Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

No Caption Provided

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

Been watching a lot of older content recently. I wasn't using the site before we lost Ryan (in fact it was tributes to Ryan that led me to the site) but even watching the content after the fact I can't help but miss him. Ryan bought such an energy to everything that he did which influenced those around him and produced a lot of great memories.

Top three Ryan moments in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 video review:

1) "Or should I say faceship? hahaha"

2) "With that long tongue that makes him so popular with the ladies."

3) Pronouncing "projectiles" like "projectles."

Understanding the subtleties of Taswellian language: robot = "robit," sword = "sward," projectile = "projectle."

Still miss you Ryan :/

I come back here every so often just to see what people are saying. I just don't know what else to do when I get that feeling, that Ryan withdraw.

Sigh.

@xeirus: Watch some old videos with him in and just sit back with a drink and admire him at his work. Nobody else does it like Ryan did, made it all so effortless. One of the very best.

So much time has passed, but it still hurts. When I first saw the announcement, I remember thinking/hoping the GB guys were just being major assholes and it was all a horrible prank. I never knew Ryan, but I considered him my friend. As I explained it to my girlfriend in 2013, I spent 3-4hrs a week listening to him talk; that's more time, more consistently, than I spend with all but my closest friends. He was one of the best men I've encountered, and the world is so much dimmer for not having him in it.

I was perusing through Ryan's twitter, enjoying seeing the joy of the man living his life, and then I came across one that just broke me:

QFT. Interestingly, this is exactly what I also say anytime I talk about Ryan to people who don't know about this sort of stuff.

I have been time travelling with the "This Year Collection" Podcast, an 'aggregate-podcast' that, as the title points to, makes a compilation of the best moments of a year from a certain podcast into one longform podcast. They have made one for each of the past ten years of duder-podcasting, starting first with the Gamespot HotSpot and later the Bombcast. I have just gotten to the part two of the 2013 one, and now, the passing of Ryan gets closer. I am kind of tearing up as I write this.

As much as I have a weird sensation sensation of loss for someone I never knew, it's also the fact of his joy, light and energy but also relentless non-bullshit-takery not being present in this world anymore. It sounds stupid, but I really try to incorporate this presence into my own life.

Here are the links to seperately:

Hotspot 2005, Hotspot 2006, Hotspot 2007, Giant Bombcast 2008, Giant Bombcast 2009, Giant Bombcast 2010, Giant Bombcast 2011, Giant Bombcast 2012, Giant Bombcast 2013, Giant Bombcast 2014, and then, also a Memorial For Ryan Davis.

Miss you Ryan. Although I never got to meet you, and although I only started following the site around the time of your passing, listening to a lot of your older, hilarious bits on youtube just makes me feel even more like I've lost a friend. Wish you were still here.

The other day my girlfriend and I were hanging out and I noticed Ryan's name pop up in Spotify. It happens time and again as I would assume Anna (Ryan's wife) logs on occasionally to browse through his library and feel close to him again, so it shouldn't surprise me to see his name pop up at this point, but it always does.

My girlfriend isn't into games, but she knows I'm huge into them and huge into Giant Bomb. She wears my Giant Bomb hoodie more than me at this point, and she's always pretty interested to see or hear clips of the guys to get a better idea of why I like them so much. One time she commented about how she sees how it'd be easy to feel kind of like you're friends with them. Sometimes I play her a random funny clip from a podcast, sometimes I show her a video, we'll peruse their Twitter accounts, or even listen to the random episode of Danswers. So when I responded to her asking what's wrong by mentioning Ryan's name, she immediately knew why it gave me pause to see his account being used.

