Giant Bomb News

Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

Ever since I heard the news, I've been sitting at my desk at work in stunned silence a bit teary eyed. I, like most people on the site, never knew Ryan, but his fun personality and candidness about pieces of his personal life made him seem like an old friend.

I'm weeks behind on Bombcasts and it's heartbreaking to know there are only going to be a few left with Ryan. Genuinely sending thoughts and prayers to Ryan, friends, and family.

Despite it being ridiculously hot outside, I'll be sporting my New Balance shoes in memory of Ryan for the remainder of the week. Rest in peace, Ryan.

I never thought I would feel this sad about the passing of a person I have never even met. Ryan Davis had the rare gift of making people care about something. We need more people like that. Goodbye Ryan.

Words fail to express such a loss. Whenever I was at a low point any GB content with Ryan would turn things around. Gaming and society has lost someone truly great. Condolences to his wife, family, coworkers, and all his friends.

I've wrote about 4 paragraphs and then deleted them because everything I put will not sum up what I'm trying to say.

Although hardly any of us got to meet you, you were like a friend to us and you will be missed terribly.

Thanks for always making me laugh. Rest in peace, Ryan.

"Hey, everybody, it's Tuesday!"

It's painful to realize that we will never hear those words from him again. It's the passion that guys like Ryan brought to Giant Bomb that inspired me to become deeply passionate about this hobby and industry, during a certain low in my life. As Nick Robinson said, it says a lot about the work Ryan has done that so many of us internet strangers feel like we've lost a real blood relative.

Thank you Ryan for making the world a more joyful place, and my best wishes to his friends and family during these hard times.

Fuck... Ryan Davis...

Why'd you have to go? :(

There's such an air of unreality, but as it clears.. Man. This feels terrible.

I am honestly devastated by all of this.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Ryan's family, friends and the whole GB crew.

This has been a tough year for me but Giant Bomb and Ryan gave me joy and helped me get through it. This is a loss for not only for his friends and family but everyone who enjoyed Video Game journalism.

Rest In Peace
