Rumor: Gearbox Software To Finish Duke Nukem Forever

Look, I know this sounds weird. Just stay with me.

If you thought the Duke Nukem Forever saga was over when 3D Realms and Take-Two settled their legal differences, you were (possibly) wrong. Kotaku is reporting that a build of the fabled shooter is now in Gearbox Software's hands, and the full game will eventually come to market.

Sounds like a long shot--and it feels like it is, considering this is DNF we're talking about, a game that has been in development for over a decade--but apparently this rumor is crashing against some sort of truth. Speaking with Kotaku, Gearbox head honcho Randy Pitchford said that he would be able to "clarify" (the pub's words) this alleged involvement at PAX West in Seattle. He declined direct comment.

Gearbox Studios is the developer of Borderlands and currently working on Aliens: Colonial Marines. It has been connected with rumored high-profile titles before, including a continuation of Halo, a game based on the film Heat, and a Duke Nukem prequel.

Take-Two still owns the publishing rights to DNF, a game it has presumably lost a ton of money on as its development stretched out over eons. And Gearbox and Take-Two have worked together before, most notably with Borderlands.

While I'd like to just shake my head and say "no way" about this rumor, despite Pitchford's weird comment on the matter, this game already has a legacy linked with the strange, so we'll have to wait and see what the truth is on this latest development.

Don't play with my heart.

I would love the game to just be about the release of itself, and duke being fed up with all the bullshit. Or have each level of the game look and play differant with various assets from all the differant incarnations

Really, we're doing this again huh?
Who said there never were great news on giantbomb anymore.

soon.

After the quality of Borderlands, I'd be way more interested in seeing Gearbox do another original IP.

DN: Forever needs to die.

PAX is in September.  Not later this month.  ROOKIE!

Posted by adoggz

man, what is up with gearbox and game development rumors.

Edited by Scratch

Even if Gearbox ends up finishing and releasing the game. Wouldn't you always be curious to know if that's how 3DRealms wanted the game to be? Would you be satisfied knowing that the game might have been different if 3DRealms had finished it?

i'd much rather see Colonial Marines than DN

Posted by slowbird

I hope it's true, even if it sucks then we can be done with this seemingly endless saga.

Fuck me! Just die already!

This....

I will not belive this until I have it in my hands, installed it, and played a second of it. Then, maybe, but just maybe, I will belive it, I might need some pinching first in case it is nothing but a dream.

If they throw in the Borderlands loot mechanic, I'm interested. Otherwise, this is just a follow-up to a game that I god-moded and no-clipped through back in high school

also, rgr that.

borderlands is badass, i'm still working thru the DLC and loving every minute of it, but even if gearbox did make duke nukem i still wouldn't buy it, don't care.  an aliens FPS on the other hand, i'd buy day 1
Posted by MrAriscottle

Meh. It'll be cool if it comes out and Gearbox have a pretty good track record and actually ship games.

Posted by kmdrkul

Duke Nukem Forever will never die.

Posted by ravuya

I can only imagine the legal wrangling that's involved in doing an IP transfer and development pick-up like this. Hopefully if it is real, Gearbox is given the time to make it really awesome.

Posted by Deathmachine117

Id rather see a new borderlands, aliens colonial marines and even a new Brothers in Arms before id pay for that game.

Posted by Deusoma

Well, I'm way more interested in a resurrected Duke Nukem Forever than I am in yet another mediocre Aliens game, gotta say.

FUCK

Posted by RE_Player1

I can't wait :D

Posted by Yelix

Let Gearbox build their own game out of the name. I don't want to see them polishing up some code that's probably two years old at this point and farting it out into stores.

Duke Nukem Forever is like Grigori  Rasputin... No matter how you try to kill him, he refuses to stay dead for long. Can this saga get any more ridiculous?!

Ugh....

Here is for another ten great years of Duke Nukem Forever.

Glad to hear DNF might see the light of day, but it breaks my heart that such a horrible development house like Gearbox has to be the one to get their hands it. After the travesty that was Borderlands on the PC I have zero faith in their ability to make a game that is not broken and dead on arrival.

I love the continuing DNF saga!

Genuinely excited.

Posted by DG991

I hope it's true. And I hope it rocks my socks.

Gearbox is the Obsidian of first person shooters.

Posted by Cirdain

Could I request them to fix The Saboteur. I loved that game.

People who still care about Duke Nukem need to see a medical proffesional.  Seriously.
Posted by Protome

This would be good. A studio that isn't run by a bunch of scam artists making the game? Colour me interested.

Posted by Little_Socrates

I'm curious, other than the fact that it's been so long, why do we really care about this game?

Posted by artofwar420

Just release it and put the "forever" to rest.
