Sequel To Red Orchestra Announced

Tripwire announces a sequel to their popular WW2 Eastern Front sim is coming soon.

Over the weekend Tripwire, maker of the upcoming Killing Floor survivor co-op game, announced on its message boards that it is working on a sequel to Red Orchestra. Titled Heroes of Stalingrad the new Red Orchestra game will use Unreal Engine 3. Unfortunately there aren't any details other then those at the moment. As a fan of the first game this is extremely good news as Red Orchestra is up there with Counter-Strike as one of the longest running mod-turned-games out there. Its more simmy approach to combat also introduced a huge amount of now standard gameplay elements into shooters like forcing the player to use iron sights. Here's the full announcement:

Ok, here is the official statement on the game for now. Yes there is an article about our new UE3 game Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad in the UK and US PC Gamer magazines. Frankly, we're more than a bit surprised at the timing of the release of the article. To put it quite bluntly we thought this would hit after the release of Killing Floor. As such we'll be doing a bit of a scramble to get our PR efforts in order while we are in the middle of getting another game ready to ship.

I know many of you have been waiting a very long time for this news, and I am very happy that we can finally confirm what we've been working on these past three years. RO:HOS (as we call it) is real, its using UE3, and its awesome Just bear with us while we recover from this unexpected announcement and in the immortal words of Battlestar Galactica - all will be revealed.

For now, we're not going to say anything else about the game. We'll let the article speak for itself. As Alan mentioned please don't post scans of the article on this forum. Additionally, please don't post quotes of text from the article on these forums. Our proper PR effort will begin in earnest soon, so you'll get more from us on that in the coming days.

That's cool, I'll definitely be in for $20 or less.  Played the first Red Orchestra a decent amount.  Still think the "lean on stuff for steady aim" mechanic should be used in more shootin games.

I think Call of Duty introduced iron sights in 2003.

Is it going to be as realistic as the other one? If not, no buy.

RO is the only game I have ever played that I got consistently pwned at. Epic battles though.

I wasn't sure about the iron sights stuff as well but I do remember them heavily marketing it. Operation Flashpoint definitely had some but it wasn't a must use for every weapon, of which, I believe Red Orchestra may have been the first.

Love to here some feedback on that one as I was curious as well.

Red Orchestra definitely didn't "introduce" use of iron sights nor did it necessarily make that a standard practice. I think COD went gold before RO became retail. But yeah, it's a great game, and this is very exciting news. Here's to hoping they improve the vehicular combat, make it more fluid like in the Battlefield series. I also hope they add entering and exiting animations to the vehicles, it would make it harder for a crew to ditch their tank before the last shell hits, and improve immersion.

For sure. If you've ever fired an actual gun, you'd know that leaning is essential to decent accuracy unless you have Arnold Schwarzenegger biceps.

Yeah, I think the 'big deal' about RO was that you couldn't use a crosshair even if you wanted to..... right?

Another game I picked up in a steam sale and never got around to playing.

Red Orchestra does not have a crosshair and you won't hit dick without using the sights, so yeah, it forces you to use the sights.  Doesn't really mean it introduced the "forcing" though.

Played the mod back in the day but never picked it up when it went retail. Not sure I'll be into this, WWII is now officially overplayed.

You can always count on Dave to write about good games most people dont know about!

I always admired Red Orchestra...never liked playing it online.

Looking forward to the Killing Floor re-make.

If they can make it a bit faster paced, then I think it would be great. The first was extremely realistic and well done, but I didn't like how you slowly plodded along unless you were sprinting.

I liked the first, and this should be a good sequel. And, yeah, I believe it was COD that did the iron sights mechanic first.

I HATED the original games cheap ass "realism".  All it ended up being was frustrating and no fun.  I'm finally glad the guys who made the game will actually do something different from the original game.  This is the same reason Insurgency was ruined for me as well, RO in the middle east.

I know there's a lot of people who love the game and I'm not hating on them but I can't let that be used as an excuse for what I think it just a janky game.

Someone doesn't appreciate good gaming.