We spent the afternoon watching some fun videos of Ryan, like when they all did the Mythic Coke Challenge, when the Pac-Man Fever guys wrote a Giant Bomb song and Ryan fell over laughing, and the video where Jeff filmed Ryan laughing as a pile of fake money burned in front of him. We watched Mark Ruffalo read Ryan's mean tweet (which surely would've made Ryan ecstatic had he been around for it) and browsed through Ryan's Twitter feed for a while and had bittersweet laughs at how stoked he seemed to be able to use the word "WIFE." Then we looked through the released wedding pictures for a while, and it just got too much.

Fuck I still miss that goofball.

I think next time I'll show her the video of Ryan gleefully flushing the pie. I fucking love that video.

I dread this summer around late june early july. on July 3rd I will have my annual time of heartbreak because of Ryan's death which I never had last year...as I was head deep in a death more close to home, my own father battling cancer for 8 months and it all seemed good untill a steep decline in health was taken, I was too exhausted last year I simply looked at a photo of Ryan and said to myself...maybe him even. "I do not have the strength for you this year." I hope things go well enough this year so the heartache is lessened some how come this time.

In a lot of ways Ryan was the driving force behind a lot of Giant Bomb content. I think Ryan was in a way the unofficial master of ceremony at Giant Bomb who got other staff members involved in all kinds of stuff. I am not sure but i think that stuff like mailbag and the streams that they did on thursdays were mostly Ryans ideas.

Ryan was also the undisputed master of being the one in control during the podcasts. While Brad is decent at it he still cant touch the brilliance that was Ryan Davis. That man could control the conversation withouth people noticing that he was doing so.

While Patrick, Dan,Jason and Austin have been good additions to the Giant Bomb staff I still would trade them all for Ryan Davis in a heartbeat. Pouring one for you Ryan.

Last week, I listened to the very last Bombcast Ryan was on. I listened to it when it first came out, but listening to it now was very odd, especially based on the topics that were covered. I definitely still miss him as if I knew him personally.

Here I am, sitting on a wednesday, now thurdays, morning at 04:32 and thinking about Ryan. It still feels unreal how much influence he has had on my life, even though I've never talked to or met the man himself.

I don't know why, but tonight I thought about Ryan more than I ever had after his passing. I think I finally realised how big of an impact he has had on my life. I started watching Giant Bomb from the beginning, in 2008. I was 16 at this time, an age where I was in the middle of the good old "teenager-what-is-life/whatever"-situation, and boy was I glad that Giant Bomb was my anchor during that period of my life. Now 8 years later (I just realised that's a long time), I know that Giant Bomb, and the people behind it, has helped define who I am today more than I would ever have imagined - and I can't thank them enough.

As of this writing, Ryan Davis had been a weekly constant for roughly a third of my entire life. A constant that has been missing for 2 and a half years now. You can't say that about a lot of people. No wonder I miss him.

Thank you.

After this PAX wrestling, I started thinking how Ryan would fit into all of that, maybe a desk man alongside Trites and Pope or with Pat as a ref? Its weird thinking that he hasn't been around since 2013, miss him still : (

@thurbleton: I think he's actually the only one who would've had enough common sense to stop the whole thing before it became the travesty that we know and love today, tbh.

Yeah it's been there for a while, they need someone to step in and say "fellas? C'mon . . ." It doesn't have to stop just take it down a few notches. I think Ryan would have seen it coming and steered it somewhere better.

Dang, how is it 3 years.

Today I thought "it's someone's birthday that I know". Sure enough it was Ryan. I spent time this Saturday watching of my favourite videos of Ryan. Missing him so much around here. His talent for making me laugh hasn't waned. I keep wishing we could get some of Ryan's thoughts on 2016. I want to hear Ryan and Jeff talk energy drinks, bootleg arcade games and their disdain for Mr. Resetti.

Happy Birthday Ryan. Lots of love for the GB community that remembers you today.

With years worth of reflection, I honestly believe the Bombcast has never been the same since. The banter between Jeff and Ryan specifically made those years extremely special. Jeff is at his best with somebody like Ryan to feed off. I love all the staff, old and current and all the work they do.

Ryan will forever be missed.
