Sega Abandons Notion That Anyone Wants More Aliens: Colonial Marines, Cancels Wii U Version

In case you were wondering why the Wii U port missed its launch window, now you know!

If you're the person still looking forward to Aliens: Colonial Marines on Wii U, I have some unfortunate news...
If you're the person still looking forward to Aliens: Colonial Marines on Wii U, I have some unfortunate news...

The ongoing saga of Aliens: Colonial Marines had mostly gone dormant in the last month or so, following weeks of post-release grousing about its miserable quality and the ludicrous development history that got it there. However, there was one last, dangling little detail left uncertain. Specifically, the Wii U version, which was reportedly still in development at TimeGate Studios. It was supposed to come out prior to the end of March, but then it just kind of didn't. Now we know why.

According to Kotaku, Sega has confirmed that development on the Wii U version has ceased altogether. This follows the game's removal from listings on several European retailers' websites.

It's a lame, but perhaps fitting final note for a game that seemed to disappoint pretty much everyone. At one time, Gearbox was touting the Wii U version as the best looking of the bunch. Now, we're essentially being told that staring into the cold, empty void of nothingness is a preferable outcome to that of playing more Aliens: Colonial Marines. Yeah, I'd say that sounds about right.

One day someone will realize that a good Aliens game can't just be a generic shooter and make an interesting one. One day. Maybe. But probably not.

I could go for an X-Com style turn based game set in an alien Universe with more event based maps instead of big square rooms. Would make the permadeath/small squad thing work out well too. Like from the get go you get a set number of people sent in to explore a space station and you gotta send people out to uncover the secret to how it all happened/survive until the escape ship comes and you get no re enforcements at all. Make it a research base so that you have an excuse to find unlocks and upgrades as you go along. Throw in some soldiers that come pre-ranked up and a bunch of rookies. If all of your people die it's game over. Man.

I really wish they had embraced Obsidian & built that Aliens RPG that they had on offer. It seems that whenever Aliens(c) is involved in some new movie, game, or merchandise, the people in charge are the worst kind & always make the worst decision for the brand. They don't seem to care what happens to it despite what they might say or do, with all the high praise, prior to its release. I felt that way, after seeing Aliens 3, Resurrection was better, then everything else afterwards has been pretty awful. I think an original XBOX came out that had some sort of Aliens RTS that looked like it could have been interesting. Sadly it was one of those games that couldn't run on the 360.

Maybe Firaxis could license an Aliens(c) DLC in their XCOM Enemy Unknown game? I'd pay for that. I'd love to have my squaddies blow 'em away.

I really liked this Aliens title, I mean it wasn't beautiful or perfect or anything, but being a fan of the movies I had a lot of fun with the game. I only red boxed it but Im sure Ill pick it up when it's price drops, hopefully there will be some people still playing online.

The game could be reworked, but it'll never be top of the line again.

I'd rather play nothing.

While I have little trouble believing this particular claim, there's still something that really itches at me about the idea of Giant Bomb using Kotaku as a primary source for a news story. Ugh...

Having an equivalent to the Associated Press on the internet is a completely pointless endeavor, so this is what we get instead. The fact that someone else got to a story first doesn't mean it isn't newsworthy. This is the result.

I'm not saying it isn't newsworthy, friend. I'm saying it isn't trustworthy. When I see someone cite Gawker as their primary source for information on an article, I strongly hesitate before believing anything written in it. I'd feel more confident trusting an article if they didn't cite anything, and just presented their story without a name to back it up.

@def: To each his own. All histories are subjective to a greater or lesser extent.

Someone else put it well on the Gamespot forums when they said that Nintendo have been trying to tell consumers how they think gaming should be done rather than listening to the market. With the Wii they hit upon something acutely poignant - I remember that moment when I first played Wii baseball and thinking, "Jesus... what a great idea" - but in the fullness of time the Wii was revealed to be a largely empty gimmick. The best game I ever played on that system was Resident Evil 4, and that was a tarted-up port of a GameCube release.

Where we will intractably disagree is over the issue of Nintendo bleeding their fans dry. I have been one such fan - I am still, just about - and I have a drawer filled with controllers that Uncle Ninty fucked me into buying down the years. And I swear I've paid to own Super Mario Bros. 3 at least four times in my life...

Probably just as fake as every other demo they ever did for this game.

Possibly - but there's a good chance that the cost of distribution and publishing alone would make it not worth the cost to ship and recoup any kind of profitability because the game sold so terribly and was critically lambasted so poorly.

No it was never demoed at any first party press conference. It was merely in the E3 2011 "upcoming games" montage in Nintendo's presser. According to rumors, though, it was supposed to be demoed last year at their presser instead of Arkham City but the version wasn't ready (especially funny knowing what we know now).

@spiritof: Yeah, I'd say the writing's on the wall.

My WiiU is already becoming what my Wii eventually became - a party/emulation machine - which is fine for me, but won't cut it for many other gamers. I'm very fortunate to earn a good income, and I can write-off that £400 as a lesson learned.

There'll be the odd release to look forward to - the Director's Cut of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, for one - but otherwise, this console seems certain to fail. Which is a shame...

... but, then again, maybe it isn't such a shame. I've owned every Nintendo console since the Super NES and, for me, the lustre's been flaking off with each passing generation. It's my feeling that Nintendo have been slow to 'move with the times' - the N64 should've had a CD drive but they stuck with cartridges, the GameCube should've had a DVD drive but they... they... well, whatever-the-fuck *that* was, and they've since released two manifestly underpowered consoles under the proud banner of 'innovation', one of which was kinda-charming and managed to pull the wool over everyone's eyes, the other of which wasn't and didn't.

Plus - if I may borrow from the vernacular of the great Mel Brooks - Nintendo have been raping the shit out of their faithful userbase for decades: recycling their classic IPs and selling them back to us at premium rates, cluttering our living rooms with extraneous plastic peripherals that cost a shitting fortune, and *never* saying sorry.

So, maybe it isn't a shame at all. Maybe Nintendo are institutionally arrogant, and they had it coming...

Oo You have a very weirdly skewed perception of history.

I think this was probably the right move on Sega's part. I'm not sure who would actually want a copy of Aliens: Colonial Marines for the WiiU anyway. The demographic for that would be like: the masochistic shooter 80's fanboy manchild. Though, I'm just talking out my ass here. Maybe that demographic is huge.

Not surprising. I don't think Sega would want to do business with Gearbox ever again, if the rumors of transferring funds from Colonial Marines to Borderlands 2 are true.

The game wasn't as bad as made out to be. Yes it was poor, tired, rehash of cliched gameplay, devoid of any real challenge. But with a friend(s), it was mildly passable. Not necessarily offensive.

That sounds like a pretty bad game if you ask me. And everything is better when you play with friends so I don't think that negates the fact that this game is pretty bad.

I mean, yeah, I get that this is a story about Alien Colonial Marines, but I don't know, this just seems like more Wii U not-looking-so-healthy news. If the version that hadn't launched yet had been the 360 version, you can bet they'd have pushed it out the door.

I think the implication wasn't the WiiU version sucked so bad it wasn't fit for release but that nobody is going to buy an inherently shitty game on a system that nobody wants.
