailing LC and I'm hoping they expand even more on LS. A three city game with the detail of GTA4 would be awesome but I don't think I want a 100GB+ game right now.

I will admit I'm kinda taken aback by the expectation of San Fierro and Las Venturas returning. Here's a secret: Los Angeles is a huge city. It's been 6 years, Rockstar could easily make a huge game out of that city alone.

Yeah, I agree. The amount of backlash against GTA IV is pretty crazy. Personally, I think it's a great game, and I'm happy to see that Rockstar seems to be ignoring the haters and continuing down the road they started with GTA IV.

At what point is that even a good thing? Its a AWESOME tech achievement sure but having that much city becomes pointless. A good game will make areas relevant and meaningful. 3 cities would just be a blur. Its better to flesh out smaller areas, and have better content so your not creating content just because you need to fill out the area.

I'd Have to agree with the camp that's thinking there's still a possibility of more than one city. The huge amount of "travel" stuff that we saw - highways, airplanes, etc, would be irrelevant unless you had somewhere else to get to. The airplanes especially to me seem to indicate there's more going on. The main reason R* said they didn't include them in IV was that with one city there was nowhere to take them...how lame would it be taking off from the airport and -short of crashing-having to fly back to...the same airport?

Put me in the "just do a really detailed Los Santos" camp.

As much as I enjoyed San Andreas, San Fierro wasn't particularly interesting (did anyone spend much time there after the missions?) and Las Venturas was the Strip surrounded by boring suburbs. Los Santos was by far the star of the show, in both size and detail.

I have no doubt this will again be a very awesomely realised, satirical reflection of a real city. And that's totally fine by me.

That gear they are wearing in the image looks modern day. If I had my own way Id prefer another period GTA set in the 70s. We've had the 80s with Vice City, the 90s with San An - We haven't had a full 3D version of the 70s yet though. The music - cars and cloths would be pimp. Not sure on the town I would choose - maybe Chicago 1977 and the start of Warehouse and Garage scene - I would even have a few skateboarding missions. Plenty of organised crime in Chicago at that time too. Who's in? :) :)

What you're describing could maybe be done if GTA3 was ported to the 360/PS3. But with a city on a similar scale to Liberty City from GTA IV, there's not a chance they could come close to anything like that.

What would be the point of going in every building anyway, what would you do?
