Roll Your Own Braid

The PC version of Braid has a map editor and art import tools built in. In other news, I'm about to buy the PC version of Braid.

Evie never runs out of that time-rewinding potion.

. OK, so the PC version of Braid was released not too long ago to somewhat mixed reactions due to some technical issues. It sounds like Braid creator Jonathan Blow is on the case and at work on a new version of the game. But as I saw on Destructoid earlier tonight, it sounds like there's more to the PC version of Braid than meets the eye. This bit comes from Blow himself via the game's forum on Steam:
Yeah, after I get a new version out in a few days that fixes the problems some people are having, and when more people have played/finished the game, I am going to post some documentation for the editor. The way it works is you can make levels with the editor (up to a full game, potentially) and run that with -universe later... also a tool will be released that lets you take Photoshop files and import them into the game, if you want to put new graphics in your levels.
In later posts, he goes on to say that the editor will be capable of things that weren't found in the original game. So I'm sold... well, maybe I'll hold off and see what people create once the tools have been documented. Off the top of my head, here are some things I would like to see people create for use with Braid.
  • Back to the Future: A side-scrolling Marty McFly adventure in which you can rewind time and eliminate Biff is, like, obvious.
  • Out of this World: I'm not talking about the old rotoscoped game here. I'm talking about the TV show. Here, you'd obviously play as Evie and stop time at will to cause/cure various hijinks. And Burt Reynolds plays the voice of your alien father.
  • Soulja Boy: Well, certainly you saw this one coming from a mile away...

OK, there are three of the greatest ideas in the history of the world to get you started. So get your graph paper out and start thinking about how you will design levels based around these concepts, then get cracking, people! I want to play new levels, but I have zero ambition when it comes to designing and implementing levels myself!

I don't think comparing the games is fair. LBP is primarily a platformer with a robust level editing set that really teaches you how things work and blah blah blah Stephen Fry.

Braid is a puzzle game that uses the mechanics of platforming for solving puzzles. This level editor is more basic, and definitely not as easy to use.

Wouldn't we actually tie our own braid? Maybe that wouldn't make any more sense. Braiding your own braid just doesn't sound hip. Whatever. Point is: save your rolling for the katamaris. Or is it katamarii? Or just the katamari? I'm as stumped here as I was when I played that game. TELL "EM!

I wouldn't want to make any levels myself but I'd love to see what other people can do and we're bound to have some good levels.

I tried the level editor.
What I managed to do was create a huge black canvas with nothing on it.

I tried creating a cloud, but the graphic wouldn't show up and there was nothing there to click.

I'm really into creating my own levels. I loved Warcraft III's World Editor. I made a bunch of LPB maps, but this editor was so user-unfriendly that it just scared me. I tried for like 10 seconds before I gave up.

Loved the game though. Played through it twice in a day!

After reading the above article, I think I've become more obsessed with "Out of this World".  I don't remember that show at all, and I saw every episode of Herman's Head, Parker Lewis Can't Lose and My Two Dads, so I was open to crap TV in the '90s...

Oh, holy crap, I completely forgot that this existed!  I used to love this show when I was a kid.  I just now got back from you tube where I viewed the intro with my mouth agape.  It's like you just reminded me of a lost memory that I had suppressed for reasons unknown.  Uh, thanks for that, I guess.  Wow.

Again, wow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VafQtxQgtOo

I hear the editor is insanely complicated though.  I guess we'll see if anything comes of it down the road.

LiquidPrince So Braid is evolving into a smaller version of LBP?

No no, you have it all wrong. What you mean is; Braid is doing what pretty much all PC games do, which is come with level editors or at least an easy method to modify the game files.  This isn't anything new on the PC platform.

So, it is good, and possibly worth buying even if you have played the original, I know I am tempted too.

This revelation of it being like a sort of, Little Braid Planet, sounds pretty neat, I would love messing around with that thing.

Back to the Future HAS to be created, but don't forget to put Doc Brown getting shot up by some libyans in a Volkswagen bus, that part is key.

Now, I was always confused... was that really Evie's father inside the glowy alien crystal thingy, or was it just a communication device? And if so, where the hell was Alien Burt Reynolds? Goddamn deadbeat...

PC gamers usually complain that games come out later than the other platforms, well, this is why that rocks.
