Rocksteady’s Next Batman Game Possibly Set in the Silver Age

The setting would increase the prospect of other superheroes showing up.

No Caption Provided

I still wouldn’t be surprised if Rocksteady Studios was soon revealed as a two-game studio also prepping a Superman game (that's just me musing, by the way), but even if that’s not true, Variety’s report about the Batman: Arkham City developer working on another Batman game, this time set in the Silver Age, is exciting.

It’s just a rumor right now, but Hollywood trade Variety isn’t your average outlet, so take this one with more than a grain of salt.

The next Batman game is reportedly “highly stylized” and focuses on the first meeting between Batman and The Joker. Actor Mark Hamill has famously voiced Rocksteady’s take on The Joker in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, but Luke Skywalker has emphatically said he wouldn’t return for another game.

The Silver Age saw the original debut of the Justice League of America. Introducing more characters in a game would coincide with DC Comics’ ambitions to follow in Marvel’s footsteps and eventually have its characters united on the silver screen.

It's expected other super heroes would show up. Metropolis, for example, was mentioned several times in Arkham City, and Rocksteady has been known for hiding secrets in plain sight about its next game.

Wait, so this is supposed to exist outside their Arkham Asylum/City fiction, right?

Also, like most have said, glad to see Patrick back to work in some capacity. Keeping busy is key.

Yay Patrick.

I think this is awesome. Don't really need another super dark batman game, and it'll be interesting to see how rocksteady can change their formula to incorporate this shift in setting.

I'm wondering if this will be an actual Silver Age kinda tone or more of a Stainless Steel kinda thing where its a Silver Age story but with modern sensibilities and selfawareness. Things like Identity Crisis where all those times in old stories secret ID's ought to have been blown mysteriously didn't have any longterm effects, or perhaps a higher level something like Grant Morrison's Batman run.

Seems like there were way too many hints in AC for a direct sequel for the next game to be anything else.

This sounds great. Haven't played Arkham City yet, but I loved Arkham Asylum, and I think they could do wonderful things with the Batman of a whackier time. A Zurr-En-Arrh level would blow my mind.

I'm holding out on hope for reenactments of the various dickish comic covers, or...Composite Superman.

Seconded!

Also, this could be a very cool idea. Sorta reminds me of that Batman/Planetary crossover where they kept running into all the different Batman versions.

Oh yeah the multiversal collapse of '86. Loved that the pudgy, spandex wearing Adam West version ended up being the most dangerous.

I'm disappointed they're going back to the well with Joker. This whole concept smells of business getting in the way or creativity. I'm not saying the game is going to be garbage, it just feels like Warner stepped in and said "Do this because we need to get some hype going for Justice League." I want to know if this is the game Rocksteady WANTS to make, or HAS to make.

I'm fine with voice actors other than Hamill playing the Joker. I even like John DiMaggio's Joker better than Hamill's for the darker, more sinister versions of him. The thing I'm not stoked about is that it's still the Joker. It's been two games man, I get it.

The Arkham games have said everything that's ever needed to be said about the Joker. Can a man get some Hush? Some more Riddler in the spotlight? I'll even take a game where it's all about trying to stop Jason Todd from killing all the criminals.

It would be awesome if there is a super hidden easter egg in Arkham City that blatantly points to the direction of this game. I still remember being blown away by how long it took the community to find the hidden room in Arkham Asylum.

No me gusta more Joker. I've recently read the Killing Joke, and Dark Knight as well as Arkham City both totally fulfilled any need for the Joker in both of those mediums for a long while. With the ending of Arkham City being what it was, I'll be extremely disappointed if they go back to the Joker well for ideas.

This is really intriguing, if true. There's a lot of fun source material to play with from back then. As long as they stylize it to in the direction of the old comics themselves, similar to the Silver Age influence on the "Brave and the Bold" TV series, I'm on board. As much as I love the Arkham games, their over-edgy character design is not my favorite aspect. I don't need the Justice League looking like bondage-influenced McFarlane figures, thanks.

This sounds like a HORRIBLE idea that will have about as much appeal amongst the public at large as the Brave and the Bold did, or Joel Schumacher's fantastic takes on the Caped Crusader. Still so many story potentials in the dark world. Fuck.

EDIT: I see not all share my sentiment. While Batman is returned to his stupid past (that I actually read at the time), I hope to have some sort of alternative game like that PS2 Punisher game. Give it back to fans like me after you have gone too far and once again become focused on bat-nipples.

"Rocksteady has been known for hiding secrets in plain sight about its next game"

Oh you mean those transcoded secret radio frequencies, the hidden freighter cargo bay and a bunch of other Arkham City easter eggs that quite clearly point to Scarecrow as a major antagonist for the next game? Doesn't necessarily exclude this theory but it seems fishy.

I would fucking love to see Scarecrow as a major antagonist. Rocksteady absolutely nailed him in Asylum and I think he could absolutely carry at least a major portion of a storyline if not the whole thing.

I'll buy this game regardless but I prefer the current Batman to anything in the Silver Age. They can include Superman and JLA but I want to keep the serious, dark tone. I have faith in them.

Weird to see this but as long as the gameplay is solid as the previous Batman games they did, I'll be willing to give it a shot (though I might rent it instead of getting it at a midnight launch).

The Batman movies and games get rumored mixed up all the time, Joseph Gordon Levitt was suposedly Hugo Strange but that obviously came from Hugo Strange being a character in Arkham city.

Maybe this is news for the Batman reboot, after all they want to make a film which will be in a style suitable for a Justice League film.
