Ron Gilbert's Game at Double Fine Is... Puzzling

The pieces, however, are falling into place!

Today a featureless cardboard box arrived at the office, sent by one "Double Fine." Inside was this...

...which I quickly assembled into this.

OK, so the image pretty much speaks for itself, but since Ron Gilbert has a great track record and Double Fine has been spinning straw into downloadable gold for a couple years now, I know my interest is piqued. It's never too early to start speculating about exactly what this game is gonna be, so whatcha got?

The real question is: How long did it take Brad to complete the puzzle?

He went at it for about an hour, then Ryan stepped in and just did it in 30 seconds flat.

Brad also died ten times whilst trying to put the pieces together. I didn't even think it was possible to die whilst putting a jigsaw puzzle together; well, you learn something new everyday.

To be fair to Brad, for the first 30 mins. he didn't really know what he was looking at. After he realized it was a puzzle, he only worked at it for about 20 mins. before Ryan helped (put it together for him) out.

But yeah, he did die a bunch.

I think Brad later complained on twitter that the reason why he was having so much trouble was that there wasn't a good tutorial and the damn thing didn't come with a manual. Now that he's seen Ryan's advanced technique of "locking" the pieces together, future puzzles won't take him nearly as long.

All I needed to see was Double Fine. Now let me dig around and find that image of Phillip J. Fry saying "Shut up and take my money"...

I'm guessing 2D (co-op?) side-scrolling adventure game about digging up aliens and dinosaurs.

Guys, remember how DoubleFine trademarked "Cave" a while ago? And do you notice how all of these characters are standing in a goddamn cave?

I think that might be a hint at the name of the game. Possibly.

I love Ron Gilbert, but good God, I'm tired of this whole "Solve this puzzle to see a screenshot of our game" bullshit. Either market the game or don't. Grow up for fuck's sake.

Woah, calm down. It's an advertising technique - how he wants to advertise his game. Is he asking every single person in the world to solve this puzzle? No. Brad's done it for you, and now it's just the same as every other release/reveal poster, but more interesting. It's generating attention because it's not just another poster.

This has nothing to do with 'growing up'. Nothing he's done is considered immature, or childish, or whatever. In fact your being hypocritical if anything... video games are usually considered to be targeted to a younger audience so depending on your age... your pretty much telling him to grow up for making a puzzle while you go play Hannah Montana Karaoke on your Wii (see what I mean?).

I could understand where you were coming from if he was asking individuals to solve his puzzle before they could play a game or something but he's not. He's sent out a puzzle to the media, gained a lot more attention and even got news storys posted on big video game websites solely about his game. That's a massive increase on what would of happened if he was like, "hey, new game coming" on twitter.

Great, not Brad is going to stealth post his feelings on neogaf about people knocking him for dying while putting a jigsaw together.

Ah, so many words to try to convince to I'm wrong. You'll go far on the internet.

Alas, I will not, for I have chosen to stand by my opinions and convictions and not give in when confronted with one of those old internet favorite standby words like "hypocrite".

However, having re-read my statement and now being calmer and soberer (more sober?) I see that I probably could have stated my point with a little more eloquence.

What I was trying to convey is how it seems to me that the whole ARG way to promote games is starting to stink more and more of corporate greed.

It just feels like it's becoming one more thing that corporate execs can to point to for their shareholders and say "Look!! See how many people are interacting with our product?!! Aren't we doing such a good job?!?"

Don't get me wrong, I understand that video games are a business and the balance between the corporations and the creatives is a hard one to maintain, but, being a creative myself, I tend to lean a little harder on the dudes in the business suits. I could do a whole blog post on that topic, and perhaps I shall, but now is not the time.

As I said, I love Ron Gilbert and I'm sure he's not being controlled by any CEOs, CFOs, COOs, or BBWs, so perhaps I chose the wrong venue to state my feelings. I will lament this fact far into the evening hours.

Until later, friend.

I'm wondering how much time will be devoted to their kickstarter project, since the announcement of this game partnership (and/or which one will be completed first).

@Irishranger: actually i almost share your sentiment but not with this humble puzzle .. im scared of every single game trying to cash in on Fez like puzzles within puzzles within puzzles, added charm thats great until corporate greed tries it dry :/

@Riboflavin: Oh, that's cool. I appreciate it whenever one of my posts can elicit an emotion besides blinding rage.

@envane: Yeah, like I said, I feel bad bringing this up on a story about a Ron Gilbert game, because I really do love the guy. Perhaps I should have brought it up on the mailbag video where they unboxed the Dishonored clock. I heard that's another "puzzle" for game info thingamabob.

But, anyhoo, moving on with life.
