Rockstar Tosses Out a Few More Grand Theft Auto V Details

Will we venture beyond Los Santos? Is there multiplayer? We have answers!

Despite having ostensibly announced Grand Theft Auto V last week when Rockstar Games put up a website teasing a week-later release for a trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, then effectively double-announcing the game yesterday by releasing the aforementioned trailer, apparently someone at Take 2 wanted to make extra-triple-super-duper-sure that everyone really knew Grand Theft Auto V had been announced, as today they released a press release once again announcing Grand Theft Auto V. So, just to be absolutely, positively, 100% clear: Grand Theft Auto V has been announced.

What lies beyond those mountains? Probably some kind of artificial world border, actually.
What lies beyond those mountains? Probably some kind of artificial world border, actually.

Normally this would be of no consequence to anyone, except that a couple of extra nuggets of information happened to be embedded in that press release. Arguably the biggest detail has to do with the game's setting, which we know already to be Los Santos, the Los Angeles surrogate established in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. We, along with pretty much everyone else on the Internet, have been wondering if the return to fake California would also mean a return to fake San Francisco, and fake Las Vegas, as featured in San Andreas. Evidently, that won't be the case. The press release specifically only mentions the city of Los Santos, and its "surrounding hills, countryside, and beaches." Presumably this will still be a fairly large environment, as the release also calls this the "largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created."

Elsewhere, a brief mention of multiplayer found itself buried in the release, ensuring that yet another online multiplayer mode will be on hand, though in what capacity, exactly, we do not know yet.

Still no sign of a release date, sadly, and the release only tangentially mentions anything related to the plot, citing a "pursuit of the almighty dollar" within the context of Los Santos' version of Southern California. Odds are it'll be a while before we get any more real, concrete details on this thing, so you'll just have to make this tiny hit last as long as possible.

Finally got this quest!

Also: Vice City would have been more my style, but I'll take an interesting take on modern LA. Unlike a lot of people, I preferred the harsher trappings of GTA4 compared to its whimsical predecessors. Hopefully they don't go back on a good decision

Really looking forward to a new GTA. GTAIV was one of my favorites of this generation, as was Vice City of the previous generation.

As long as I get to kill 100 dogs instead of 100 pigeons this time I will be fine with it. It's been a while since Rockstar has pushed the boundaries in one of these games. They could call the Achievement, "The Michael Vick Kennel Club" and make it worth 50 points.

I really liked that setting in San Andreas, though I really hope it doesn't feel so gimped on features the way GTA IV did. Also curious what type of main character we'll be playing. I am optimistic though. But I feel Rockstar is sort of strongest when they give in to a specific time and place.

Just Los Santos is fine by me. Back in the day, travelling between the cities was pretty mind-blowing, but I bet if I booted up San Andreas I'd be a bit bummed by just how empty a lot of the world was. If they're just focusing on making Los Santos huge and fantastic, it will almost certainly be enough to fill a game.

Well if they continue with the episodic stuff, we may still see the other cities in the form of DLC.

Man, such a shame they didn't include the other two cities. I loved the fact that I could just hop on the interstate and cruise to a completely different area in GTA:San Andreas. It made the world look so huge, and with the way the story was structured, you always had a completely new area and environment too look forward to, all with their own characters and missions.

But still, creating a single city as detailed as Liberty City in GTAIV is a incredible amount of work already, it would be nigh impossible for them to include all three.

I am looking forward to cruising the countryside though, and climbing the mountains. I have complete faith that Rockstar will deliver something amazing.

Did they mention if the controls are still complete garbage? Seriously I never beat any of the games because after about 10 hours I just gave up.

I would rather see one really well done city than two moderately well done cities, so I'm fine with this.

As long as it's still huge I can deal with no SF or LV, but there better be a BMX and a parachute at the top of Mt. Chiliad waiting for me.

I'm hoping doing Max Payne will allow Rockstar to lean how modern games should control.

Never played San Andreas when it came. I already had a bit of GTA fatigue after Vice City. Really, very excited for this game though. The amount of detail looks pretty staggering.

I'll take one huge, believable city over three oddly small ones like in San Andreas (though that game is still great in its own way).

This is what I loved most about SA. It really felt like you got more games than one. Sure, without a fake-Vegas or fake-San Fran, they can concentrate more on making a better single city, but there was something truly delightful about having the option of traveling to a new city if you're getting tired of the main one. So, yeah, they'll be able to make a much better Los Santos, just like they did with Liberty City, but I got tired of LC rather quickly. I need variety to keep me interested, and it sounds like they're shooting for variety and larger sub-locations in LS. I suppose it's both good and bad news, depending on what you want out of the game.

That's a shame. To go along with the multiple protagonist theory, I figured there'd be three, one for each city of San Andreas. I don't doubt Los Santos won't huyage, though, and it's still a pleasing revelation to hear there'll once again be a little country side and mountain side to trek along, too.

It's understandable if they need to focus on just one city due to hardware limitations. I just they were able to put RDR onto a refreshingly large map specifically because they didn't have clusters of large buildings, etc.

But...Los Santos was the least interesting locale of San Andreas for me. Looks AMAZING in the new engine, just wish we could have that road-trip diversity offered in GTA: SA.

Lets just say I'm not gonna be especially "Chinese Democratic" about it.

Hopefully it'll be a decent sized-map but not as huge and vast as San Andreas. That map was too big for its own good.

Okay, I'm calling it. GTAV will feature:

  • Claude Speed as either a playable character or NPC
  • Shooting controls will be improved but still unwieldy
  • There will be a rocket launcher
  • Ambulances will still be BS

This is what I expected, seeing how huge the city looked in the trailer. To expect that there would be two more with just as much detail seemed like wishful thinking. Despite that there seems to be a lot of geographical variety. Who wants to bet there won't be canyon races? I can't wait.

Well, it really dissapoints me. I was kinda hoping the setting would be the whole state, not just LS. The thing that was really great aboul GTA:SA is the vibrant atmosphere it created with all that vastness of an open huge world. You could almost feel like there are no limits or boundaries.

Maybe rockstar could change their mind and make LV and SF into the game in high quality and fulfill a gamer's dream. That's definetly gonna make the game better and earn them more cash. Even if they postpone the release date, which they are inevitably gonna do anyway, as always.

Agreed. San Andreas was my favorite of the series, but there really was a lot of dead space between the cities. A more focused experience in a large Los Santos is just fine with me.

Though, i think there is still a chance that SF and LV will be back, the release only stated about LS, but it doesn't completely exclude other cities. It would be just strange and unrealistic having the countryside and nothing beyond that, just an empty void. And why would they need highways to nowhere, anyway? Come on, really... San Andreas IS a connected state and taking any city out of the game would be like pulling out a tooth from a healthy mouth
