Skyrim Actually Getting Kinect Voice Support

I think this looks good. It shows Kinect being used smartly. Perhaps because it's just voice commands and not waving everywhere.

why dont they just be able to give an option of using a mic as well as the Kinect

It's funny seeing people say that this is the most interesting use of kinect when it would probably work better with a headset.

@Apocralyptic: Have you tried the voice support in ME3? I have a feeling if you had you wouldn't make that type of comment, because it's actually pretty great. It made combat a lot more fluid and since it removed having to bring up the power wheel to fire off squad powers (beyond what you had hotkeyed obviously), I found myself using all of my powers instead of just the ones that were assigned to left or right on the D-pad. I also ended up actually issuing squad commands for flanking and taking up defensive positions, which is something I never bothered doing before trying out the Kinect support. Kinect support like this is great, and I definitely approve of more games giving you this option.

@This_Dude: I tried it for the first 5-10 hours I played the game. It was passable as long as things didn't get too hectic, but on Hardcore or Insane, once shit started to get real it was a lot faster (in terms of game time) and more reliable to bring up the command ring and enter the commands manually. I did feel it made the game more "immersive", but given the choice between (a) immersion and (b) getting murdered because a squad member didn't listen or took to long to respond, I'll choose the option that keeps me from having to see another loading screen.

The fact that voice control has become the only "core gamer" feature of the Kinect is incredibly stupid, what an expensive microphone.

what about kinect support on PC that would be funny. Might as well add support for the novint falcon while theyre at it.

See, I don't want to be saying "Ally attack." I want to be saying "Lydia, attack those archers in the back." I'm not interested in saving a few button presses - I'm interested in games attempting to move forward with AI.

For a Mass Effect example, if I name my dude Rick Shepard, I want the game to be able to use his first name when appropriate. If i name him Wrealjtum Shepard, then I want the machine to ask how to pronounce it, and give me a few tries, or listen to my pronunciation. I know, voice actors, a billion hours in studio to record all the more likely names, inflection would be different each situation,etc. I'm saying it could be attempted, but nobody wants to try. I'm saying we've had bad voice recognition software since the early 90s, and it hasn't gotten appreciably better. I'm saying eventually games will do this stuff, probably in our lifetime, but right now we're not even poking around at the basics of how we'll begin to do it.

Or, how about an old Zork style adventure game that I give commands, and if it doesn't recognize my voice command, it says so? Kinect has no fail state indicator of any kind, not even a light blink. I want Kinect 2, or more likely, some other, better effort, to attempt to hold its own on the level of an IRC chat bot at least. Developers need to try harder for us to get beyond this current generation's limits.

I don't know why it has to be a "Kinect" thing when anything with access to a microphone could have it. Probably backroom political bullshit involving Microsoft and a lot of money were both involved. And I'm still kind of ticked off that they're now going, "Hurr durr DLC!" while they still have a game on one of the platforms that still has some pretty major problems. I don't know. Bethesda can act like the righteous ones they want to be, but they clearly are not.

Anyway it's already been done on PC. Thu'um Mic does it, and probably does it better.

@AiurFlux: Because Kinect has a lot of voice recognition software that simplifies the process. Otherwise, Bethesda would have to develop a recognition module to work in Skyrim, which seems like too much work for a novelty.

The same reason why voice commands in Mass Effect 3 are only available with Kinect.

This will be a massively awesome update if I can say "Quick Save" and it will quick save since navigating those menus and saving was a ton of time (since I'm a saving fiend).
